    you should not need to change the thermostat out buddy, as if the coolant drops below the 76Deg of the Mishimoto thermostat then it will start to close again in order to maintain the correct operating temperature.
    We have never had a issue with running these thermostats even in conjunction with the large Koyo Radiators.

    Should just get MazdaEdit and change the fan cut in points in the factory PCM, no need for adding extra crap that can fail, you can also do other things like increase the OMP rate, timing, fuel maps and block CEL's, you should look in to it if you haven't already, well worth it.

    I personally think u should keep the aftermarket thermostat, and see if there's another way to get the fans to start working w/ a lower temperature. As some pointed out, the OEM thermostat doesn't open all the way until very late in the game, so your cooling efficiency will drop. The thermostat is like a door. It's triggered to open at one temperature, but the door doesn't open all the way until a certain temperature. The wider the door is opened, the more coolant can flow through the door. So the OEM thermostat won't allow for as much coolant to flow through it, therefore the coolant that actually gets cooled and reaches the radiator will be less in volume, if u get what I'm saying.
    I just got a Mishimoto thermostat on mine, and I'm gonna get the fan temperatures changed at a tuning event hosted by my shop in a few weeks. I'm not 100% sure how they will do it though.

  • @tananusin
    @tananusin Před 5 lety +12

    OEM thermostat opens at 82c and fully opens at 95c so mazda sets the fan to operate at 97c is make sense. If the fan operates when the thermostat is not fully open, like 90c, the fan's motor will be overworked. The aftermarket thermostat opens at 76c and fully open like 88c, the fan should be set to operate like 90c. In my opinion, the problems you have are the fan operating too early and the fan won't stop operating when the temperature drops.

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  Před 5 lety +2

      I agree, the fans should start at 86 and stop at 83. This would be optimal. Correct me if im worng. But this mod will come in handy when drifting. The reason im switching to the oem thermostat, is that after the koyo 53mm radiator install I fear temperatures will be too low for everyday driving, and the engine will wear out prematurely. What's your opinion on this?

    • @tananusin
      @tananusin Před 5 lety

      By using 82c OEM thermostat and setting the fan starting at 86c, at 86c there is too little water coming out for the fan to remove the heat because the water is just coming out. In term of efficiency, it is very low and the fan's motor will prematurely broke from continuously keep the temperature less than 86c. You should let the the thermostat fully open first then start the fan. I don't know why your fan won't stop. In your video, I think the fan stoped because there was no water passing your sensor. Currently, I am using no thermostat at all and set the fan by controlling ECU to start at 88c and the fan auto-stop at 83c. This setting let my fan only works in traffic. If you are drifting a lot, I suggest you also change the oil cooler thermostat. rotaryperformance.com/products/oil-cooler-thermostat

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  Před 5 lety

      I see, got it. So the problem is the fan not stopping on time. i think i need to start learning how to use mazda edit to modify my ecu. I think that as a drift spec, my current setup is ok, but as a daily driver, running between 76 and 85° C is not optimal for the engine, What do you think?
      The oil cooler mod is definitely on my list. Been seeing temperatures on the track day go pretty high, and i can't stay on the track for a longer period.

    • @tananusin
      @tananusin Před 5 lety

      Yeah, running between 76 and 86c is definitely not optimal for the engine. I think running between 85c to 95c in every condition is optimal for rotary engine. However in your case, you might need to run 80c to 90c in daily driving so that you can drifting in 90c to 95c depending on condition.
      Beware if you'r planing to use 53mm radiator. The optimal thickness of the radiator is also need to consider depending on the speed of your car is traveling. The thicker the radiator, the more resistant for the air to pass through. In drifting condition, the car travels at low speed so there is low velocity of air pass through the radiator. You might need a bigger fan's motor to force the air through the radiator. Koyorad offers 2 sizes of RX-8 radiator. I don't know which one suits you more.

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  Před 5 lety

      @@tananusin I went with the 53mm core one, the thicker radiator they have for the rx8. I'll see if mishimoto offers bigger fan motors, so I can upgrade my fans accordingly.

    Glad you were able to get it figured out. I did end up relocating mine to the heater hose on the right side. In the process I actually broke off the male connectors on the adapter. I did the best I could to solder the wires on what little terminals I had left. Still doesn’t seem like the fans are turning on when they should. For me they are turning on at around 190f. At least that’s the temperature reading I’m getting from the app on my phone with the OBD2 reader. It still seems to be running cooler than it did before. Unless of course I start going up hill and it’s even worse with the AC on. Temps start climbing above 210. I replaced the cheap eBay aluminum radiator with a Koyo, and a new coolant bottle. I’m thinking maybe something with the oil cooling system is causing some heat problems as well.

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  Před 5 lety

      Thanks man! Hmmm have you tried bleeding the cooling system again? I like to open the cap, let the car warm up, and them rev it to 9k rpm and hold it for 3 seconds. I do this 4 times. I noticed that in this process a lot of small air bubbles come out, and the coolant temperature dropped from 105 to 98°c when idling for long time.
      But I always have my odb2 app open and carefully monitor temps.

      Here is a different mod instead that most people overlook.
      Use spiralmaxes in the exhaust, two per each tip. Spot weld the outer one in place and it will hold both Spiralmaxes in place.
      Has an easy experiment to show you how they work. Get a 2 or 3 liter soda bottle. Put a line 2/3rds from the top and fill with water to that level. Have your hand on the opening and flip upside down. Use a stopwatch to get the time it takes to empty, do this 3 to 5 times to get an average time. That is the control time.
      Next just get the water spinning before you empty the bottle. If you have a vortex then you are doing it right. Get the time average time again and there you go. Best to have a helper running the stop watch.
      I run Spiralmaxes in all my cars!
      Just some suggestions from a retired vehicle designer... do whatever you want with this info.

      Vtec, Vortec, Voltec, Ecotec and Ecoboost are my designs as well as many others. Notice how the names are similar?
      Anyways the RX-8 has many upgrade possibilities some of them are prototypes.
      I have a 1998 5 speed Protege that is modified but still needs some more work. Probably be selling it faily soon and moving on to my next project. It would work great for a sleeper or just a fairly powerful 1.5 liter to get around with. Last tank it got 43 MPG and it can beat some 6 cylinder vehicles.
      Someone that will fix it up even more, is prefered. It will need a upgraded clutch...at least a stage 2 clutch and some other work.
