In this video, I will show the easiest way to perform an external flow CFD simulation in just 5 simple steps!
We will be using Altair Virtual Wind Tunnel for simulation setup coupled with Altair Acusolve for actual computation. With a maximum speed limit of Mach 0.7, Altair Acusolve is literally pushed to its limit as we simulate an aeroplane flying at Mach 0.56
As a bonus step, I will also show how to extract stunning graphics of your simulation results using Acufieldview, which is a dedicated post-processor for CFD.

hey, when i set preference folder and then try to import the model, i get a dialog box stating "intersection error- set acusolve installation folder" what is it that i didnt do right?
I have got 2019 version almost everything is same. But command terminal pops and goes . Will my simulation work?
There is probably something wrong with the model. Please check the OUT file for more information.
virtual wind tunnel is not available in my 2021 hyperworks student edition package..how can I get the VWT..?? Please suggest
Hey Swapnil, from where you learnt all these concepts and software skills. You are pretty strong In this domain and I wish you do wonders in your field. Thanks
Thanks Uttkarsh! Glad you found this helpful.
love your tutorials. please make more videos on altair cfd
Thanks Samyak! I am working on more content related to CFD 👍🏻
Can you show how to rotate the model at specific angle about x,y and z in Accufield view? I need to capture the pressure plot normal to the surface. In my case angle of attack is 45deg.
Can you please confirm that you are running VWT on Windows because when I try to run it shows that it needs a Linux OS to run?
Yes, I was running it on Windows OS. I never faced any issues like the one you mentioned.
how to install Altair Virtual Wind Tunnel....Can you give me Link???
How and where did you create the prism layer cells and the volume mesh ? The quality of cells etc ?
The CFD tetramesh option takes in user inputs and creates the boundary layers, prism transition elements and internal tetramesh automatically. Mesh quality can be checked later using the options provided in Tools panel.
Hey Swapnil, do you have any video related to atmospheric pollutant and species transport in atmosphere which simulated by Hyperworks CFD (acusolve)?
please let me know
Hey! My expertise is not CFD so I don't think I will be making any tutorials on this topic. Thanks for the suggestion though. Sounds interesting!
@@Aeroswap well thank you very much for your reply. is it possible to find someone who is expert in such topic using hyperworks cfd. any suggestion
Can you show how to find traction along x,y,z direction and drag lift and pressure coefficients for external subsonic frow in acusolve v2017? Thanks
Hi bro, wich version of Acusolve do you have installed?
From where did you learnt this software, because I am persuving aeronautical engineering and i want to learn hypermesh can you help me..?
Hello Gaurav,
Whatever I have learnt till now, it is completely from user manuals and freely available online learning resources from Altair website.
I never enrolled for any course to learn Hypermesh.
Feel free to contact me in case you neee any help in your learning process. My email is provided in the 'About' section of this channel.
Good luck.
@@Aeroswap thank you sir❤️
Hi, how I can downland and install virtual wind tunnel?
Hi, thanks for the excellent video.
I am currently using VWT 2020 and my solver is 'ultraFluidX' not 'AcuSolve' in the video. Then I came across the error saying 'The ultraFluidX solver is not support on Windows....' when I tried to run. Is there any way to use 'AcuSolve' in my VWT 2020??
Hey there!
I understand your problem. Take a look at this thread from Altair official Forum -
forum.altair.com/topic/40062-new-virtual-wind-tunnel-2020-for-acusolve/
Seems like VWT does not support Acusolve anymore. That's disappointing, I hope they make some changes in the future!
@@Aeroswap thanks for your help!
Hyperworks provides 2017.2 as student version can i perform same analysis in that version
Yes! You will face no issues.
All the features are same in 2017 version.
Thank u so much
why did not u extracted mid surface for mesh
Hi Zahir, the CAD used in this tutorial is already a surface geometry so midsurfacing is not required.
@@Aeroswap thanks for the answer sir i appreciate it ❤️
@@Aeroswap i watched many of your videos buti have the 2019 version so for me i didn't understand many things if you have any other videos which used 2019 version it would be helpful
Sir can you share some bench mark problem of External wind flow over rectangular or circular plate, sphere, hemisphere, cube etc, cd, cl, cm value extraction for different angle of atack.
Thanks for the suggestion. I will work on this topic soon!
Can you share your email id and contact no.
My email address is provided in the 'About' section of this channel. Feel free to reach out regarding queries and suggestions.
Sir email id is not available in your channel"about"section.
Hey I am not finding half of the commands mentioned here in hyperworks 2021
Yes, that is possible. A lot of changes were made in newer versions of Hyperworks. I will probably redo this tutorial using the new Hyperworks soon. Thanks for pointing this out!
@@Aeroswap I am actually having final year project submission by end of next week. I need to analyse my model immediately. Can you please help?
@@Aeroswap I have no idea how to use hyperworks
You can reach me via email. My contact details are provided in the 'About' section of this channel.
@@Aeroswap ok
Which software did you use for the wind tunnel? Was it hyperworks virtual wind tunnel?
Yes.
@@Aeroswap could u please send thr altair one market place link for this software , also is the solver name accusolve????
I tried doing this analysis on UltraFluidX, but i get the message that this solver only works on linux and not on windows, could you please suggest me an alternative
I loved ur explanation bro. Keep going on.can you plz tell me why my simulation is not working. I am working on licensed version of the Hyperwork CFD 2021. I am at initial stage right now. After defining the physics, mesh and boundary condition when i click on run from solution tab, My Simulation does not start. am I missing something?
Please check the solver output file to see if there were any issues with the setup. This will help you to make modifications to the model and resolve the errors.
Very Good effort. Your effort helps student fraternity. Thanks a lot. I couldn't able to run VWT. It gives massage" Acusolve path not set. Please set the path in File>options>Acusolve" but inside file, there is no option botton. Please help me.
Thanks Barun! I never faced this issue myself. Maybe it is because you are using a different version of the software.
I will see what I can find about this and let you know if I find a solution!
@@Aeroswap thanks for your quick response. I have resolved the Problem. It was some software configuration issue. Sir can you make one video depicting wind load(Force) at nodal point of same aeroplane. Due to this wind load, how much stress is developed in the backup structure, i wanr to know. Thanks in advance.
Good to know you resolved the issue! Thanks for the video suggestion. I will work on it soon 👍🏻
How to open virtual wind tunnel please
Sir, please make some videos in internal flow aerodynamics
Hi, I'm glad to find your channel. I'm Korean high school student trying to receive student edition.
I have two question.
I've sent Email twice this time cause It didn't work last time. Could I succeed this time?
Can student edition run both Hypermesh and VWT?
Hi !
I'm sure you will get Hypermesh in the student edition but I do not know whether they provide VWT in the student package.
A better option would be to ask your college for a full version license. Most of the universities can acquire full version licenses from Altair for academic and research purposes.
@@Aeroswap I received e mail!
but it seems that student edition doesn't have VWT.
and small high school doesn't have licenses. I would probably give up with wind tunnel and work with CAD.
are you keep uploading videos? Your channel will be my great teacher.
Thank you for help again!
Sorry to hear that.
Yes I will keep posting more videos! 👍🏻
As a fresher how much a person can earn in cae field
Hey there! There are plenty of opportunities in this field. You can secure internships or even full time positions at top CAE companies if you have the right skill set.
@@Aeroswap l am asking abou starting average salaries for cae modeller
How did u get full version ?
Puchase it.
why does it no need to generate volume mesh?
Hey there!
Unlike FEA, we are not concerned with the deformation and stress generated in the actual aircraft.
We are using the aircraft just as a disturbance in the flow field. So, only capturing the surface geometry with a 2D mesh is sufficient. No volume mesh is required as we are not dealing with internal changes.
The solver will automatically generate a volume mesh for the whole wind tunnel. Doing it manually wouldn't hurt, but it is not necessary!
@@Aeroswap Okay, automatically generate volume mesh for whole wind tunnel just blows my mind. BTW, im a ICEM user.
Yeah Virtual Wind Tunnel automates a lot of steps! Post-processing is also done by the software itself.
@@Aeroswap Can i import my mesh from ICEM to Hypermesh?
Yes. I have never done this myself but exporting in 'Nastran Fluent' format from ICEM and then importing it into Hypermesh will definitely work.
If it works, let me know please!
Is this student version of hypermesh?
Hey Akshay! This is the full version, but you can perform this simulation using the student edition. Just remember to keep the element count below 50,000 and you will be good to go.
@@Aeroswap how do i keep the element count below 50000?
Create a coarser mesh. This can be done by increasing the element size while generating the 2D mesh from automesh panel.
You can check the number of elements in the bottom left corner status bar or by using the Count tool from Tools panel.
How did u get full version
This isn't how you perform a CFD simulation of an aircraft.
Would you please elaborate ?
Yeah you need to check the required turbulence model, calculate the y+ values, go for pseudo transient and transient analysis. The one which you did up was to only the animation of flow stream. Which is also not accurate.
Yes you are right. I would like to point out that the objective of this video was to show the usage of a particular tool.
Nevertheless, I will try to get into the fundamental concepts in one of my upcoming videos. Thanks for the suggestion!
