    I picked up a 5800X3D a few weeks ago as an upgrade from a 3600.
    It’s a huge gaming upgrade. Im lucky that I have a 3090 to unleash, but there are a lot of quality of life things the 5800X3D helps with, such as loading times and general performance in most apps.

    • @StefanHolmes
      @StefanHolmes Před rokem +2

      @Liam Miller depending which monitor I use, 3840x2560 or 2560x1600. I don’t have any high refresh displays, but I tend to put a cap at 125FPS because that’s achievable by many of the games I play and it matches my G305 mouse pilling rate.
      Cyberpunk 2077 obviously doesn’t reach high FPS with all the quality options, but Doom Eternal does even at 3840x2560.
      One major upgrade was Control. That now rarely dips below 60FPS at native 2560x1600 without DLSS.

      @@liammiller3688 definitely depends on the game/genre/engine/api. If youre chasing every AAA title youre going to have to step up to a whole platform/faster ram/clocks on newer cpu/chipsets. To me the cost aspect of that "jump" is almost equal to selling your 3090 down the road for a newer GPU for your high resolution needs since its not so cpu dependent. IMO thats a more cost effective approach, up until theres "leaps" on the cpu/ram/chipset end for that format/resolution that proves otherwise in the future. As others stated in async/vulkan or titles like doom frame caps are more ideal anyways or adaptive sync/perfomance aspects for image uniformity/clarity at 4k that would be my main concern. As someone with 4k build intents, or racing sim/Vr potentially. Which has its own cpu aspects i guess. DLSS3 though "simulated" frames do seem like a concept if youve ever leveraged frame buffer/raised cap in BFV as an example.

      @anhiirr Před rokem +1

      @@ThePalePatriot u may see some improvements depending on the game/engine/genre. Nothing super substantial. But you can yt some benchmarks with that cpu and GPU combo and compare it to yours. Or you can dl 3dmarks free version to test your system/score and benchmark a few games to see if the uploads offer you any data to cross examine. IMO if upgrading eventually to a newer GPU. The X3D on that board platform will typically be your best gaming option

      Man i did the exact same swap.. I cant discribe it but the smoothness is on a different level. Even in games where I dont get much more FPS than with the 5900x everything just feels smoother. I dont know why though.. maybe because of the 2 CCDs and possible latency issues on the 5900x? maybe the 90 mb cache for only one CCD makes the difference?! All i can say for shure is that the frametimes and 1% lows are much better.

    I upgraded from a 5800X to a X3D with my extremely overclocked 6800XT(waterblocked, liquid metaled, EVC2SE overvolted max frequency) and in games like MWIII2023 I went from 170-215 fps to 230-350fps
    in most games my old high is my current low and the new highs are much higher.
    in the few games that gain no upper fps, they stabilize the lower framerates, makes everything smoother.

      il miglioramento sugli fps è stato del 15-30% a seconda del gioco.
      ma ciò che è veramente cambiato e ne ha fatto valere davvero la pena è stato il 50-90% che ho ottenuto sui minimi dell'1%.
      Fondamentalmente tutti i giochi sono stati molto più fluidi, la rimozione di qualsiasi microstuttering ha fatto sì che ogni gioco sembrasse funzionare alla grande.

    What i love about this cpu is that it can run perfectly fine on my cheap b550 asrock mobo i got for 120eur
    I can keep my ram and play for another few years without doing a whole new platform change
    Started with a x470 gigabyte aorus mobo(got it used for 70eur) and a ryzen 3 1200 for my basic pc. It provided playable framerates with my then current rtx 2070. Whole system was an open waterloop 2x360mm rads
    Later bought a ryzen 5 3600X for 180eur for my 144hz 1080p monitor to provide the needed framerates
    2 yrs ago i swapped to a B550itx board for a small build and upgraded to a RX6900XT. Same ryzen 3600X now coupled with a fresh gpu, both liquid cooled
    New strat would be to get a good deal on a 5800X3D. That's a 5yr run on the same platform, same storage, ram etc. Only cpu and gpu changes.

      Not sure how much PCI-e 3 is holding back cards that are meant for PCI-e 4, so It might not be worth investing in a better card until I have the right PCI-e slotted mainboard to support it to the fullest.

Channels like Linus/hardwareunboxed / etc seem to exclusively test with 6950 XT/4090s which I suspect most of your audience including myself with my 4070 TI do not have.
    On one hand I get not wanting a GPU bottleneck but on the other hand it doesn't really show what the average consumer will experience but rather the best case scenario for a CPU

    • @wolfwilkopter2231
      @wolfwilkopter2231 Před rokem

      But it showcases, what the CPU can really do, IF its not GPU Co...erm Clockblocked. ;)
      Still a 4070Ti is a very powerful card, which exceeds the entire 3000series in performance in FHD and trades blows with the 3090Ti in QHD.
      That will benefit greatly from a 5800X3D in many titles, if you're not playing exclusivly on UHD, which limits every card in the end, even 4090s.
      But on something like the "new FHD" better known as QHD, the 5800X3D with a 4070Ti makes a very powerful combo, that it some games will r*pe the crap out of most CPUs but the newest and best.
      In general:
      Depends on your game.
      In some, if not many, you wont see a big average FPS increase, if any at all, but you will see increased low FPS and more stable and smooth frametimes and sometimes even shorter loadtimes and co.
      In some Games like ACC or iRacing for example, having a 5800X3D put in, literally unleashes Hell, even with something like a 4070Ti!
      Some games literally get held back by their CPUs or the lack of Cache on them.
      Or for Example in SotTR: my old 3700X (on a X570Aorus Pro with 32Gigs of DDR4 3600CL16) in combo with an RTX3080 Aorus Master 12GB @ QHD with RT enabled, ran pretty much entirely in CPU Limit, switching DLSS 2 Quality Mode on, reduced the CPU Limit to about 70%, with CPU Game fps beeing: 93min and 192max and average game fps 123.
      Switching gears to the 5800X3D, with the rest and the settings staying the same: CPU game 167min 414 max literally adding about 2/3rds to the min and more than doubling the max!
      While on top of that, adding an average game FPS increase to 139fps and the game suddenly becoming entirely GPU bound. 🤑
      And when you go to online games, like WoW, ESO, SWTOR, STO..., you can also see vast increases in stability, especially in crowded areas and much less framedrops...with the games becoming much smoother to play.

      @@wolfwilkopter2231 I know it's not quite the same thing, but I don't find my 3900X to be the bottleneck in most gaming at 1440p or 4k using a 7900XT; it really comes down to the type of games you are playing and the resolution. for me it would be a sidegrade, and it just makes more sense to hold that cash back to put into a proper platform upgrade.

    • @wolfwilkopter2231
      @wolfwilkopter2231 Před rokem +1

      @@spacechannelfiver
      Its not a bad CPU per se.
      The Problem is, that the 3900X has cores, but lacks the performance and clock increases, the 5000series has.
      And the other Problem is, that there are pretty much NO Games, that can handle more than 8Cores well, if at all.
      Also the 3900X might have already 64MB Cache, but that one gets shared between the 2 CCXs.
      It may sound ilogical or a sidegrade, but upgrading the 3900X to a 5800X3D, would give you a Boost of about 15-20% in Raw Performance, as this is what its 5000er Advantage is.
      And the main thing is, the L3 Cache sits on the one CCX and runs in FULL SPEED.
      So depending o the games you play, as you say it, you may not see much improvement if at all, but even in UHD this could lead to an increase in some or atleast a smoothing out.
      Still you're right tho with the 7900XT, you're mostly GPU Limited anyways as its slightly slower than a 4080 and UHD very demanding, so there would'nt be much of an improvement, other than in 1% los and frametimes for the most part.
      So yeah with that i'd suggest to go AM5 instead of 'sidegrading'
      If i may: Hardware Unboxed has some really good comparisons with the 5800X3D vs. others and newer available, you may find them very interesting and enlightening.

    Great video. 👍And heads up. It's less "an error" from your side, but just shows the unprecedented performance range gear can offer these days, once you step above a performance level that exceeds "bare necessity level". And unintentionally, but gladly, you even showed another intersting thing i missed on other channels: If you look close on the Ryzen 3800XT - even that profits from a 3070 -> 6900 XT swap - and is on perfectly enjoyable performance levels. With either gfx card. Cool, because:
    Gone are the times where you were literally forced to upgrade every 1-2 years, or overclock the bat-sh*t out of stuff, to stay above the "barely enjoyable" level, and be exited to get 5 FPS more, to be finally >60 FPS. "Can it run Crisis?" 😅
    Because: fast forward another year - guess what a 5800X3D can do, paired with a 4090 (and not a "slow" in comparison 6900XT)?
    Yep, add the gains from your og review to these results - another time on top of it.
    Best combo i ever bought. Seriously. Since 40+ years of fiddling with PCs.
    Framecap / g-sync it to your display (144 & 165 in my case) - and enjoy it never dipping below "buttery smooth" in any setting or resolution PLUS enjoy less power consumption than my GTX1070 from yester-yester-year in anything but the most demanding titles.
    The 5800X3D is strong enough to actually tickle & drive the 4090 to reasonably high % of usage (and thereby is actually, noticeable, a lot real world faster than slower cards like 4080, 7900 etc.).
    And at the same time, the 4090 is far from maxed out by even a 14900k or a 7800X3D.
    Which means: I can enjoy years of blistering performance in any game or application, even those not even published yet, with high/ultra settings/real nice eye candy, on a super-mature, stable and troublefree AM4 platform. With an awesome 64GB 3600 ddr4 kit, multiple NVMEs... ample reserves in any respect.
    So not missing anything, while easily waiting for AM5 to mature, likewise Intel to come up with some new trick. My Strix 4090 oc (and it's 600w power limit) can & will still profit from a 15/16900K or 8800X3D or Zen6 - likewise vice versa a 5090 or better - in case i feel the urge to get it.
    So in a nutshell: the 5800X3D, now even well below 300€/USD, is even worth to be considered a good choice for a new build now. It can power any gfx card your wallet can afford, while needing well below 100W when gaming. No matter if AMD, Intel or Nvidia - awesome what they offer, awesome choices&combos possible for any wallet size - great times these are. 👍

      PBO Tuner 2 should help you here, its just a littly piece of Software thats aimed at just that, undervolting the CPU.
      Set it to a -30mV Curve or better if your unit can handle it, and you will have permanently higher or the highest boost clocks and the chip will run a little cooler.
      To test temps in worst case: Prime 95 max heat test, nothing beats that, no not even Cinebench.
      With undervolting applied, mx 5800X3D under a PL360Flux 30th AE AiO doesnt get over 80°C in Prime while sitting on top of my H500M above a 400watts GPU,

In case of the X3D Chips that can make a difference, because besides the larger cache they also have lower clockspeeds. The ideal way to eliminate GPU Bottlenecks would be a custom resolution of 16x9 pixels. You should choose the highest possible detail settings and the lowest possible resolution with a 16:9 aspect ratio. I have been using custom resolutions for this occassionally. Only changing the field of view (for example by changing the ar) has an impact on the CPU.

    AM5 is just too expensive rn as gaming isn’t my only hobby, so hopefully it’s a good upgrade for possibly even longer. I play a lot of games like Arma, Total War, Paradox Games mostly Heart of Iron, Bannerlord, Stalker GAMMA modpack, all which have a lot going on with NPC counts or are CPU focused, so that thought is helping me deal with this crippling anxiety I get every time I upgrade.

    I just bought a 5800X3D for $263 total and will likely be selling a 5900X and installing it for $260 into a friends prebuilt with a 3900x currently. He does productivity tasks like music creation so it's a good deal for both of us. I only rock a 6900XT at darn near 4k resolution (5120x1440p @240hz) and I cap my frames to 238fps to always stay within the monitors freesync range. I just enabled curve optimizer and first tried negative all core -10 but then tested -15 and I get almost max boost on all cores during C23 multicore test. My score went up by around 600 points as well. I don't want to push it on voltage reduction as generally starving electronics of voltage isn't a great idea because it then stresses them as they pull more amps to compensate. So I'm thinking -15 is as far as I want to push it.
