It’s crazy how he gave 17 reasons he could have died at 17. Dude is a genius
Every time I hear the first verse I cry bc I feel like Kendrick perfectly explains how the fear your parent give you changes you forever. I thank Kendrick for this verse bc the emotional abuse is something I’ve felt.
In the context of this song the reason the lyrics are reversed early on is to symbolize him going back in time. When the reversed section is over he's back in his childhood.
And also to add some cleverness. “Ill beat ya ass keep talking back”
The first line is also “I’ll beat your ass keep talking back” referring to kendrick talking back to his mom but also talking backwards , in reverse…..
it's such an amazing little detail that many people don't catch, one of the reasons why I love KDot
the song is about all of the fear he has encountered in his life. first section is about his childhood, second is about teenage years, and third is about the fear he’s encountered as an adult. the childhood fears of his mother, the teenage fears of death, and the adult fears as everything he has crashing

PLEASE do “how much a dollar cost” by Kendrick it’s a fantastic song that goes through so many depths of different emotions while telling a true story. It’s another masterpiece from Kendrick
The whole album has two different means/paths if played on the original order of the songs or if played in "reverse", so there are many songs wich reflect the possible paths going forwards or backwards, thats why there's a part where he sings the same lyrics but in reverse

the reverse sounds are throughout the album hinting to play the album backwards. they tell different stories- forward kendrick lives his life through weakness or fear but backwards he lives his life through wickedness because it starts with duckworth in a world where his father dies and isn’t there to guide him

@@caboose22320 well, the album does tell 2 stories and it does have to be reversed, it's just not this song that hints at that. duckworth, the final song of the album, does.
forwards it's a story of wickedness to weakness, while backwards it's a story of weakness to wickedness.

kendrick literally told us from the very first track, lol
Physical violence, the threat of violence, constant belittling, disrespect, insults and bullying - that's what I got at home from my dad from as far back as I can recall. All this dumb abuse made me resort to stealing, lying and running away from my problems for years.
The three things that I believe saved my life and turned things around are:
- an amazing MDMA trip I had with one of my best friends
- therapy
- meditation
Kendrick really is a real therapist, I truly love this man
He isn’t a therapist he is just man who has been through too much trauma and is able to express it. He is not you saviour.
He’s honestly just the realest nigga to live
He is a living legend
Ive said this from when i first hears the song. You are raised from a young age to have these fears . To the point were your not comfortable living without the fear and you start installing your own fears as an adult.
The song is about fear, kendrick feared his mom when he was 7 years cause she beat him from almost everything, 2nd verse kendrick is 17 and he fears the hood cause he could die from anything, at 27 he feared losing all the money he made out of fam
I love this song. Because I truly fear life. Life sucks and listening to this song makes me feel better. Idk. It’s just like I’m talking to myself.

This song is so impactful and it is easily my favorite Kendrick song not because it sounds good but because it is just so impactful and meaningful it shows how he evolved and how hurt he was and it’s a relatable song to a lot of people and a song to turn to for others.
The first verse was actually from kendrick’s parents point of view i believe. The song follows kendrick from 7, to 17, to 27

I’ve been waiting for this song on the channel, I knew you would have a good amount to say on this, this song is beautiful in a retrospective type of way !

Reversal and going backwards are themes of this album (hence its title, and even its pop sensibilities), to the extent that the entire _tracklist_ is designed to be played backwards as well... and tells a somewhat different story too.

The first thing Kendrick raps in the song is from the perspective of his momma, she says “I beat yo ass, keep talking back”. That comes directly after Kendrick intentionally reversed his vocals. He was talking back to his momma and she wasn’t having it
