    A Floating bench seat in a shower is visually pleasing and can give more shower floor space in a small shower. A solid piece of stone is usually used to build the seat and is inserted into the tile for support while building the shower. Relying on just the tile to support the bench seat is probably not a good idea. In this video I show a simple method to build a floating bench seat support out of the same foam backer board to build the shower,you will need to use 2" foam board and a Stainless steel u-channel The installation of the support is quick and easy and very strong. Adhesive Kerdi-Fix sealant appropriate to adhere and bond the foam support seat in place.

    Just had this type of floating Schluter shower bench installed in my shower, but the tiling guys didn't clean up the squeeze-through on the bottom. Had to use a scraper and hammer to break it off myself. They also didn't tile beneath. Then the same crew tiled my whirlpool box in and got a bull-nose at each outside corner out of square pretty noticeable. I'm not happy with the job and am fixing to tell my contractor to either have these guys fix both issues or expect to not get paid what they're asking. As for the strength of the Schluter bench, I weigh about 215 and it holds my full weight just fine. Good video. Wish I'd had you do my jobs.

I want to fire him, and our "contract" is a joke (just basically that I agree to let them renovate my house), so I may wind up telling him "OK, I'm satisfied that the renovation is complete so let's settle up now and goodbye". Hey Sal, Daniel here in the Midwest. I have a 3 foot bench seat coming up. I use go board for my walls, Iwish to use the same exact process you did here to install the floating bench,
    just swap products, go board instead of kerdi, goboard prosealant vs kerdifix, etc. i have 2 questions:
    One: the uchannel do you have a bench length where this becomes required for this foam board installation method or do you always use uchannel to stiffen up 2" board regardless if the bench is 1 foot long or 6 feet long.
    Two: I was hoping to see how you tiled the underside of the bench seat. i couldn't find it in the video. my fault for skipping around or do you have video of it that didn't get uploaded?

    You say the screws do nothing, which is clear. I don't understand how KerdiFix can be strong enough to support a 300 lb (say) person sitting on the bench. I also don't see how the 2" thick Styrofoam seat can span 3' with that 300 lb person on it. I know that you know what you're doing and have done the same many times, I just don't understand the engineering that makes it possible.

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  Před 4 lety +3

      Well the 2" board is very stiff, the adhesive on three sides is very strong, the U channel stiffens the front edge, so alone the support is very strong, when you sit or stand on it you are applying a downward sheer force to the adhesive, which has a very large area of resistance when you add up all the surface in contact with the walls. Now add to that the stone, which is 1 1/4 thick which has it's own strength, additionally lock that in with the tile all around the stone, this results in a very strong system.

    • @GarwoodNick
      @GarwoodNick Před 4 lety +1

      Also, the foam doesn't contribute significantly to the strength of the seat. It is like the web of an I-beam. The strength comes from the polyethylene membrane on the face of the Kerdi, like the flange of an I-beam.
