    The best way to answer the last question as a petrol head I would normally want the car to sound really good stock vs aftermarket exhaust. So basically it's the specific characteristics of the engine whereas it becomes an iconic engine to give you an example RB26, 2jz, LFA engine 458 speciale, 599 gto, Zonda 7.3l V12 and the list goes on... After that you look into the other aspect of the cars..

    Engines that I recall people having fond reminiscences about that were specific to their makes and eras include Ferrari’s Colombo V12, Porsche’s Metzger flat six, and Lamborghini’s Bizzarrini V12. Car magazines tended to wax on about them, but I’m not sure if much matters other than the configuration, like Sam is saying.

    I'm one of the few who swap over onto a set of winter tires, have done since I purchased my E91 330D, live in the east midlands at the top of a hill, I know whatever the weather from November to March\April I will be able to get about, may go to All Seasons in the future and just run them all year round.

    • @thepisteoffice331
      @thepisteoffice331 Před 5 měsíci

      Me too. Sam & Tony are still clueless as to the benefits of winter tyres. I'm on the east side of Nottingham and the local roads are as greasy as hell in the winter. I run winters on a second set of rims from the start of Nov to the end of April. The summers then last twice as long and used rims hold their value so the long term cost is minimal.

  • @andrewhurstcars
    @andrewhurstcars Před 5 měsíci +3

    If you’ve got any value of car on summer tyres then it makes sense to change to winter tyres or winter rated Michelin cross climates. The only extra cost is switching over. When you’re using the winters you’re not using the summers. I switch over to winters from December to March. Tony here thinks winter tyres ‘wouldn’t have made a difference’ - that’s simply not true, they make a huge difference.

    A BMW AUC Warranty is by far better than any 3rd party one. I admit I work in a dealership but I’ve seen those 3rd parties warranties try to wriggle out of everything and many have a limit on the repair costs which is far too low to cover any major job. The insured warranty is also pretty good with paying out on qualifying repairs.

    • @colnagog6026

      Michelin has warning for using "summer tires" below certain temps...hence the "summer tire" naming convention. Its typically mid-40F'ish. Concerns are lack of grip and compound becoming brittle, and tire...sorry "tyre" failing, if exposed to said temps for extended period of time. Sidewalls failed on the PS2s that came with my 20thAE GTI one "winter", after very short trip from home to local eatery. Good luck driving on summers all year in cold climates.

    • @Nord_Mann
      @Nord_Mann Před 5 měsíci

      Saying PS4S, which is quite a good tyre on track, maybe the best non-R compound tyre for track use, is great in the cold and can double as a year round tyre like Tony basically said in the video, is just bull shit. And saying it’s the best summer tyre when it gets cold, where do you even dig up that nonsense from? There are plenty summer tires better suited for colder weather use. Michelin has even got a tyre they’ve named Cross
      Climate. I’ve never driven it, but it’s bet it’s far better than the PS4S in the cold and wet. I also bet it too is crap on snow, like any other summer tyre. There are winter tyres for a reason and like Sam stated, below 7 degrees Celsius one should use designated winter tyres as the grip of summer tyres just diminishes. Take it from a guy that drives around on snow from October through April, on winter tyres.

    46:31 I am very aware of the engine when shopping for a car. You have to be these days. I seek out new cars with old engines to avoid the newer engines that have more issues due to small displacement being forced to push out so much power while emitting less. I prefer reliability, so engine and transmissions that are proven are paramount to me.
    (and by this I mean selecting a Mazda CX-5 for its older 2.5 NA engine over a Chevy Equinox 1.5 turbo. Or a Ram 3.6 pentastar over the Chevy Silverado turbo 4, which has a 4% failure rate last time I checked.)

      Hakkapeliitta, would be pointless as they are designed for Arctic Circle, but tyres designed for -15 to +15 Celsius work well. As the temperature drops normal tyres become less pliant, stopping distances increase, the ride become harsher, grip deteriorates and potholes are more likely to cause damage.
      I'm guessing you are British.

    Porsche are somewhere in between mass produced and smaller production runs. They do mass produce but only built to order. BMW, Mercedes, etc, all just build. There is still a niceness to speccing your Porsche, even the SUVs.

    Late 90's and early 2000's engines from BMW are more simple to work on than the modern stuff, but when I'm not working on it, I prefer more modern engines. But it's like what Tony has said in the past - I wouldn't want an old car with modern tech. It takes away the character.

    Hi i Iove your podcasts and your car chanel I was wondering if you have ever thought about doing a video on the porsche 911 base model compared to all the other 911 models is there much of a difference in driveability and performance to justify the extra cost I am guessing 70 percent of people how buy porsches 911 models are base models either second hand or new what I your thoughts on this I own a highly specked base 911 and I realy carnt see how it can get better for the money you have to spend
    The money I saved on not getting a gt or touring I built a super car garage to keep the cars I got in I wish I could send you pictures of it I would love yo to see my set up here

    Sam, I cant believe that you are making such a big deal over the outlay of £1k on a set of tyres for the GT3 for winter, after paying £150k+ for the purchase of the car! Its just too ridiculous.
    Snow tyres...I agree, overkill for the UK unless you intend taking the car to ski resorts 3-4 times a year, but all-season tyres make perfect sense as they are great if it does snow, but mostly because they are far better in under 10 degrees weather (well that's half the year in this country then!), far better in cold weather with mushy leaves/salt/greasy roads.
    My wife has all seasons on her 4x4...they didn't even deteriorate badly during our super hot 2022.
    Not suggesting that you would use them all year round in a GT3....you would destroy them in a hot lap on a circuit. But you will be surprised how good they are from October until March.
    This is my opinion only.
