  • We're tackling a completely new project in this video series that will test our craftsmanship, fabrication, and customization skills....and I COULDN'T BE MORE EXCITED! This first part is all about getting the platform set. We first have to piece together the massive 27' long by 27" diameter pontoons, including a customized center pontoon with transom. Then we're installing CCA treated plywood and Extreme Duty vinyl from Pontoon Stuff (use my link and coupon code if you shop there!). In the coming episodes my welding and fabrication skills will be put to the test building custom railings, a wheelhouse, and more. Subscribe to see the next parts!

    My favourite kind of construction: not super-complicated but accurate and thorough, with quality materials.

      @tomspontoons  Před rokem +1

      Exactly. This boat won’t look overly complicated, but it will be sturdy, built properly, and will function great for years and years of use!

    I enjoy the vibe of this well done video. It’s always informative and we can take something away, but there is also the character of your business, family oriented. Glad your videos are reaching beyond the borders of Michigan and generating business for you and your family! Look forward to following this buildout.
    Teamwork makes the dream work!

      Thank you so much for the kind words! That means a lot to me. We just set out to work on pontoon boats to provide people with great spaces to create opportunities to gather on the water with friends and family. It doesn’t get better than that.
      The other projects we get to take on in addition, like this barge build, are exciting because of the way my brain is wired and the love I have for designing and developing things to solve problems or make experiences better.
      Really, I just appreciate you watching and that you’re enjoying our channel!!

      They loaded some serious stuff on this barge their first year in business this summer! It’s a massive boat built to hold tons of weight

      @@tomspontoons, my thought from day one of my planning has been to build it strong and not have to worry about it later.
      I’ve watched your houseboat build and I have to say I prefer the video format you using now cuz there’s a LOT more info. Thanks!

      @@luisaraujo4708 I’ll take any feedback I can get for the channel!! The houseboat series was less instructional, more just for entertainment. We try to do both, but obviously we’re aimed more at How-To stuff to help DIY folks at home with their boat projects

    Useful, easy-to-follow video. Did you do anything to seal the bottom of the plywood before putting it on the boat? If not, why not?

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thank you for the kind words. We never seal the wood we install because it’s already CCA treated. We want it to breathe and dry after getting wet so that it will last as long as possible. Sealing might be necessary on untreated wood, but it will increase chance of rot if you seal treated wood and trap moisture in it.

    • @_onesimpleidea
      @_onesimpleidea Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@tomspontoons I wondered if it was more practical to try to prevent moisture getting in, or to allow it in and then allow it to dry. Answers that. A part of me still wishes there were a way to prevent it from ever absorbing moisture at all. Likely only achievable with different flooring material (HDPE, etc). Thanks for the informative reply.

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@_onesimpleidea Glad to clear some stuff up for you. I soaked marine grade treated and untreated for 30 days in an experiment (there are videos about it on my channel) and to be honest neither one really absorbed and held onto much water...definitely not water logged, but the untreated started to get moldy very quickly. I think it's more about the flooring on top of the wood and how it's protected. Most vinyl products are water resistant or even water proof meaning you won't get the wet sitting on the plywood like carpeted boats. If the boat is carpeted it needs to be fully dry before being covered, otherwise the carpet just stays wet and so does the plywood underneath.
      There are boats build with composite decks (Coosa Board) and aluminum decks. The issue there is that the flooring will wear out at some point, and the process to strip the composite or aluminum deck back to bare and clean enough to glue new flooring down takes more time and effort than just replacing plywood. For instance, I end up charging the same amount to refloor an aluminum decked boat because of the HOURS that go into cleaning the aluminum, and then the far more complicated adhesive process. The CCA Treated Marine Grade Plywood is rated to last 20-30 years. I think tearing a boat down to the bare aluminum every 20 years isn't so bad!! That's my $0.02 on the topic anyhow.

    Tom, have you built any pontoons with tan woven flooring and gray furniture? That’s what my family wants but I’m worried it won’t look right.

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  Před rokem

      I have not. I am with you on the colors clashing. The tan flooring options with ivory or beige seats looks so good, and the gray flooring with gray seats looks good too. It might be great, but it might clash too! Sorry I can’t provide an example!

    Is this going to be a forkbarge or just a transport barge? And if it were a forkbarge would it have to be built different structurally?

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  Před rokem +1

      This is simply a transport barge. I don’t see us ever getting into fork barge builds, but I would definitely weld in extra framing for a fork system anchor point if going that route to be safe. This has tons of deck support for weight, but the fork leverage would likely add a completely different torque. Great question!!

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  Před rokem +1

      Those were purchased through an Alro Metals retail outlet. I special ordered them cut to length. Otherwise check with Rescued Metals out of Kalamazoo as they get surplus metals in and sell them cheap.

      @@tomspontoons I've binged watched a bunch of your videos, what did you say about spacing the outer toons apart for 8' 6" deck. I can't find it again. The centers of the outer toons are 78" apart?

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  Před rokem +1

      @@MolsonB I don’t think there’s really a standard design for that. I’ve seen the big manufactured boats where they use the same toon and crossmember layout for their 8’ and 8.5’ wide boats…making a ton of plywood overhang. Generally, it seems that most boats end up lining the edges of the plywood up with the outside of the pontoons. From there the crossmembers are positioned to allow for that to happen. Hope this helps!
