Lake District: Great Gable, Green Gable, Base Brown, Brandreth, Grey Knotts from Honister Slate Mine

  • This is a fantastic walk in The Lake District that picks up 5 Wainwrights in around 12km or 4 Wainwrights in the circular route of 9.2km.
    Starting at Honister Slate Mine we head up the first climb to Grey Knotts. From there we head over on a relatively flat and grassy walk to Brandreth giving ample time for recovery. From this point the ascent to Green Gable is made. There are fantastic views to be had and if you are walking all the Wainwright's there is an opportunity to nip off the route and pick up Base Brown. Walking back over the same ground to the circular route we complete the climb to Green Gables. At this point Great Gable towers above us.
    Taking the short down to Windy Gap we then start the scramble up Great Gable. The climb is steady and affords us great views when looking back. On the top of Great Gable there is a walk over to the war memorial at the summit before admiring the surrounding mountain ranges.
    A walk that offers scrambles, views and Wainwrights a plenty this is something for everyone. I hope you enjoy it!

    Great Gable is one of my favourites and in my view, much more rewarding than nearby Scafell Pike, I hope you enjoy it😃. More info in the description. Thanks for watching ⛰👍🙏

    Great video. We are doing that route starting from Seathwaite for our next walk. Great Gable will be our 100th Wainwright.

    Hi Tony, Hi Alison, a cracking route there. I did all those starting at Gatescarth Farm and doing Fleetwith Pike first. Then came down Windy gap and in to Ennerdale past Black Sail hut. Although I didn’t go up to Great Gable because I’d already ticked that off. You got to love Great Gable, the views from the summit are just amazing.
    All the best guys
    Dave 😀⛰🥾

    Hi Tony, Ive just subscribed after seeing a couple of your fabulous videos. Love the amount of route information which goes with them too. Very helpful for my future hikes. I did do Grey Knotts with my wife about 2 months ago but we went up a grassy path which runs parallel and right of the fence you went up. Its meets the fence at the stile which you cross over to do the final push. We intended doing Brandreth and Green Gable too but the wind and rain got too much for my other half so we came back down the way you ascended. Looking forward to catching up with some of your other vids when I get chance. Cheers ATB

      Hi Tony, Welcome aboard! I know the way you mentioned. Best to get down sometimes rather than push on. I’ve exited a couple early this year mainly due to high winds.
      The videos are in folders for each of the 7 Wainwright fells if you have a particular area in mind. I’m just getting ready to release day 3 of the Cumbria Way so if you fancy a look at 1 and 2 they are also in their own folder.
      Enjoy it out there and thanks for the support mate 🥾😁⛰️

    • @trekkingwithtony
      @trekkingwithtony  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Hi mate, you can go but the reason I don't is that Great Gable is done first, which to me is like having your pudding first. I'd rather build up to it. It is great walk either way but that is why I go this way around.

    • @gardnerfamilytravels
      @gardnerfamilytravels Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thanks Tony, that makes sense to me. The route you took also seems to have the steadier descent which is preferable. Thanks for the video, subbed

    • @trekkingwithtony
      @trekkingwithtony  Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@gardnerfamilytravels Yes, Allison’s knees prefer a steady descent so that’s so my walks always try and factor that in. Welcome board 😁🥾⛰️

    • @gardnerfamilytravels
      @gardnerfamilytravels Před 2 měsíci +1

      One final question mate regarding your initial descent off the Great Gable summit. How did you find the north west route coming down? I see some routes that descend the way you came up, and then walk across (west) to the smugglers path from windy gap? Thanks

    • @trekkingwithtony
      @trekkingwithtony  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I definitely wouldn’t recommend coming down the way I came up. The way I went down does require a bit of clambering but not as much as if you went down to windy gap. The routes I do tend to favour steeper up and gentle down mate. Safer that way in my view ⛰️😁🥾
