The Society of Automotive Engineers uses six different levels to describe the extent to which a car is "self-driving" - but what's the point of this system, and what are the differences between the levels?

That was a great video!
I would like to watch a future Techquickie video on how this AI works...
Me too
Yup definitely do this video!

Hells yes!
I'd love to see how the AI inside of a self driving car works. That sounds like a lot of fun.
Here ya go: czcams.com/video/tiwVMrTLUWg/video.htmlm45s
Great point of reference and a great explanation about the AI. I hope to one day own a self-driving car (though it may not come for many years) but that mainly comes from the interest in how they work and do their thing to keep the roads safer.
Yes
ThowanPlays
You won't even have to own a car since it will be much cheaper to subscribe to a self driving cars network and just order a ride from your phone.
Gabriel Gingras that wouldn’t be for a long time. We just got Uber last year where I live.
My car doesn't even have cruise control or sensors, level -1 :(
mine doesn't have wheels

That thing on Linus' shirt... It bothered me this entire video.
Looks like a hole in his shirt, it bothered me too.
The shirt looks dirty too. Looks like he just ate lunch and did the video!

i bet that within 50 years manual driving will be totally illegal because we all know that humans on the weel are the single point of failure in a totally autonomous and interconnected driving situation

A video on self driving AI, as well as neural networks would be cool
And suddenly the trolley problem becomes real: shoud a level 5 car kill it's "driver" to save (more) other people when an accident can't be avoided?
And who would by a car that would kill him in a bad situation?
I remember a quote from someone at Mercedes saying that there's too many variables on those situations, so probably they'll go with saving the driver and the people in the car because those they have more control over.
If you have a problem with what the AI would do then you have to ask what would you do in the same instance. We all experience situations like these all the time, and there are hundreds of thousands of people dead a year to show for it. Lots of these accidents happen because of HUMAN error. Now I am not stating that self driving cars are going to make all of the death go away, but they may help reduce the number of fatalities every year. We have to at least give these vehicles a chance.
that choice should be the driver/owner to make not a car company or idiots on some comity.... anytime you buy a new car with lvl5 it should ask you the question and whatever you choose then the car will follow... (we know 100% of ppl is going to choose themselves, myself included)
@dunhillsupramk3
Wait doesn't that make your point mute? Why give the choice to the consumer of the vehicle, then if any deaths occur they can and will be placed on the head of the owner of said vehicle. Even if they are not the ones currently in the vehicle. If the car is programmed to avoid an accident at all costs then the but there is a crash. All evidence will be viewed to make a decision afterwords. Also if both or one of the vehicles in a crash or viewing a crash can be used in a court of law to find the one at fault even if its a hit and run.
Yes for AI video !!
I don't need a self driving car, I just need to be able to drive my car with a PS4 controller. That would without a doubt increase my reaction times and overall comfort while driving.
everyone will drive like theyʻd drive in a gta. :v iʻll be a chaos
Wanna go autonomous driving?
Go by train.. xD
Best advice here XD
of course xD
Except trains aren't autonomous, they still have drivers.
I would say between lvl 3 and 4.
or take a bus or ask your mom, you would also come to your spot wihout having to do anything :)
This is the best detailed video Self Driving Car video I've ever seen from you Linus! Awesome informative video!
6:15 Linus realizes he has something on his shirt 😂😂😂
Its a pre-recorded clip I think. He uses it for every video.
Hey Linus! I would definitely like to see a video explaining the workings of this type of AI.
Thanks for all your hard work,
Richard
I would love to have a self driving car that does everything on its own, but I would NEVER buy a car that doesn't have a steering wheel or allow intervention.
Nope. It's not because you can handle a situation better than a computer. It's because the humans won't purchase a car to never be able to drive it. Driving might always be assisted or completely autonomous depending on the user choice, but it's the computer that will still save lifes in both cases.
Tesla is for you
The perfect self-driving car for me is the one that lets you take off manually the AI very easily (like taking off the battery from a phone) and let you drive the car to prevent anything crazy can happen in case of AI error or being hacked ...
Because, how do you tell your self driving car "park in the grass over there next to Will's car?" I'm gonna have to have a steering wheel, if for no other reason than that.
You won't have a choice, when level 5 cars become safer than human drivers, then what makes you think manufacturers will waste money on steering wheels?
Dropping a quick tip here. Go to your CZcams settings > general > select double tap to peek and set it to 5 seconds. Now whenever you come across a Techquickie video, you can save yourself 5 seconds :) And in any situation 5 seconds is better.
I think the biggest problem with level 5 autonomy is moral situations, for an example, the car has two options, run over a deer or run over a baby. From a human perspective it seems obvious, you run over the deer. But from the cars perspective it's different, the car puts itself and you over anything else which means the car will evaluate which will do the most harm to the car and you, and in that situation the car will drive over the baby for minimum damage. To overcome this issue you have to program every single scenario and outcome, which is almost impossible with modern technology. Of course someday we will see the level 5 autonomous self driving vehicles but I think it will take a couple decades.
Bosses lambo 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Wait, did they show their license plates?
Oh they did...
inb4 video gets deleted
They showed it multiple times in their other fun channel they also showed their address on their convention thing
why not?
what can you possibly do with that information? Its public to everyone in your area as you drive. there is no risk in showing it lol we all already know the address of their work site.
That's a nice video. Too bad for me that it's a year after I finished my thesis work for school about "transportation with alternative (renewable) energies". It the content of this video probably would have been a great addition to my sections about electronic cars and Tesla. But at least I was able to use your videos about batteries and such.
Keep on making great content like that!
(the video about the AI in a self-driving car would be cool!)
Definitely want to see a video about hiw various self driving features work!
So a level 5 car has no steering wheel and no way for human to control it.
But what if the car has an accident and kills say people on the road then who is responsive the driver the car company or the pedestrian.
🤔
That is the million dollar question.
Shubham Pawar The car company definitely but it should’ve been stated in the paper agreement when you purchased the car.
They said the same thing about elevators when there was no longer a need for a manual operator....
I would assume the car company would take the place of driver blame. If it was the pedestrian's fault it would be the same as it currently is with the pedestrian taking the blame. This doesn't really change much.
That’s one of the things to figure out. Just because they’re obstacles doesn’t mean they shouldn’t do it though. We wouldn’t have any of the stuff we have if that were true.
Level 5 is the fastest way to die while having sex :D
laugh while you can, your grandkids origins will be on a highway(not to hell)
Stijn De Bruyn getting drunk and increase your and another death rate. Humans probably have one errors than most computers. 😁
How would a level five car choose the parking say a disabled person would prefer over what's easiest to find? How would a level five car deal with a street suddenly blocked by protesters? How would it deal with an armed robbery attempt with passengers inside? So many questions to which I want there to be an override for driving but then if we don't have people skilled at driving anymore then how would they do any better.
yes more videos on this topic loved the vid linus !!!
I'd really like level 5 vehicles without user controls available to be banned before we even get to that point because if the vehicle gets hacked which, if they're as useless as current cars with internet access, they will be, then you're outta luck.
We already have a large dependency on systems which are theoretically able to be hacked by remote users. This doesn't mean we should stop using all such technologies. Obviously care should be taken, but outright banishment is far too extreme.
The bigger issue is the very real possibility that a foolish populous will vote to make anything under level 5 illegal. If driving your own car is eventually banned, I can assure you that many people who love to drive, myself included, will become criminals.
that would be an easy fix. I would just program the car to only download updates for its software or GPS maps while at the house connected to wifi (like how you can set your phone to update its apps while only hooked up to wifi to save data) or have the car only hook up to the internet when it requests for an update to its maping system (lets say you drove to a new state and the car didn't have the maping info for that state) but down right banishing it so it doesn't get hacked is not the answer!
hmm, would you need a drivers license for a level 5 car if there is no steering wheel?
jp dawson I don't think so, you don't need a drivers license to take a taxi or uber.
Obviously not. Why would you need a drivers license for not driving anything.
Good question. Would 10 year old Timmy take the level 5 car to his friends house to play, 12 miles away (19km) from 1600h - 2130h and would this be legal & fine? Think it's a great interesting question!
does remind me of a scene in an anime where this was how the world was, a kid didn't have his license but was allowed to take the car anyways since it operated all on it's own. basically, since you're a passenger, no license needed for a full autonomous car with no controls
Aepek I can see your point of 'giving the freedom for the under age to do things they shouldn't' . But should that be a parenting thing?
Great info!!!
TechQuickie is a really great idea. Keep up the good work Linus.

Well, that's If you added voice assintant capabilities (I.E. the car should talk a la Cortana or Alexa style)
I wanna see on how AI inside a car actually works.
Michael G it is based on convultional networks , networks of matrixes that are multiplied an input, to obtain an output

Self driving level 3-5 affordability by years
Level 3: Early 2020s
Level 4: Mid 2020s
Level 5: Late 2020s
Level 3 is out now for the rich, while middle/low class own a level 1 or 2.
My first thought when I hear "Self Driving Car" is a picture in a book that was written in the late 50's of a family in a glass domed car playing a game of checkers.
I attempted to read that book in '72 when I was five years old.
Level 9000!
What if it does the Kaio-Ken?
But can it run crysis?

"Do you want to see how the A.I. inside of a self-driving car works?" Well, what else would I watch Techquickie for?
Interesting. Thanks for uploading!
Nvidia are working on level 5 cars? Wut.
No, voltswagen are working with nvidia. Nvidia are creating hardware and AI technology
Nvidia's experience with high performance, low power hardware is where their part is. Tesla runs Nvidia hardware for it's autopilot system.
Really nothing about Tesla?
SofaWolf the tesla system is not a self driving system. It’s only a level 2, so it still requires the driver to be in control.
I’m not familiar with the Mercedes system, so I can’t comment on how they compare.
Tesla... czcams.com/video/C3DbrYx-SN4/video.html
Oh but Tesla called it "Autopilot" for a reason: they will update and improve the software, it's an AI and it will evolve to level 5 some day, (of course I hope they never take the steering wheel and pedals out)
i think tesla should rename "autopilot" to "copilot"
Tesla will update all their cars to allow full autonomous driving capability when the US government allows it. This is to the best of my knowledge.
I think the main problem why we don't see more Level 5 cars on the road today is that the power required to make those kinds of decisions is just too great for it to handle. I think the best was to go about it will have to be that cars can Level 5 equipped but will have the it dumbed-down either by the government or by manufacturers and still maintain human control input. Only when there are enough self-driving cars where a lot of possibilities for accidents can be reduced to almost zero will we see cars that are Level 5 with no human input.
Yes please, do a future tech-longie on automated cars.

Is that a cigarette burn hole on your chest? Must have nodded off again.
I'm surprise he never mention Tesla in this video at all
Hawichii They're at level 2.
so?
very interesting
as someone who drives on a lot of rural roads that a person isn't quite sure are roads, i would never want a car without the ability to take manual control, however for the daily commute or store trips on normal roads a level 5 would be nice.
Hi my name is Edna I hope you don't mind me sharing a bit about myself and why these cars are going to take a very important roll in my life in the coming future.
I was died nosed with cancer in the eyes at 18 months old and thats how I lost my sight.
While I grew up during my ten-aged and early 20's I always wished that there were such cars that could drive on their own.
When I got to my late 20's I heard about the self driving cars and self gurgle driving cars so I truely got interested in learning more about these cars then I started doing some research on CZcams and gurgle, the more information I found out the more interesting it became and the more determine I feel about guying one of these cars to get me around independently and then I'll be forever happy and free.
Now that I'm in my early 30's I'll bee looking forward to year 20,20 when these cars are out on the markent.
IMO:
At least 20 years until commercial (but not necessarily affordable) versions of Level 5 vehicles pop up in the marketplace.
10 years until all Tesla vehicles are Level 4, and a lot of other manufacturers have Level 4 versions of their vehicles available.
Also, 10 years until most of the new cars you can buy, have Level 3 options available (for those vehicles that are priced _accordingly_ even if it's their base (non-autonomous) version).
Just an opinion. Don't attack me people.
That is not really a level 4 car though, it is not capable of driving in different areas, the data is being used to make it safe as possible in that area, and mapping every nook and cranny so it would be like driving on a nascar circuit, e.,g a ring, and then taking it to another race track such as Silverstone where the roads bend, it could not learn fast enough. Google are basically cheating at one area.
I hope we just get away from this bullshit lol.
Don't think so. The Singularity would be around the late 20s or early 30s.
We definitely should spend next 7 to 10 years in adjusting ourselves and our laws.
I can't believe he didn't even mention tesla
My Tesla does great on the 101. Here a pro tip use some self aggressive Velcro and Velcro a bobblehead to the 10 o'clock position on the steering wheel and it won't bother you about touching the wheel at all, it really works. And when you want to drive you can just take it off. I can do my makeup on the way to work and even nap on the way home.
"cough", safety...
Yes please make a video explaining self-driving cars! :D
My car is Level -1, it doesn't start
that'd be -infinite
Wouldn't that be a car that doesn't exist?
Rush380 nah, -infinite driverless capability cause it can't even drive with a driver
Same. Mine has no transmission
What about taking a taxi? The taxi would be self-driving from my perspective, right?
Yes. Where is the problem? Even tho, Taxi would become pretty niche. Since a level 5 car doesnt need a human, you could always just tell your car via an app to pick you up and drive you home. Taxis would exclusively be for people who dont own a car themselves. But jeah, they would be self driving. Because why wouldnt they.. it's a lot safer.
Taxis would be more dangerous, more expensive and have longer wait times. So, no.
As long as you think a taxi driver is part of the car, and not a real human being, then taxis are self-driving. Otherwise no, taxis have drivers, namely taxi drivers.
But still with a fallible human driver. So no.
Level 5 may never be a full reality, since not even the best human drivers can continue to drive in "any conceivable scenario" in "an conceivable driving conditions" - however, level 4 on 99.9% of roads in 99.9% of conditions (including snow blizzards etc) will be enough to completely revolutionise road transport almost everywhere.
One of the hurdles with self driving cars that concerns me is identifying autonomous operation vs manual operation. I can see Officers wasting a lot of time and possibly incorrectly persecuting someone for having their phone up, doing crap on their laptop or having a beer in their hands and some people may try to excuse their irresponsible behavior(who is actually driving) by saying their car is self driving.
Not buying any car with more than level 1.
Why?
I base my self-worth on if I'm the first to make a comment or not.
how the fuck did 25 other people comment before me
Very informative.. Thanx..
one debate is the Trolley Conundrum. If two fully autonomous cars are to collide, but only one can make a maneuver to save the lives in one of the cars, which one will be sacrificed? A car full of seniors, or a car with one budding and prospecting scientist making advances in improving human life.
Although I don't find this argument fully convincing as both cars should be able to prevent the crash completely, it is a moral debate that does still need an answer.
Waymos are great way better than the Ubers. Waymos move much more naturally than the Ubers. Waymos are very cautious though, haven't mastered navigating around impatient, aggressive, inconsiderate drivers - sometimes you have to be aggressive yourself sometimes to make that exit, get on the highway, or get into that left turn lane.
One word iRobot
Your videos are always fantastic 😁😁
Level 5 is the definition of general artificial intelligence. It would have to cope with verbal and nonverbal commands from police officers and construction workers, make ethical judgements about fairness and risk, and be ready for situations no one has ever anticipated for it, or have even occurred before.
autonomous cars have been invented years ago, they're called TAXIS
Youcef Mekircha
Autonomous implies that a human isn’t controlling it.
A joke implies that you don't take it seriously

Unsurprisingly I went to sleep right after my comment. lol
In Norway we have level 4 proto busses that work quite good
Great video! I would like to know more!
If you buy a model 3, mod it and then break it, are you gonna ask Tesla to fix it?
Why not? After all, if I'm paying for repairs, what's the difference how it got broken?
Tesla has their repair info locked down to their own network of repair centers (literally, even an independent shop can't get so much as what PSI the tires should be inflated to) so it kinda does matter, as they can refuse to fix it if you broke it cause of the mod
jur4x an issue of accountability. If you take apart your car and put it back together with stuff missing and stuff added unprofessionally, Tesla service providers could break the vehicle even more while fixing it because not everything is where it should be. Then Tesla would have to compensate in some way. On top of that it's a risk to the servicers. As someone who is tranied to fix a Tesla, I know how it behaves. Even when something breaks, as a professional I would know that it should behave in a certain set of parameters. If you suddenly change how the car operates then as a repair person I am now at risk of the car doing things it shouldn't and potentially harming me. I hope that answers your question.
Justin Noker. Well there are no official Tesla service centres anywhere in Russia, Ukraine and other ex-USSR countries, and yet people do get their grey imports repaired. And not just tyre replacements. Though, I've heard that some garages in those countries had find a solution for replacement that battery relay that was problematic on early Model S cars.
You should check out car guru channel this guy gets salvaged teslas and rebuilds them.
Yeah no... I'll stick with my lvl 0. It's only a matter of time till there's a news story of a hack that killed hundreds on a free way
Still better than human error killing hundreds of thousands of people every single year. A hack would be fixed after the first time. Human error cannot be fixed.
It's not like cars nowadays already have over 100 microcontrollers that could be hacked - even tho, sure it's not as interresting.
trumpeter811 it's called alcohol not hack
Who cares we humans are fragile we will die if rather die driving a stick and have a loud as fuck truck then be bored as fuck getting driven around.
they could implement an emergency stop button (as well as other safety features encase of an emergency)
jdr ok driven around is great. You can play with your phone during trip.
The problem is that with self driving and regular cars on the road you’re still gona have accidents (the randomness of human driving can’t be calculated indefinitely by a car) but with only lvl 5 cars on the road you might see a large decrease in accidents each year. Obviously were years from that but it’s cool to think about
So, this is my opinion about this self-driving car thing, I think some level 5 cars should have optional steering wheels so you can override whenever you want to in case if you're not comfortable with the self-driving car driving in some areas, you can go ahead and take over, that's what I want the level 5 self-driving cars to have is an optional steering wheel and a optional override function in case if you want to take over
the only answer to the problem is making sensors that can tell within a 100m radius and calculate the best choice moving forward. that also means creating sensors that can also detect at least 50m while an object is in the pathway of the sensor and potential danger (like a dog turning the corner last second on the road before the wall ends, had the car known of a moving entities behind the wall it would get ready for potential change of paths)
Too lazy to read articles so I've been curious for so long until my fav channel explains about it.
All we need to do really would be to put the cell phone for map viewing and it will capture images with camera and give feed back to the engine control unit by the cigarette lighter charging cable. Every car can have an auto pilot
Yes,do the follow up video
okay this was actually a helpful video! given the future, this is knowledge a lot of people should start gaining.
thanks Linus, this video helped me in my ITS course
great info, great vid
Linus great videos... But can you please add more pleasant background rather than this solid/gradient one?
I figure it's probably in your video idea list, but a follow up to "gaming on Linux" about things like Proton and Vulkan would be cool (though maybe not until they're a little more far along since a lot of Vulkan is still getting hammered together if I remember right.)
Convince the public that something is true? Impossible. Convince the public that the opposite is false, and is a cover up conspiracy...ok, you've got something going for you.
It's all about where the responsibility lies in case of injury or damage. It's a very difficult problem to solve. I'm quite curious to see how it turns out over the next couple of decades or so.
That would be an amazing video :D This was awesome
A video on how the A.I in self driving cars work would be dope! But I think it would be better suited for LTT. Like, maybe you could tour a Tesla factory or something!
