- Hollywood Story is a 1951 American film noir crime film directed by William Castle starring Richard Conte and Julie Adams.
The film was an attempt by Universal Pictures to take advantage of the success of Paramount's Sunset Boulevard which was released the previous year. The plot is based on the notorious murder of silent movie director William Desmond Taylor.
While Hollywood Story reaches a fictional conclusion, it follows the circumstances of the real-life event closely.
Upon the release of the film, Universal promoted the appearance of several once famous silent screen celebrities. It came to light that the ones with speaking parts had received just $55 per day of shooting for their roles. Others, like Elmo Lincoln, the first screen Tarzan, were used as non-speaking extras and received only $15 per day.

Richard Conte was the reason I watched in the first place. I doubt the 3 people that gave thumbs down 👎, even know who he was.
That's the most normal and avg I've ever seen Richard Conte.
Liked him in "The Blue Gardenia".Always thought he was underrated as an actor.

Too bad he comes off as a WEASEL in most roles, but I guess they are necessary to thicken the plot? There HAS to be a bad guy...
I was born in Los Angeles in 1943. It is such a treat to see great movies made at a time and place I enjoyed as a youngster. Scenes inside and outside the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel, were the first academy awards were held, and where enjoyed the best Dorsey High reunion in 2005 beside the olympic-sized swimming pool where I swam a few hundred yards, and relished the company of classmates Dennis Luftig and a couple others.
Is los Angeles better now?
What three dopes gave thumbs down on a clean, crisp print of a well acted and thoroughly enjoyable flick? Geez! Thanks Chris for posting this movie. I worked on set with Richard Egan years ago. Don't remember if it was a movie or TV show. Boy, was he handsome. Even nicer looking in person. He had real dark, tanned skin, bright blue eyes and a great smile. Lotsa teeth.
Lucky you. He seemed a little weak in this role: kept an uncomfortable looking smiling snicker on his gorgeous face. - And yes, he was gorgeous and immensely talented - more so after early films like this. Could act the pants off of Conte, who always played everything the same.
Was this movie known as "The Los Angeles Story " ?

Hi WCG! I've only been down your way a few times in my life, but I've done a LOT of Googling about LA/Hollywood, starting with the OJ FAKE murders, The Black Dahlia, Laurel Canyon, Manson fiASScos, Bill Holden murder, etc. I'm also related to Johnny Weissmuller, so I've researched him as well! There's DEF no shortage of entertaining real-life material coming outta Tinsel Town...
The acting schools should refer to these 1950's movies for students. These folks could carry a picture without crazy effects and gadgets. The costuming, was great and the story lines are believable as well.
And the cars! Ewe, what death traps they were.
And they were capable of clean language unlike the heathens of today!

Every day more and more I get the feeling that the person behind this channel is a connoisseur of American films. Someone not young, if I may say so. The pieces of motion pictures of this channel are definitely rare and of high quality, the meticulous “selection” is evident.

What a great movie! Great story, characters, lots of great lines, beautiful shots, the sort of meta-presentation tribute to hollywood, in the shroud of a classic whodunnit…genius! had a big smile on my face throughout.

So many wonderful old films that I've never seen or heard of, like this one. I won't pay for dish or cable, and my digital over-air reception has been unreliable for more than a year. So much variety, plus these old classics here, have really filled the void!
I hear yah sunbeam! I enjoy the many B&W B movies myself! With imdb to research all these old-time actors, it's a gas going back in time to the 40s-60s!
The detective who investigated the Taylor murder was 100 years old in 1986 and remembered the scene well.
Ditto about the "Smith" murder! I'm SURE you don't need any more info right?
A noir film lighted like a comedy, but useful in giving us a look at long-gone performers in their prime.

Thank you. This seems to be a B picture made with A list talent. Richard Conte was an actor of reliable excellence, I always had a crush on Julia Adams, and Fred Clark never really got all the recognition he deserved.
I always preferred Conte in 'sincere' good guy roles instead of playing the gangsters he got stuck with from early on.
Fred Clark was a co-star of the early TV incarnation of the Burns & Allen Show, as well as starring in a series of Ken-L Raton dog food commercials ... as the dog's owner, not as the dog.
It was thrilling just to watch a clean print! The movie captured my interest. I liked seeing the silent era actors.

By this time he had been film films 40 years (I checked his first film credit, 1911).
I like it!..34.05 " how do you know all this?"....."That's what they pay me for, to know all this".

Most films today, especially action, are just sort of m silent films. You can turn off the sound and follow them with no problem. The dialogs are so simplistic.
I agree so very much, The writers could write and actors could act. They really earned their Oscars. I grew up in Los Angele and I love seeing old downtown L.A.
actors gave outstanding performances while keeping their clothes on, and without the use of vulgar language in the script. This proves one does not need to be undressed to show true HOLLYWOOD talent : )

Didn't think I was going to like this movie but as usual the presence of Richard Conte and his way of speaking held my attention throughout. Loved Jim Baccus telling the story.

What a Great story.Richard Conte acted brilliantly. He was not only class actor in a leading role but in a negative role too. And Julie Adams was so beautiful. Great mystery story which kept me guessing till the end.

What a good movie, combining old Hollywood with the new (back then). Conte is always smooth as silk and Egan had a face that should have been in more films. It's a finely made film with romance, intrigue and murder- how many of us knew what the medallion was that Collier took? TY Chris!
The last 30 seconds of the movie, Jim Baccus narrator character said, "Somebody had to give he bride away." meaning he would do it. Why didn't the Sally's father give the bride away?
Anyway, good movie. You can't hardly go wrong with Richard Conte.
They'd kept his marriage to her mother (and his paternity) a secret for so long - but with the Ferrara murder solved, couldn't they just be open about it all now?

The opening scene where the old guy is giving them a tour of the old film production
studio reminded me of a B&W episode of " Dragnet " called " The Big Producer ".
It was the one about an old silent film producer who gave Sgt. Friday and his partner a tour
of the old studio he had worked on in the days of silent films.
I think they may have used the old Charlie Chaplin studios on La Brea for that scene, but I'm not sure.

During a retrospective devoted to William Castle, where I saw everything that was showed there.
Bonjour Serge. j'ai habite Paris pendant 20 ans et la cinematheque a toujours occupe une place a part dans mes loisirs ainsi que celle de Toulouse durant mes jeunes annees. le film noir a ete toujours pour mois une recherche sans fin et je pense toujours beucoup de temps a essayer d'en visionner le plus grand nombre. Bonne continuation.

De mon côté, j'ai été très fan de Waterloo Bridge, puis Laura et je dirais que régulièrement, je suis toujours très touché par The Crowd de King Vidor. Interesting, sanitized and fictionalized take on the William Desmond Taylor murder. Interesting how they took some of the popular narrative of the case. Interesting also seeing the silent actors and actresses too. In 1951 there were still many in Hollywood that not only remembered the crime but probably knew the facts and who actually killed the director.
Nice cozy engaging little picture..kinda like a Perry Mason or a 50s Dragnet..draws you in from the get go..

Supposedly based on the 1922 murder of William Desmond Taylor -- but apparently only loosely. They set the murder in 1929; plus Taylor (on whom 'Franklin Ferrara' was supposedly based) had nothing to do with Lon Chaney's 'Phantom of the Opera' silent film.
Love Hollywood on Hollywood movies...and the Joel McCrea cameo at 50:00.
