    I was raised as a Baptist from VA. Yes, I was Southern Baptist. Still pondering. As a young adult woman, I was totally in support of all jobs being for women, even in the Church. Per Susan White's article. I too had a change of heart, in my 50's. Maybe it was age. Maybe it was because I read and studied THE BIBLE with more diligence. I chose to follow THE WORD OF GOD.

    Can it be that "cultural christianity" is just what being a city on a hill looks like? I am blessed to live in a red state, a socially conservative county, the Bible belt. It concerns me to see the progressive agendas coming in, mainly through the schools, but now from an influx of blue state residents fleeing to our little state. Thank you John for reminding us it's the perfect opening to share the goodness of God.

    According to Scripture, the GIFT of Pastor IS NOT the same as the OFFICE of Elder. Women can be Pastors. Women cannot be Elders. Elders are only to be men, and are appointed to Rule the Church. Pastors can be women, who are themselves submitted to the Elders.

    Paul was concerned about spiritual maturity, not chronological age. We know this because he exhorted Timothy to exercise eldership at a young age and to not let anyone use his youth against him. It is also clear from his milk/meat metaphor. It is thus clear that there were women elders that many explain away as "old women" such as in Titus 2, but he would not assign a teaching role to someone who is old but not spiritually mature. It is mature believers teaching those new to the faith, and both men and women new to the faith must be taught to love and subject themselves to fellow believers for harmony of the community out of reverence to Christ (Ephesians 5, especially vs. 21). The problem with this woman's article is that she doesn't acknowledge the female leaders she listed as elders - or those who are spiritually mature, yet they had to be to do the work that they did. And indeed, the passages on qualifications of elders contain the term "likewise women" or "in the same way", which means women have qualifications from those passages, especially to being deacon - that is indisputable since it matches Pheobe's title and the charge for the church to help her in whatever business she has. We can only conjecture what her business was, but it was important enough for Paul to commend her. The passage about silence is not a forever command, but rather, in keeping with the message of the whole passage, instructions for women to be self-disciplined and not talk over those speaking other people so the order of service is maintained. We know it is not a forever command because Paul refers to women praying and prophesying in church. Those that misuse this passage to say women must be utterly silent, go against Paul's instructions on worship, and indeed some churches will not allow a woman to sing a song, read scripture, or offer a prayer when gathering because they take an absolutist position that it is out of harmony with Pauline theology. In the modern era we have seen women speak and witness publicly, especially missionaries who take on significant risk and role to further the kingdom. I can speak to the passage on women not having authority, but want to keep this brief. One thing I do know is that Jesus said the harvest is plentiful but workers few - and therefore we must be careful about taking believers out of ministry and evangelism, such as women. I have not settled in my own mind about lead pastors and I don't intend to respond to angry commenters (this is also counter to Paul's instructions, 1 Tim. 2:8).

    • @KM-zn3lx
      @KM-zn3lx Před rokem +3

      Thanks for your thoughtful response. You've clearly thought about this subject. I'm a woman who has seen women pastors, such as Joyce Meyer and Beth Moore weaken the Churches they lead with emotional sermons almost totally "me" directed. I used to watch Joyce Meyer and thought she was good until she steadily became self centered rather than Christ centered. Look at all the mainline churches that have divided or become almost obsolete, women pastors! Phoebe was a deaconess of her own household church so yes, she organized and probably had money to support the disciples. But when she wanted to confront a brother in Christ she did it with her husband in private. Women can lead but not in leading a Church. I'm struggling with this view as I've been called a sexist in the Pentacostal church I attend. They also don't listen to me about music ministry using more biblical Christian songs. I'm about ready to walk out the door!

      I’m not seeing how what you’re pointing out here in scripture means there should be women pastors or how thinking they shouldn’t be somehow means they won’t serve at all considering women can be deacons and that they can teach other women in church among other things. Not to mention the great commission usually happens outside of church. Still, thank you for the measure response. Unusual but welcome.

    • @elibennett6168
      @elibennett6168 Před rokem

      @@KM-zn3lx I think you have mixed up Phoebe and Priscilla. It is Priscilla who corrected Apollos' knowledge of scripture and he went on to be a great evangelist. Also, it is eisegesis to use your observations of modern speakers issues and read them back into scripture. There are plenty of problematic male speakers. In fact, a characteristic of end times is male false teachers and naive/weak women (see 1 Tim 3). Spirituality maturity was and always has been important for women.

    • @elibennett6168
      @elibennett6168 Před rokem +1

      @@ab-gail Thank you for the comment. It was written because of the scripture that the Trusthscript writer used to justify her new position, which this video quoted. If the scriptural proof is lacking, then the writer's point has not been proved. To the point: Pastors and deacons are elders, and some interpret pastor and elder as interchangeable terms. Paul encouraged people to use the gifts given by the Spirit toward the edification of the church: "26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up." 1 Corinthians 14. The term "adelphoi" (brothers and sisters) is typically used as inclusive of women and it indicates typical worship activities of the early church. Scripture must be consistent with scripture and so we must address the inconsistency of an absolutist view with this guidance. That's why it is an important discussion for the church. The writer, and this channel, believe in the silence of women and thus exclusion from these worship activities.

      @@elibennett6168yes, thank you.
      The "some" list (pastors, evangelists, teachers, etc) was it directed at men only or were women given gifts also? If so, were the use of their gift limited to teaching only other women and children? If limited, then how were these gifted women preachers/teachers operating in their gift?
      I, for one, am not strictly of one camp or the other. While I've witnessed some (very, very few I might add) Christian women as having more wisdom and understanding and knowledge than the pastor I cannot say I would be 100% comfortable with them taking over the pulpit.
      However, there have been many (too many imo) pastors who I believe should either have never been allowed in the pulpit OR should have been removed from it until further maturity in their personal lives and knowledge of the scriptures.
