  • All ABOARD the historic 1880 train running ten miles between Hill City and Keystone, South Dakota. This railroad line was originally built as a mining railroad for gold in the Black Hills. It reached Keystone on January 20, 1900 and was later used to haul equipment for carving nearby Mount Rushmore. The Baldwin 2-6-2T #104 locomotive and train cars and have been featured on television shows, such as the Gunsmoke episode "Snow Train", General Hospital, and the TNT mini-series, Into the West. It also appeared in the movie, Orphan Train. Keep your head and arms in the train at all times since hot embers shower those who don't!

    Thank you, I lived in Oblivion in 2002 and was trying to show our friends the place. We were just west of the Oblivion station house, and this seems to be the best shot of the set, yet! It seems a little time past before Oblivion was just that! We used to wave at the travelers as the train went by.

      John, thank you for your comments! I am pleased that this video helped you document where you lived. In a few weeks I will review the unedited footage to see if I happened to capture your home. If so, I will post an unlisted CZcams video for you. This was a great way to spend a lovely afternoon. I sat with my arm out the open window and hot embers kept falling on me, especially during the slight inclines when the little engine struggled. Thanks again for taking the time to comment and sharing your experiences. Dave in Montana.

    There is only one incline between the two towns on this line. I would guess we climbed a couple of hundred feet in a few miles. I thought I heard the old engine puff “I think I can, I think I can” while we were climbing. If you were not paying attention you would say the route is flat. A very enjoyable experience; a must do in my book! Thanks for watching my video. Dave.

      ***** Thank you for watching and commenting. It is always fun to ride the rails in style! We need to preserve and utilize more of these workhorses of the past, even if to transport us tourists! It does give a new appreciation to those who maintain and operate these fantastic machines. Thanks again! Dave in Montana.

    Does the train rin in the area of Homestake mining company?

    • @davidegg22
      @davidegg22  Před 3 lety

      No it does not. Homestake mine is up by Sturgis, probably 100 miles or so north of these tracks.
