Kendrick Lamar: A Child of Prince & 2Pac

- Kendrick Lamar is one of those artists that represents the fears, struggles and wins of an entire generation. His art is thoughtful, patient and perfected over the course of years. He speaks truth in his music and interviews. He layers meanings, messages and theories within his rhymes and even the most careful listeners may miss upon first spin. But Kendrick is by no means the first artist in history to do this. One artist in particular, who at one point went by nothing more than that word, is actually a big inspiration to K. Dot.
What many people don’t know is that Prince was supposed to be a featured artist on To Pimp A Butterfly. But in order to fully understand what Prince meant to Kendrick Lamar, we need to take a look at what Prince meant to Tupac Shakur.
In this video we look at what Prince meant to Tupac and in turn what 2pac meant to Kendrick

What do you think is the most important message to come from Kendrick's music? And what song of his would you have loved to see Prince on?

Introspection is my take away from Kendrick’s music 🎶

L.U.S.T
That song songs like it’s Prince infused with Curtis Mayfield..

Nothing, honestly....
How much a dollar costs
Drake used ai 2pac to "diss" Kendrick and he compares his reach to MJ. Kendrick met and performed with Prince, had his respect and got unreleased Pac vocals and Pac's mother give permission to use them on 2 pimp a butterfly. Drake and Kendrick are not the same.
I think that show the world how much of rat drake is
Does he really think he has MJ reach? Wtf
👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽
@@carlyhyer8475 yep, said it several times. He wore the MJ glove several times as well.
2pacs family/estate considers Kendrick family. He's one of the very few who has any relationship/access to 2pac and his fam on a personal level these days.
Talk about solidified in hip-hop and culture.
Drake wishes.
And people try to act like Kendrick was a nobody before “Like That” 😂😂
nobody acts like that u have to be 5 years old to think that
I please the blood of Jesus on the minds who literally believed that.
@@AllTheArtsy or a OVHO fan
@@AllTheArtsyDrake's fans lol They swear Kendrick wasn't that big brfore beefing with
@@AllTheArtsyor maybe 2 years old 😂😂😂 Kendrick is literally a history maker, first Pulitzer award winner for rap, literacy scholar, mind blower. But most of all, he's consistent
This aged well. K Dot was the wrong man for an artist like Drake to fuck with.
This is what make Kendrick the culture. Aubrey could never. Purpose > Popularity
The more I learn about Kendrick, the more endearing he becomes.
Prince on that pride chorus would crazy
Anybody classy enough to play with Prince don't need to be a no competition with nobody
Prince and Kendrick are two of my favorite artists of all time (actually I discovered Kendrick through the performance they did together; before that I knew nothing about Kendrick), and despite initially having the wrong idea about Pac growing up, I grew to have great respect for him after finding out about his love for Prince.
They f legends
Really dont care what people thing negatively of Kendrick. He is a great artist if our generation. To just learn that he got on stage with Prince is amazing.
To share the stage with an ICON like Prince, had to be mind-blowing for KDot. Salute 🫡
Pac and Prince are something in music that will probably never see again.
Globally and american icons period.
There will never be another pac or prince or kendrick
Kendrick is of the same ilk, come on now, give it up for the guy.
@@jovanreid6782 I expect one more album to be decent.
This was one of the coolest videos to work on because I honestly just wanted to explore the almost prince feature on TPAB but I ended up finding an undeniable connection between these three legends ♊️ Hope you enjoy watching
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video + how you threaded the intersectionality between these artists!
@@coryjackson6944 thank you for this comment! It means a lot
Clicked on this video as soon as I saw Prince, Kendrick Lamar, and Tupac in the same thumbnail. I've been waiting for someone to delve into the Kendrick Lamar and Prince connection, especially. You see: Prince is my all-time favorite artist, musician, entertainer, etc.; I've been his biggest fan since I was 11, I own every album, I know his entire discography from front to back, I know a lot of his unreleased material too. As for Kendrick Lamar, he became my favorite rapper of all time after Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers dropped. Funny enough, I actually discovered K. Dot through Prince, specifically a live performance I happened to come across on CZcams some time in 2015: it was of Prince playing with his all female band, Third Eye Girl, and the song was a lesser known deep cut only diehard Prince fans know about, called "What's My Name", only, it was modified to feature a rapper I'd never before seen or heard of, despite the fact that this same rapper, I'd soon find out, was already a household name, and his name was Kendrick Lamar. (Obviously, I wasn't paying too much attention to rap in the 2010's; I might as well had been living under a rock when it came to the genre). I'd come around soon enough though. It would take some years. I'd initially tried using DAMN. as a point of entry to Kendrick's catalog but I didn't quite take to that album. Fast forward to 2022 tho, and Mr. Morale is all I'm listening to for months on end, then I finally, eventually make my way to Kendrick's back catalog and now he's my favorite rapper of all time. Now, when it comes to Tupac, I grew up with his music, as my father and brother were his biggest fans and would blast his music in the house, but I never actually listened to him on my own and still don't to this day, however, I went to see Tupac: Resurrection when it hit theaters in the early 2000's and learned so much about him that I didn't know, such as his love and respect for Prince, which made me see Tupac in a different light and appreciate and understand him more than I ever did. Anyways, all this is to say, this is a topic I've been low-key waiting on someone to expound upon. How can this not be good? You've got yourself a sub just based on the topic alone. Thank you for this, and I'll probably edit in some afterthoughts on this comment once I'm done watching the video. Props to you. ✊
Kendrick is a Genius just like Prince & Tupac Shakur Kendrick picked up where Tupac left off and for Prince to have Kendrick Lamar on a stage with him Let’s you know the Respect and Commonality that Prince Recognized in Kendrick for Mrs. Afeni to allow Kendrick to use Tupac Vocals on a Song speaks Volumes and she knew Tupac would Approve & Appreciate it. Howard loves to be around Kendrick you could tell he’s a fan and they have mutual respect for each other
Imma pac and kendrick student for life❤❤
All 3 are Geminis (Prince, Tupac, Kendrick) ♊️
Exactly 💯...we can also add Lenny Kravitz...
Biggie, Andre 3000 and jadakiss too
Us Geminis are passionate and creative people!
@@ddhb223sfyn Ice Cube and Kanye too
This comment is the one.
Prince fan, and two of my favorite rappers happen to be also heavily influenced by Prince. This is amazing!
Same here. I actually discovered Kendrick because of Prince's performance with him. And one of my favorite Pac quotes is "Sometimes I be wanting to call up Prince, like, can we hang? Cuz I know he loves women like I love women."
Oh my god! I’ve never seen that live footage of Kendrick freestyling with the band. Just gave me chills! True emcee in the flesh. Rap snobs will never get it, fucc em. Kendrick is a musical legend up there with MJ and Prince, Pac and Big
The Geminis…I love their minds ♊️
Mind Over Matter
Prince was known for putting artists on the spot .
Yeah he was also known for grooming his 14r yo step daughter while having full gaurdianship and marrying her. But Yall don't know nun bout Dah.
This connection makes sense to me. The 3 are similar for sure.
I do believe the interviewer he is talking about, that he met in Germany, is Mats Nilesk'r of the Swedish radio show P3 Soul. He is the one who conducted the 2Pac interview that is sampled in Mortal Man.
Wow this is a great comment thank you - it all worked out perfectly!
TPAB was when i realised that Kendrick was on a different pedestal compared to drake,
Kendrick being the voice of a generation is one thing drake could never hope to achieve
Kendrick Lamar is HIP-HOP , he an emcee and a poet.
Truth
@@ScanlessTV6 j Cole yeah but Drake not. Can't be an Emcee if you don't write your own rhymes.
Kendrick Lamar Forever
Kendrick Lamar 4 Life
he performed with prince 🎉🎉
It’s wild looking back at that album I remember that and to see what Drake did disrespecting Tupac in a diss on Kenny proves how the two artists value those that came before them
Peace to The Geminis
Peace God
Geminis the most creative artists
I'm not surprised by most of the information because I know most of it. The Prince and Tupac side of it, I knew. Prince is my favorite musician. Tupac is my favorite rapper. I appreciate this video so much. RIP Prince and Tupac 💜🤍🕊
COMING HERE AFTER "LIKE THAT"
Prince outlived Mike Jack. For all you dogs getting burried, that's the K(ing) with all these 9's (inferior), you gonna see pet semetary BAM!
@@MultiRani10 I think the k with all these nines was a reference to kendrick with nines (gun) and also k9 dogs, but you may be onto something too
@@reaper.-._.-._.-._.-. true, or an A(K) with all the 9mms (referring to the rest). Surely it's a well crafted quintuple entendre as we're used to by Kendrick. Hence why we love him
This WAS CRAZY!!!! RIP PRINCE!
RIP 🕊
& R.I.P Brother 2Pac
@@hiphopdxI honestly can't believe, how you can say with a straight face, that Kendrick is a child of Prince and Pac. I listened to your video, and Kendrick is nowhere near that level of originality and influence. He's totally overrated, in my opinion....
@@richardjohnson3638 he idolizes both, honestly I didn't know he was into Prince too but Kendrick is obsessed with Tupac, it's no secret.
@@YoungPadawan995 True enough, but the video implies that he is of equal importance, as to those other legends, and I totally disagree. Kendrick was lucky enough come out when Rap was at a low point, in terms of creativity and originality. He filled a void without any true competition. He's definitely overrated, in my opinion....
How can people not love and believe this man? Just absolutely incredible
Imo you can’t be a fan of music if you can’t at least appreciate Prince and Kendrick.
Kendrick, Prince and Tupac are all Geminis ♊️ 🙌🏿
What the heeeell. I always pay attention to samples and catch on pretty fast. I never caught the sample from To Live and Die In LA and Do Me Baby. I love both songs too!
Amazing video Jeremy. Truly shining light on 3 of the greatest artists of 3 different generations. kendrick is truly a GOAT
Thank you so much for the comment!!! Glad you liked the video
Thank you!!!! Appreciate your comment
All of this is crazy to me because when I first heard of Kendrick was a little before Swimming Pools blew up!!! I started checking out his stuff and found a bunch of freestyle battle videos of KDot. Started listening to his music around the time Swimming Pools came out and honestly thought to myself, Kendrick is going to pick up were Tupac started, he’s going to change the game and hopefully the world, we gotta do what we didn’t do when our past greats were still on this earth, Protect them!!!!!
When Geminis are focused on something, they really make magic lol ♊♊♊
True statement
My daughter is a gemini and very true!! ❤
15:00 was real. Talk about “heavy is the head that wears the crown” that’s a lot for anyone to carry in their mind when they’re trying to navigate through life and express themselves through their art.
They are artists that speak to the heart bey9nd charts etc so it makes sense.
I thought he was gonna breakdown for a second. We gotta protect that brother man.
The response at 14:44 is why i love K. he's thoughtful, thinks before speak, and has genuine AND informed opinions.
Man see this is why I love Kendrick and he’s the GOAT who else would do this the way he does with that message other than him TODAY??? That’s the GOAT. THAT is what Hip Hop is and should always be!!
Yup. Prince was supposed to be on "Complexion". Too bad that that collab never came to fruition.
If prince would've produced and featured on Untitled 03 would've been fire
Tupac Shakur 💙
MJ was a media personality but Prince was more talented and didn’t have as much media attention as MJ but is legendary thru pure raw music. Prince over MJ anytime any day.
I love how the Dodgers cap has been a west coast staple for decades, but is making a come back stronger than ever, like The Undertaker with a new outfit and motivation in the 90s/2000s.
all three of these dudes are undeniable gems..excellent work!!
Lmao everyone in the comments are calling them geminis your not special
I've always seen the correlation between Dot and both these legends.
But I never thought they inter-loop like this. Changed my perspective, Widened my horizon, thanks.
Shout out DEHH for being the first to uncover the meaning of TPAB and how it was initially TPAC. Their shout out from kendrick was edited out of this particular documentary 🙏🏿❤️
Being a musician, Prince being my favorite artist and sharing a birthday with Tupac. This video is special to me. I follow after these artists as well, and learned a lot more about K. Dot in the process. Love ❤
Thanks for sharing HiphopDX! 🙌🏼This is something i never knew until now so much appreciated! May i add that you forgot to mention the song by Tupac 'How do you want it?' as this classic definitely has a Prince vibe 💯 Rest in Love & Peace Prince & Tupac 🙏🏼💜 Thanks to Kendrick for keeping it real and keeping the flame lit 🔥 💜
Boy, you can sure see the sincere authenticity of Kendrick here.

We need more deep dives!
Kendrick was feeling it
If people do their research on the Drake and Kendrick rap career people will see why Kendrick popped out the way he did. Drake has been shooting shots for a long time and Kendrick has been letting him slide, giving him passes letting Drake do his thing. Drake is a good pop artist but doesn't write half of his raps. Kendrick raps about life, what people goes through, life struggles and manage to have god to stand on and he writes his raps with being versatile with his music. He is heavy influence by old school music and a few rappers that writes their lyrics. Which most people can relate to if you grew up in the hood or lived around it to know what really goes on in the streets. Kendrick is an lyrical artist electricfying when it comes to his music while Drake is pop star making music that you can dance to pacifying the audience. A big difference between the two.
His children, the earthgang,spillage village
Love this video! 💯
Prince would of been so ill on Kendrick Lamar’s “Momma” sheesh 😮💨

They cut out the name of the blog that caught on to it. The name is Dead End Hip Hop. They have the original clip of the interview and where they said it.
Prince was my first musical influence. He is why I play guitar, bass, and piano. He even influenced me to write poetry. The reason why I type "U" instead of "You". Yes Prince was special to EVERYONE, but just a lil bit more special to all the artists, musicians, and creative minds of the world
Thanx
