- In this video, Kelly will show you how to tie one of the most popular streamers of 2017: The Mini Dungeon
Lets face it, as much as we all love to throw big articulated streamers there are certain times when smaller, food-based patterns are far more effective. For these situations, we present to you the mini sex dungeon. This fly has been a code cracker for us during the dog days of summer, as well as early spring and winter when trout become more lethargic due to colder water temps. Everything in this fly is tied with the same proportions as the original sex dungeon, but Kelly added a couple stacks of MFC’s barred buggerbou for a mottled effect on all the color combinations except for the black variation. The Mini Dungeon measures in at roughly 2.5 in. and is available in white, olive, yellow, black, natural, and crawfish orange, and cream. Size 6.

Back in the 1960's Phil DeMetri of the Housatonic River was fishing 3/0 8x long streamer flies. He caught some very impressive trout on them. He once told me; despite his use of the big flies that a #6 6x long fly is the most effective streamer size of all. Glad to see you essentially saying much the same thing. Also, I ordered tying materials from your shop and was really impressed by the quality, there isn't a good fly shop near where I live so I often need to order materials online and it usually pretty hit or miss, but these were remarkably good.

First season for me tying and using this fly. I was out with 3 fellow fishermen and they caught nothing while I caught some tiny perch on a clouser. Then I tied the mini dungeon on and had bite after bite. Big perch and decent chub. The profile and the articulation of the dungeon must be the trigger. Same thing happened the same day some hours later. Looking forward to the next day fishing this! Thanks for sharing such a detailed tutorial of your fly!!! This will certainly catch some big fish in autumn.
when i tied my first mini dungeon (before i watched this particular video) i wound up setting the eyes between the commercial eyes and the original eyes, two stacks behind, then a good spin up front, i really liked the result.
Although I like the intro graphic, I find it very useful seeing the finished fly as the video thumbnail. Good move and thanks for the quality content as always!

These are some of my favorites to use. The legs fell off one of the ones I've been using and it still catches plenty of fish.

Really enjoying these videos. Like you guys I make my videos longer to let people see the flies tied and explained. I like your style than these other guys that fast forward through it to some horrible glitchhop soundtrack.

This exact fly scored me my biggest Brown on fly, or any fish. I am one year converted from spin gear. Silk kitty is next, im convinced it will become my next favorite. In reality, I love them all. My biggest producers are the bangtails, flatliners, belly bumpers, and now the dungeons. This dungeon is a Rockstar. Thank you sir!
Try the original Zoo Cougar. I swear it's produce more 20+ inch browns than any other fly I've used in 20 years. I hands never caught anything but browns on the dang thing. It's like it was created just for them.

@@Ericbyhookorbycrook yellow. It's the only yellow fly in my box. I never have luck with that color in any other pattern, but it's by far my favorite. I'll tie 10 yellows to 1 black or olive. I only use yellow

I only just finished my second fly, but I'm ready to try a new pattern. Let the games begin! Yellow-ish, it will be, I only have natural hair at the moment, but the back side could go yellow easily. Awesome Video and killer fly!
I like to use tan coloured sculpin wool thinly spun in a dubbing loop as a substitute for the deer hair. Looks awesome, and your fly sinks faster while still pushing a good amount of water, though sculpin wool is not as effective as deer hair concerning the last point.
You can also add some bars to the head with a dark brown or grey marker pen.
When you have the hands of a surgeon, but you love fly fishing for trout.
Any idea if putting the lead eyes on top would successfully invert the hook? I could see the deer hair being to buoyant and causing the whole thing to ride sideways.

So you don’t need bare hook to set the collar? It can be right on top of the wing, legs, etc.?

Man you make tying with GSP look easy. It looks like you have zero thread tension but your materials stay where you put them. Dammit I suck.
Nice, concise video, Kelly. . . I've come to believe that the rubber legs are important to the profile. I'd get quite a few of these minnow trapping years ago. When they lie on the bottom, they spread their pecs like a mud-skipper. The bony part of the fins are root beer colored. And, they do extend back to mid-body length, crossing through the mottled appearance. I can't say that is critical to success, but, since I bought into that BS from your tying years ago, I'm not changing now. ;-)
Curious question, if one was to use this pattern for pike, is there a hook recommendation you might have?
Jason, you could tie a regular Sex Dungeon or a Triple Dungeon and use 2/0 Universal Predator X’s from Partridge for Pike

Another great, informative video. I know it's a couple of years old, but I have a question regarding the length of the collar. You say you want it so it extends about a third of the body length, but then you tie it so it's a third of the front hook’s body length. If I'm trying a single hook sculpin pattern, is the collar a quarter to a third of the overall body length, or is it less? I'm just trying to think through proportions...
Randy, I basically just go with a third to a quarter the length of the hook, doesn't matter what you end up with if you like the way looks and it swims, its more so that you have a way to get the collar the same every time. I had a tendency to make my collars to short when I was younger and it always bugged me so I started using the hook as a gage and didn't have the problem anymore. thanks man, Kelly
I have to be really careful in my state about fishing with one hook. Maybe I'll just clip the trailing hood on its bend?
Sean, in areas with a single hook law I cut the back hook off but I try to leave some of the bend, seems to track the fly a little better? Dont think it make that much difference though. Thanks, KG

Kelly you do the best videos. As a tier since the 70's I learn a lot watching your ties both the oral instruction and also by watching your unspoken tips. I have a question in regards to the marabou tails for the Wooly Sculpin and the Dungeon. You recommend placing the grizzly over the cream marabou feather, but when I tie it and all the photos I have seen of those flies the orientation is side by side. To me these two feathers lack symmetry and do not appear in the correct placement when completed.
Thanks Paul, Not sure how the others are done but I always stack mine, if I am two toning my tails it has to go as a stack. Seems like it would be hard to get then to lay properly if they were side by side? I also two tone a lot of my own flies like the one attached but regardless I stack mine. Currently tying a mini dungeon, for the streamer I used a cream marabou as bottom tail feather with two less dense grissly marabou feathers paired over bottom cream marabou. I like the way the three feathers look, thicker marabou at the bottom with two paired feathers stacked on top.

Kelly, This is my first articulating fly I've ever tried to tie. What are you using to secure the rear fly? i have the same vice as you so i figured id copy you ( if you don't mind lol)

Rat, I use neck hackle generally off the top of low grade dry fly necks, you can use cheaper strung hackle too. KG

Kelly, should have been more specific. After you already attached front and the rear sections, you secured the rear section of the fly in what looks like some type of rubber or some sort of stretching material. It looks like it really helps keep the rear section out of the way. At the 32:04 part of the video.
Anthony, oh got it. That is just a piece of a rubber band I put slit in. I drilled a hole in the material clip and put a ring eye screw in the clip. I had a small dental rubber band on there originally and it finally broke so I just cut a piece a rubber band and put a slit in each end and pulled it over the screw. Then just a slit in the end the hook goes thru.The lighter rubber band worked better because it wasn't stronger than the clip and with the bigger rubber band it will pull the clip down on occasion. Heh, I was lucky enough to be invited to WY for some fly fishing, and after a day of fucking with dries, watching guys throw dries on a dropper and even, (GASP!) a BOBBER, I decided to put my New England streamers to the test, as the dries and nymphs were only yielding average and smaller trout. Well... I tossed on a fat sculpin that I catch everything from brookies to rainbows and browns on and what do you know? I started drawing the bigger trout in -sometimes they'd streak at it from 10 ft away and in heavy current!
My nephew told me, "Kelly Galloup does this with fat streamers all the time!" I was like, "Who the heck is Kelly Galloup?"
He was shocked, but told me how you've been doing this for years out here with great success. No small wonder there, as when trout adjust to the leaner and relatively bug short months of late summer, (it was August,) they start to get territorial and ravenously hungry for bait fish who are also in their prime... and hit streamers like a ton of bricks.
We hit a fly shop and picked up this fly and a few other Galloup designs and SLAYED the cutthroats the rest of the week while the dry guys suffered through picky bites and short fish.
I've been a shore-bomber since I first picked up a fly rod many years ago, and have always enjoyed chucking streamers around.
