It helps immensely that Nefrums turned resources up to maximum and pollution spread to minimum. That way he does not have to mess around with trains and biters so soon.

its kind of crazy how fast this guy is even while making a guide... i followed step by step on exact same seed and settings and finished in 6 hours, while pausing to watch the video. damn.
That's how it is, the next couple of times would be memorization of the steps and then practice for speed.
If you keep at it you'd probably get to around this speed in half a year if you keep using the same seed?
I will do this but with the Nintendo Switch version. Amazing game but too much complex.
In your description, if you reverse the times and the description, CZcams will actually parse it, and show the timestamps inside the video bar at the bottom, for increased viewer experience

I *think* it also needs 0:00 in order to work.
Every video I've seen with chapters does follow "H:mm ", though.

Awesome! Just smashed this first time for the there is no spoon achievement, so helpful!
There were other guides but they all wanted you to download a specific seed and copy blueprints, which takes the fun out of it imo. I liked this because I made a new map, so I could follow along (for factory size, ratios, and other thing that is too hard for a casual player), so I had to be creative with my factory design and this guide was just that - a guide, which I could follow when it suited me, and deviate when I need to.
I also got another 5 achievements at the same time - icing ontop of the cake!
There are blueprints for this exact run (and seed). Though to be fair it's still pretty involved, they aren't really 100% correct, and it's still a fair challenge... Especially when you try to do "lazy bastard" with it as well, which is what I did (and it cost me an hour in the early game alone). Overall pretty fun though.

Thanks for the guide. I was finally able to beat the game without getting anxiety about the placements of my buildings and belts. I finished in 11 hours.

Looking closely at the video there are so many small but important tricks that I'm stunned. Also the written guide is a valuable tool not found elsewhere - thanks again for your dedication
100% -- right down to the smelter designs, the double long boys, the buffer chests that lead to output lines ten minutes later. The forward planning is nuts.

Well..! I did "There is no spoon" literally yesterday for the Steam achievement (since I was playing offline before). Took me 4h15 but I was following Anti's spaghetti base. I wish I had that guide yesterday, that's way more clearer with the google doc. Thank for that, I might try to get sub 3 hours with it :D

I play modded using a quick start mod so I can start with a personal roboport and some construction bots. Makes scaling early on so much easier, but then I always wind up grinding to a halt once I find myself needing to run around to pick things up to keep my construction running(and then get bored because I'm no longer architecting the factory but just holding control and running back and forth over the chests wishing I added provider boxes to my quick start but always forgetting to do so since I never need them early on).
And here I am, at 540 hours total play, and can't even finish a slow run lol
my record is 13 h :D
and 400 h total play :D
My best one is 48H and I have 300h total play, tho I don't rush

Thanks for making the slides with all the steps, screenshots and crafting lists. This is amazing. Great guide overall. And a nice run. Really leisurely pace, placement is very flexible and the various builds are simplified compared to the WR builds which makes it way easier to comprehend. With Factorio 1.0 just released, it would be excellent.

Thanks for the tutorial! I've only been playing a short time and I've never built on the proper scale; this really opened my eyes to how fast you can actually build, place, and pickup items. And I managed to finish with 20 minutes left. Woohoo!

This run optimizes speed, not automation. If you want to play it while also automating everything (i.e. not hand-crafting) it's a bit more involved and way slower.

Bought the game last week, spend 6/7 hours in tutorial and free-play mode. Didn't know what I was doing, wanted to build a rocket so I grabbed the guide and video and started. Got a time of 11:15:37. Just watching the video and having the guide next to me saved me countless hours of figuring things out. So the achievement 'no time for chitchat' is totally doable as a total noob.
Now I know the basics and can try again :).
I just bought Factorio about a week ago and I've been playing for about 10-20 hours total. I must say that I love how you're keeping a steady pace. It's not too fast, and it's not too slow either.
It makes for a splendid guide overall, very much appreciated! 😄

Thank you for this very nice tutorial. After a few attempts, I managed 3:42, but there were major mistakes, so I'll try to improve it. One thing is for sure: I had a great respect for the speedrunning community, now I have admiration. I obviously knew that the planning was essential, but now I begin to realise how important the actual execution is, and how difficult it is to master it.

Thanks for putting this tutorial together! I just finished a 4h35m run thanks to this. I also learned just why you have specific steps in some places. Like, because I was slow, there were a lot of robot frames, so I thought 'sure, lets put all 1000 of them in the yellow science'. in the end it ate up all the speed modules and I didn't have enough rocket control units. And when I ran out of science to do, before setting up the purple sci production, and used up valuable resources.
Definitely going to try again for an under 4 hr time. :) Thanks again for recording this tutorial and sharing the guide document!

First thing to say, big respect for being able to not only speedrun and tow the line for world record paces, but today for providing guidance to everyone like this! I've bought myself Factorio a good while ago, back before it was on Steam, when I was watching Arumba way back when, playing an unknown game that really intrigued me despite the relatively simple graphics. I have since then completed runs several times, using bus, spaghetti galores, challenging myself with things like direct feed only and more. But while I had most of the achievements, There is no spoon kept eluding me. All of my attempts ending in frustrations and failure, and often by not really more than an hour or two of playing. But I couldn't seem to quite wrap my head around doing anything faster.
I couldn't quite follow the guide straight and forward, because of things like my attention span or knowing I would end up reading it over and over and over, over every lil details, rendering me a bit mad and not leading to much progress being made. But between it and watching you do a few runs. I did pick up a few little things. Like the steel array, which kept confounding me. Or buffering light oil for the rocket fuel step. And I think the biggest thing that bogged me down in the last steps, cutting off science parts and using their resources to boost out LDS and RCUs. While I did use production modules before, I was still surprised at the result of using those along several speed beacons around the Silo. Never before have I seen a rocket ready in about five minutes or less. Never ever.
Despite some struggles with needing to go for a second oil array that was further then I had wished, finicking it up a storm with balancing heavy and light oil to keep plastic alive, since my first setup had the advanced refineries on it. And one stupid mistake with a miner placement putting iron ore on my boiler lines breaking my power twice instead of just once, because I wasn't seeing more coming down and I thought I had messed up something that I didn't see while building up more copper lines for blue chips and I had solved things. That was quite a mess....
I am happy to celebrate by saying thank you to you too. And affirming high and loud, with a 7h58 minutes and 15 gosh dang seconds..... Finally! THERE IS NO SPOON!

I also follow the guide by "watching, pause, copy" and the timer for the "finish the game in 8 hours is at 4:13:39 left, while he is at 1 hour 22 minutes. Sure, my map is different (a bit more distance and fields are different) and i dont click as fast, but i keep losing more and more time. But still... bots are out, extra power got put down and now it's time to start yellow research, while i hope that the biters will not attack me again. In theory i should be able to just save the world, build the whole layout, save the blueprint code, load the save and then just put down the finished blueprint... then i just have to wait for the bots to finish it. He has 1 hour left and i have 4 hours... i guess that achievement should be done soon.

Finally got that last achievement after all these years! :D Took 5 hours 38 minutes of game time even with the help though. >_< And probably more like 10 hours total between building and pausing to watch and re-watch parts of the video! I'm terrible at planning where to put things quickly. Usually takes me forever to get to the rocket stage. I think my previous best was around 12 hours... good enough for 37/38 but I could never come up with a plan good enough to get me that last one. Thanks again!

Great guide! Just fyi, you can completely disable pollution, enemy expansion, and enemy evolution while keeping all achievements. Also, you can limit the map size (or use an island) in conjunction with the large starting size to prevent biters from spawning at all.
those settings don't remove all achievements, but they do remove speedrun. Increasing the start size, in combination with no spreading of the pollution( it stays where it's created, so it doesnt generate attacks ) and combined with the sheer speed of the run, the enemies don't have time to grow to reach up to him , and they never get triggered by pollution, within the rules allowed for the achievement to remain active.
I did this, and also set "starting area size" to 600%. Got the achievement and never even saw a biter.

I used this guide and seed and got the achievement for under 8 hours!! Thanks, you are insanely good and fast at building. Took me 5h 19min (7.5h if you count the pauses that the game doesn't), feel a bit of shame that I used the guide and did not do it all on my own but oh well.

I practiced the beginning of the run a big chunk of yesterday (for the first time), and as of automating steel furnaces I'm 9 minutes behind you. However, I just went to build the big power plant and saw I set up mall power poles wrong and have zero steam engines and underground pipes (poles blocking inputs of regular pipes). Back the the drawing board! Hahaha! Thank you so much for doing this! Havin' a blast!

Awesome step-by-step guide! It allowed me to experience the game in a whole new way, and finally finish the run in 3 and a half hours--not bad for someone with 2 left hands and the reaction time of a dead turtle.
Then I found out that the "No spoon" achievement is actually sub 8 hours instead of sub 4... wot! ^^;

I finished your tutorial just in 7 hours and 50 minutes with all achievements (such as "Lazy bastard" and all other).
And I had some issues, because used a bit different placement for the stuff. I got in trouble when my "processors factory" smashed into "electric engine production" after 8th assembling machine and some other my little issues.
Lazy bastard was quite a challenge for me, that's was just my second world after my first win after almost 43 hours :)
Feature "diffusion ratio" to 0% was quite helpful. But looked like a bit cheating for me :)
