Jimmy Stewart was a favorite actor of mine -- I always loved his movies! I heard him recite a poem about his dog, "Beau" once, on the Johnny Carson show that brought us all to tears, including him! I have that poem now, and read it in honor of my precious dog that I recently had to have put down, after her companionship of over a decade -- very, very difficult. Jimmy understood that, as was obvious in his poem.

He is at rest now this accordion player, this former hunter who became a conservationist, this pilot, this man so desperately in love with his wife, and his twin girls. He is gone now this tall, lanky, stammering small town Pennsylvania boy. Just a average guy , not perfect known off screen to have a violent temper at times just an average joe. Just an average Joe who was the first actor to enlist a year before Pearl Harbor who rose to the rank of brigadier general, and earned many medals as a hero, just an average joe who won an Oscars and Hollywood"s highest honors and respect as well. Just an average joe that everybody liked and admired, who was the best friend a world can have. He cheers us when we are sad, gives us wisdom when are lost, gives us excitement to rescue us from boredom, and boy was he brave and funny. He helped defeat the most evil mad man the world ever knew. He is gone now and is in the arms of his beloved wife, but he has left us hundreds of hours of entertainment, all and all he didn't do bad for an average Joe.

A great actor in drama, comedy and action movies - In 'Destry Rides Again' was the perfect partner for Marlene Dietrich - He was the star of masterpieces like 'Vertigo' with Alfred Hitchcock - But also the man who after winning an Oscar left the Hollywood studios to join the Allies' Air Force in World War II, flew more that 20 combat missions and got plenty of honors and medals. Mr Stewart deserves entirely what the military use to say about a fallen comrade: 'Lest we forget'

As long as there are feelings of appreciation for the goodness of the human heart and of truth and decency as portrayed by James Stewart I will not loose hope that this hard days will pass and people will once again be decent once again.

Think of that for a moment. After winning an Oscar he left Hollywood to join the Air Force after WWII started and a year before the US involvement. He flew 25 combat missions. Imagine George Clooney or Brad Pitt doing that today.

Stewart could not only "play" a hero, he could actually be one. Retired a Major General (2 star). Those 1/2 men you mentioned shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence

      Brigadier General.
I also don’t blame any actors for not risking their health or lives just to make money for the military industry.

Watching this and others Kennedy awards in their early days on July 4th 2018. I got tears in my eyes cause we are living in a much harder world then back then. I thank you for posting this cause it bring back memories of a time where we accept each other the way they was, entertainer knew how to make life enjoyable even when time was rough.

      Ha,ha!
You accepted people for who they were?
      Hardly!
Jimmy was known to dislike anyone not white.
I would say that’s the opposite of accepting people for who they were!
