@Loud McLeod Hi I uploaded the updates in the description box of the video. Here is the most recent one with results. Onion is a biennial plant and regrowing scraps most likely won’t grow another full size bulb, although other people say they have grown full size ones. From my own experience, they all grew small bulbs and eventually flowered and produced seeds, which is a great way to get free seeds and makes an interesting experiment. Here is the link from last summer: czcams.com/video/hz6JnREkEV4/video.html
      Thanks for watching, Misilla

I know this video is old, but here's a little tip I learned from my grandma.
When moving a plant into a proper pot after germinating it in water - gradually mix soil into the water overtime instead of just pulling it out of the water and planting it directly in the soil.
The plant needs time to adjust, so letting it do so slowly by adding the soil little by little until it's mostly dirt, is gonna lessen the risk of killing it
I'm not sure if onions care too much since they're a pretty hardy plant, but if your water-germinated onions die when you replant them into soil, it might be because of shock from sudden change! Hope this helps!!

I once had a store-bought onion that I neglected to eat in time. It sprouted in the refrigerator.
I peeled it apart, like you did, and was able to plant 6 sprouts in the garden. Every one of them developed into a full-sized onion. Luckily, my neglect paid off! I'm currently re-sprouting the base of a leek that I grew in last year's garden, like you did with the onion. Nice to see something growing in the winter, even if it's just on the kitchen counter.

I plant grocery store green onion (scallion) tips directly into the garden several times last year and after about three weeks, there are green stems to harvest. I left the root tip in the soil and kept harvesting the green stems and those onions actually multiplied. I did not even root them in water first. just pushed them into the so bit. This year I will try some big onions too! Fun!

Same. We grow tomatoes, hot peppers, onions, garlic and mint and other herbs on our little balcony with my daughter. And we will be trying strawberries this year. It teaches the little ones so much... about work, patience and how nature works. A lot of the youngster don't appreciate delayed gratification, they want everything NOW. Growing things teaches people to wait.

I agree, alot was lost with that pre-WWI generation. My great grandmother used to make her own mozarella and grow her own tomatoes and herbs. Not one of her kids (WWII generation) passed it on. Everything with that group was store bought. My grandfather (Korean War) tried growing some stuff, but it didn't work out in the Florida elements the way it did for him up north. Now, I am the new reincarnation of the past.

I found it about a month after putting it in there and it was growing roots.
Today, it has a large network of roots. I have never opened the container, but the onion itself has given off enough water to keep it alive. The onion itself isn't even rotting yet.

I was able to regrow several onions by cutting the bottom 1/4 in half, letting it root in a shallow bowl of water,, then planting in water retaining clay soil until ready to harvest. They were Hymalayan sweets and grew quite large. Also they hadn't sprouted yet and a few grew a smaller bulb attached. Thanks for lots of good information.

Thank you, it's a very useful tip! I don't know if you know about another useful thing with regard to onions, which I discovered by accident. That is to make a potent, very nutritious liquid plant feed from the water that you used to rinse an onion with.
During a time of severe water restrictions my family and I began to collect waste water to use it for the garden. We put a small plastic tub in the sink and transferred water from that into plastic buckets. We also rinsed onions under the tap before chopping it up. In this way the little bit of moisture at the cut ends ("onion juice") ended up in the buckets, mixed with the water we used to rinse the onions. After a while we noticed that if the water in the buckets were left to stand for a while, it became more and more smelly.
Natural sciences are not my strong suit, but somewhere I read that fresh onion tends to attract microbes or bacteria from the surrounding environment. It certainly seems that something mysterious happened when we left water that had even a little bit of onion juice in it standing overnight. The water became more and more smelly and cloudy, and plants thrived on it, they were so clearly revitalized.
Since then we've been using it regularly, since we eat onions with practically every meal. At the moment we are considering utilizing it on a larger scale so that more plants could benefit.
It helps that we've never cleaned the buckets -- it creates the ideal "breeding" environment for the onion water microbes. The smellier the water becomes, the more nutritious it seems to be.
It's no use dropping actual onion pieces into the bucket -- that just creates a particularly revolting smell without noticeably affecting the water it is floating in. It's the juice (even just a tiny bit of it) that is able to turn the entire bucketful of water into potent liquid plant feed.
    Wishing you all the best!!

We replant all our store bought organic green onion stumps, for continued harvest. We intentionally select bunches that look healthy with nice looking roots, and leave about an inch of onion up from the roots. When we cut the the onion stump off we use a sharp knife, and slice carefully making sure not to seperate the layers, as the regrowth struggles from additional bulb die back when the layers get seperated. The regrowth happens very quickly, and we can usually start harvesting one leaf per plant per week, after six weeks of regrowth, during peak growing conditions. Thats about a bunch of harvested greens per week, for every bunch you replant. Of course growing conditions affect growth rates, which affects frequency of harvest, and its best to make sure the new growth is sufficient to replace the harvested leaf on each plant before harvesting again. To keep your onions healthy, always harvest the oldest leaf on each plant, and don't start harvesting untill you have al least 5 full leaves. I try to make sure I never harvest more than 20% of the total greens, and if they put out an onion scape, when I dont want them to flower, i just trim of the scape while its still tender, and use it like any green onion. Starting onions from seed can take many months to get green onions gowing enough to harvest, but by replanting my green onion stumps, as described, I can start harvesting some greens in about 6 weeks under optimal growning conditions as described above. Every bunch replanted, will yeild about a bunch of just the greens per week once established. I personally like to plant extra because, well for one I like green onions, for two the best stroage is on the plant, and three, letting the plants grow larger, with less frequent harvests, keeps them healthier, while providing larger leaves on average. Cheers! : )

Ma'am, in the first method you cut the onion above the root abt 1 inch and let it be until 4-5 shoots start to grow, then u plant in bigger pot. Will that 1 partially onion with 4-5 shoots planted in a pot grow to become 4-5 different onions? Or shud we remove them and replant it as 5 different onion plants?
