It took me over a year of moving speakers then moving them again (and again) until I finally achieved a good balance of my 7.2.4 system in my 13' x 14' living room. My sound system consists of 4 SVS Ultra Bookshelf speakers (2 for the mains and 2 for the side channels), an SVS Ultra Center speaker, 6 SVS Prime Elevation speakers (4 ceiling mounted for Dolby Atmos and 2 mounted on the back wall for the rear channels) and 2 SVS SB-3000 Subwoofers. The system is powered by a Yamaha Aventage RX-A8A 11 channel AVR connected to a Panamax M5400-PM Power Conditioner.

I have a similar size room, do you think 7 main channels is too much? Also wondering how much space you have behind you for the rears and whether they’re placed as wide as your front stage or narrower. Thanks!

It all depends on the room, equipment you use, etc. For instance, id much rather go for a high end 5.1 system vs an average to low end 7.2 system. A few years back, i opted to buy a $1500 center channel instead of adding to my 5.1 system to make it 7.2 or more...but everytime i watch a movie in the basement, i am loving the sound.

most tv/movie is in DD+ 6 channel anyway
so i guess even if you have 7.1 system that airplane gonna sound weird af
it wont be a smooth fly by, the sound is gonna appear at 2 spots as the AVR does the upmixing from 6 channel to 8 channel

Haha, your comments remind me of this seller I saw on FB marketplace "selling SVS SUB 1200 because wife said it was too bulky and got a soundbar" .. Very lucky you can still keep your stuff in your room! My bedroom is a lot smaller than your living room, so glad you mentioned that I can use 5 ground speakers

All the way back to the LSIMS! I ended up using the LSIM 702 as back surrounds . Their side firing quality made them better as backs in my room. I like 7.2.4 for my setup.

I think with 5 base channels in certain situations it’s easier to place a sound coming off your surround compared to 7. With the latter sounds often are mixed either between Front and Surround or Surround and Back. With only surrounds it will come off often only from surround. As long as they are not near you though then it won’t be a big issue. I have rears just behind me - near field wide dispersion speakers - KEF LS50 meta - and they mix with side surrounds perfectly helping them disappear whilst, when sitting between them, never revealing their position despite closeness.
In other words if I had bigger distance to surrounds and close to back wall I would go with 5.1.4 - with surrounds close, back speakers actually help - but you need near field one if they are close

Going up extra 2 channels gets exponentially expensive unless you can get really lucky with used/2nd hand AVRs. I got lucky that my 9ch avr was only 600 compared to my 7ch that was 400. I don’t see myself ever justifying the difference to go up to 13ch because I now have a complete sound dome and won’t be missing anything from the extra 2 back channels because my AVR recreates them virtually with the main surrounds. I’ve tried 7 bed layers a few times, and I think it’s only useful if you have multiple rows of seating, which I don’t have. Having an extra pair of heights in the back is a MUCH better use of the extra amps.

Nice one, thanks, you know I'm still contemplating changing out my 7.2 set up to 5.2.2 just can't decide on best budget wall mounted heights to match my remaining 2x pairs of wharfedale Diamond 9.5 towers & 9CS.

This is great information. I’d probably stick with a 5.1.4. Just because I can’t see adding two more surround speakers. But that could change.

I have 5.2.4 and i think for most living room home theaters its perfect. I'll also have to mantion that i heard that the guy invented auro 3d said the format shouldn't be for 7.1 because human beings don't hear from the back of the haed.... But they've pushed him to adjust the format because people like more speakers. More is not always better as you just mentioned in your video!

Humans do hear from the rear I think 😬... 🤔 it's just at a lower amplitude and less accurate than forward firing sounds, but you can give a few dB lift after calibration is done to your rear channels to compensate ... I personally lift my rears by 3 dB and sides at 1 dB...Well that's my thinking anyways 😕

    • @doublet147
      @doublet147 Před 10 měsíci

That's funny. Everyone obviously hears audio behind them. Proper calibration fixes any weaknesses in rear audio perception.

It dawns on my that i have everything i need to run 5.2 audio, but no processor. My fear is that processor wont sound anywhere close to my stereo system quality and my 2.1 setup is already crazy immersive and soundstagey. I'll probably never do it.

7.1 will ALWAYS be better than a 5.1 IF you have the space for proper seperation of your side surrounds & rears. It is 100% dependent on your room AND (more importantly) the channel seperation available to your seating position.

I hear a big difference with 7.2.4 v 5.2.4. More immersion. I will not go back to 5 channels. Not a huge fan of the bleeding of surround to only the side channels. 7 channels has actual separation.

I went from 5.1 and kept going. My last theater was a dedicated theater room that was treated and professionally calibrated. There's definitely a difference, but it's not mind-blowing. The main reason is that most movies don't utilize it, and even the ones that do it simply for a slightly more immersive experience. All that being said, my next theater will have more 😂.
