These lists exist to go viral. That’s all. It has nothing to do with music taste. If Apple Music had said this was a Top 100 list of the most streamed albums on the platform, this wouldn’t be a topic of discussion for longer than a few hours MAX.
People know that, but they get attention as well from talking about it
Look, the thing with the publications and services like Apple Music is they don't necessarily picking the best albums (even though they call it 100 best lmao). It's a bit of a diversity and popularity contest, like "look we give our flowers to this highly acclaimed album and then we give a spot to this Bad Bunny album because it broke the charts". What they do doesn't make sense, but i don't think they genuinely consider ALL the albums they included to be the best of the best
True, and I wish more people making videos about this list had this take. Hivemind did mention this and had a great take that I’m sure there was some behind the scenes stuff and strategy with putting Miseducation #1. But where they lose me is they’re just not consistent. If you’re gonna try to blend quality with the “popularity contest”, then own it- don’t include freaking Usher’s Confessions and not The Weeknd. Or have absolutely no country except Kasey Musgraves when country DOMINATED the 90s and held its own in the 2000-10s. And classic country? Nothing here at all. Also they’re bad at playing “pick the popular kid in gym class” cuz NOBODY has liked seeing Bad Bunny as the only entry for world music…

All these things are plagued by the fact that time goes by and people forget about music, most of this stuff is seen as great because of modern hype, Travis Scott isn't staying around sorry. Only a few artists survive. Music from the 1900s to 2000s and above should all be included, but if you look into those times most artists are forgotten about. Most of your favourite bullshit industry rappers will be gone, out, not spoken of, no halls for them no big accolades, nothing to learn from, just irrelevant.

Weeknd snubbed overall. HOB is the right choice, but even playing to the numbers and influence, After Hours being overlooked in favor of Usher’s Confessions (which I love btw) or Rihanna’s Anti? Crazy.

that album imo is pretty amazing. that being said, yeah i don't agree with it being over MANY of the albums it is on this list. though thats what happens when you make a top 100 anything, by the end it just isn't gonna make much sense in a lot of aspects.
I honestly would put it above Ready to Die lol, super inventive songwriting, well composed, good vocals, etc

Not a rap take but I cannot see a world in which you try to create any semblance of a “representative” list of musical history and not include ‘In The Court of The Crimson King’. It cannot be understated what that release did for music let alone rock and the plethora of other genres KC went on to spawn.
This is a personal opinion, but I feel like there were too many hip hop albums on this list. It’s a genre that’s been around for less time than any other major genre and it has the most spots on the list? I would say 12-15, but 21 is a little much.

Back to Black to this day is the only album I've listened to that has 0 skips for me, even all 19 songs on the deluxe version. Was pleasantly surprised to see it deservedly make the top 10

Jazz, soul, funk hugely missed out because of insane recency bias. Should have had more miles, herbie, weather report, monk, Washington, Quincy, Armstrong, benson, parliament/funkadelic and brother no James brown is crazy. And then no Sinatra greatest singer of 20th century. Imo they missed heavily, large recency bias and missed out some for the best, most important and influential albums of all time when the list was greatest 100 of all time. Also for some reason they were inconsistent with the repeats like Stevie, Radiohead, prince and a select few had repeated albums but others weren’t allowed it? No off the wall is wild aswell. Overall disappointment

I don’t really think it’s that insane. There is always going to be a bias for bigger names of the past. In 25 years when they remake this 30 plus hip hop albums will be on that list because our age group is debating it. There are some obvious misses, but a lot of these are generational albums to most people.

They clearly had this rule of one album per artist but then broke that with some legendary artists (The Beatles, Prince, Bob Dylan). I agree they should have included two by Kendrick. But when you look at the big picture they did well with the rap albums.
Now metal, jazz and punk fans truly had it bad. But we are used to getting ignored by the mainstream culture.

Beyonce wouldn't make it on my list for sure but it's still a nit pick and not seeing the bigger picture and how some genres got completely sidelined.

I'm happy with the placement of the Hip-Hop albums. While stuff like Death Certificate, Madvillany, TPAB, Only Bulit 4 Cuban Linx and 2001 should've made the cut. That's 5 spots that they need to fill with Hip-Hop and I don't really think they where trying to do that. Every great (And well Known) MC was on this list for the most part. Also, If Michael Jackson didn't make the list twice with Off The Wall. and ELVIS didn't even make the list at all. I'm perfectly fine with the Hip-Hop placements.
I feel like they could have taken some hip hop albums out and put those other ones in. Like grodt isn't better than TPAB, Take Care is not better than Madvillainy. The Blueprint is NOT better than Midnight Marauders. Replace those albums with the better ones.

Should never have any album that did not include actual musicians playing actual instruments. It's amazing how many hip hop artists sample songs by great musicians.

GMKC was a certified hood classic, amazing. But TPAB was something else, an experience.

If they were trying to include modern picks from artists that were popular but also helped move their genres forward then having no Weeknd on the list is disgraceful, especially if you're gonna put Blonde at 5 (Not saying Blonde is worse than Trilogy, just mentioning it cuz they're both alt R&B).
you guys are lucky as rap fans you got plenty of albums here. There where 2 jazz albums on the whole thing. Its just an impossible task to do a top 100 albums especially when your only including only commercial albums
There will never be a universally agreed upon list because everyone has different tastes. No matter who would top this this, a lot of people will disagree. So it really doesn't matter. It's really just to create discussion, honestly.

@@ANKURRAJSHARMA 3500 goes on for longer than it should, the static noise in the first half of 90210 is distracting, and Antidote is boring up until the third verse. None of them are BAD songs (except maybe Antidote) but I don’t think they deserve the overwhelming praise they get. ASTROWORLD is much more polished and no note is wasted, even on its longest tracks.

Rodeo is the most Travis Scott record in his entire catalogue ( the cudi/kanye protege trav ) , a record made off the scraps from kanye and cudis studios.
