  • In this video, Kelly will teach you how to tie one of his favorite little sculpin patterns of all time: The Wooly Sculpin. This is a great pattern for those of you just getting into tying streamers, and one that relatively effortless to fish on a sinking line. The Wooly Sculpin is very similar to a sculpin pattern that was originally designed by Ed Shenk back in the 70's, and Kelly simply put a hackle on it to fill out the body and removed the marabou wing he used to tie in behind the head. This fly has the ability to be fished in many different ways to imitate fleeing or injured sculpin, and you can easily add a conehead up front if you want this fly to get deeper in the water column or prefer to fish streamers on a floating line.

    Hello I am a 62 year old lady, newly retired and am teaching myself the art of fly tying. Out of all the tutorials online I'm really enjoying yours. I like the way you explain the use of equipment and materials. I live in the Interior of British Columbia Canada and most of your fly tying can be used here for our Rainbow Trout. Thanks and keep making the great videos.

    Thanks Kelly . I will be 54 years old this year and your video's show me how to purchase my fly rod ( Set-Up ) and all that good stuff. Now I want to try tying my own flies as time goes on. I learn by watching videos then reading books and magazine and such. Thanks again and please keep making videos ,...just so cool !

    Just watching the Wooly Sculpin video... I too am a 64 y.o. tyer. The difference between me and the guy mentioned in the video is that I tied my first fly in my mid 30's. At the age of 40 I worked in England where I became a member of the Wessex Fly Tyer's Guild. Over the following years I became discouraged in terms of my ability to assimilate book fly tying instructions and stopped tying for long periods. My flies were and still are, not consistent and up to the standard of what one would find in a fly shop.
    While some folks may not appreciate the loads of tips and dialogue you give, Kelly, I DO appreciate it and have learned a great deal watching your videos. Not having those Wessex guys looking over my shoulder, I constantly run into problems handling materials and getting them on the hook correctly. I'm certainly hoping that either our local fly shop or our Cabelas will start some classes.
    The other issue I seem to always have is NOT having all the materials and/or hooks referenced in these videos. Living in NW Montana, there's only so much snow plowing one can do and I'm constantly looking for a new pattern to tie. It's sometimes frustrating not having the materials and the wife thinks I spend way too much on my hobby. Maybe a little more material substitution advice might help?
    Keep up the good instruction.

    Hi Kelly. Thanks for mentioning Pennsylvania's Ed Shenk. The 1976 Garcia Fishing Annual also featured an article that he wrote about sculpins. I started fishing the streams that he wrote about in that article because I lived less than an hour from them. A few years later I got to know Ed when I joined the Trout Unlimited chapter where he was also a member. I learned to tie his sculpins, and they worked well for me on wild brown trout and smallmouth bass.

    Great and simple pattern that will fish well! In thinking about it, this would be a good foundational video pattern to start with before someone goes messing with articulation wire, eyes, rubber legs and more complex flies. After watching your videos a couple years ago, I had to go back and correct some foundational flaws in my hair handling technique that I had learned and packed around since the 1980’s. Your video series this year far surpasses even your earlier videos- very well done guys!

    • @TheSlideinn
      @TheSlideinn  Před 6 lety +2

      Rich-
      Totally agree. People get really frustrated when they are tying articulated patterns and mess up on the head after all that work. The great thing about wooly sculpins and cougars is that they force you to learn the very foundational aspects that you discuss in order to have them look clean. Really appreciate the positive feedback on the videos this season, and we have some other good ones in store for you in the months to come. - John

    I have a question for you all. I have started tying up a few Wooly Sculpins with improving success. However, I noticed that the collars on those shown in your on-line shop are way longer than what Kelly tied in the video. Perhaps they are commercial version? In any case, I would be interested in your take on the collar. Thanks much & hope I can make it back out to Montana soon. Ed

    The other day I was looking through my arsenal, and was planning out my single hook flies. I'm leaving for the White River tomorrow, and decided to reread Modern Streamers for Trophy Trout (ps whens the new one coming out?), and it hit me- I hadn't tied, and didn't have a single solitary Wooly Sculpin left from when I batch tied them two or three years before .Put it to the top of the list. If I had to list my favorite single hook streamers, it would be in the top 1 or 2. Very versatile, easy to tie, easy to fish.

    • @beastcoastflycompany4724
      @beastcoastflycompany4724 Před 6 lety +1

      PS- I know you like forming these heads by hand with the blade- with so many pre made cutters for other materials, you should design a tool that holds the blade at the exact bend that you like it. It has markers for consistency. I prefer doing it by hand as well at this point, but I see so many guys struggle getting the shapes down. If Tommy could get someone to build a D&D wedge cutter, you two could print money lol.

      @TheSlideinn  Před 6 lety

      Robert, I use the Renzetti but there are plenty on the Market. If price is an object I would say the the Renzetti traveler is by far the best rotary for the money. When you just start comparing the vises they are all pretty good in the higher price points just different and regardless of brand all really good, kind of a Ford Chevy thing. I tie on the presentation 4000.

    Kelly, it seems that a lot of successful streamers incorporate a woolly bugger, this streamer is a bugger with a deer hair head. The Dungeon has a bugger basis, Charlie Craven's Gonga and Double Gonga... theres something about that basic bugger body that is magic.

  • @EMD_Ski
    @EMD_Ski Před 2 lety

    I started tying earlier this year and been doing pretty well overall, but working with deer hair is a struggle. I can create good collars and get a good spin on the head, but no matter what I do it seems to want to spin on the hook, so when it's done if I take and twist it, I can rotate the whole head to the side. I'm using nanosilk, and it's like it's too slick maybe. I put a good thread base down and go as tight as i can without cutting the hair, but for some reason I don't seem to be getting any "bite" on the shank. I've tried practicing just doing heads on bare hoolks, cutting it all off and and trying again, but I'm not getting any better Any thoughts on like "common mistakes" I might be making?

    • @TheSlideinn
      @TheSlideinn  Před 6 lety

      Not really a jigging fly no matter how light you pack the hair. We move this fly actively and try to give it a more darting retrieve like a natural sculpin; however, the conehead variation of this fly is a money jig fly

  • @ChrisBalfanz
    @ChrisBalfanz Před rokem

    Curious if you've tried clipping the bottom of the palmered hackle on the body for a flatter profile? And is it just me or does this fly seem too long in overall length compared to the natural? Regardless, hooked a big one on an olive wooly sculpin yesterday (snapped tippet off)!

    • @TheSlideinn
      @TheSlideinn  Před rokem +1

      Chris, I never have clipped it flat, I like the effect the hackle has for shape illusion with building little weight. As to the natural and the size, scuplin are a very diverse minnow and can have lots of different sizes (mottled and slimly) being two of the most common and they are 2 to 4 inches in most the rivers I have fished but I fish this fly from a size 6 to 1/0. Nice! Bucktail is probably the best way to get into the streamer game as it is very easy to work with. Once you get comfortable tying deceivers, this is a great pattern to start in on because it teaches you two very important aspects: How to properly counter rib your hackle and how to make a cougar/dungeon style head.

    • @TheSlideinn
      @TheSlideinn  Před 6 lety

      Ryan-
      Not yet but we should probably get one going on it. It is essentially a tapered sinking line that really shines for flies in that 5"-9" range. The 330 is a canon and best fished at 25 feet + while the 280 is a little more forgiving.

    • @RyanWaxman
      @RyanWaxman Před 6 lety

      I’m looking to out fit a 10wt I have as a pike rig for the lake,would the 330 be a good fit. I fish from a paddle board in the flats where the is also a deep drop. The flats are easily five to 10 feet deep. Any suggestion is much appreciated I figure it’s $100 bucks either way. My local shop doesn’t carry any heavy stuff so I just assume order one of yours. Thanks.

    • @TheSlideinn
      @TheSlideinn  Před 6 lety

      The 330 grain would be a little light for the 10 wt. I would probably look at at something like the Airflo Depthfinder in a 400 grain if you want to go deep or the WF 10 Rio In-Touch Pike/Musky line in either the Intermediate or 1.5/6 IPS model

    This is one of the best flies I have ever used and it came from a source I don't remember. The Bow River Bugger does not come from this pattern. Typically it comes in with a brass bullet head with very close trimmed deer hair . I have also found it tied for lack of weight. Of course there was a number of patterns because no other river exists on the face of the earth except the Bow River! 🤔🥷😂🤣
    Bob Clouser was doing a demonstration on tying the Clouser minnow. So this upstart comes pushing his way into the group. He snorted and said "that's not how I was shown!" !!!!! 🤔🧘🫣🤷. When he stomped away the group was laughing. Sometimes we lose information because the observers have to be told.
