  • This old fashioned popcorn balls recipe comes from The Woman’s Home Companion Cook Book which is from 1944. You can add whatever you want to these like peanuts, candy etc or you can just leave them as is. Take care not to burn yourself when you make these! Enjoy!
    2/3 cup molasses
    1 ½ cups sugar
    ½ cup water
    1 TSP vinegar
    ¼ TSP salt
    3 TBSP butter
    2 to 2 ½ quarts unsalted popcorn
Put your popcorn in a large heat-proof bowl. Combine molasses, sugar, water, vinegar, and salt in a heavy saucepan. Put it over low heat and stir until it begins to boil. When boiling, stop stirring, and heat until the mixture reaches 270F (hard ball stage). When it’s at 270F, take the mixture off the heat and add the butter. Stir the butter until the mixture is just combined. Quickly drizzle the mixture over the popcorn and stir until every kernel is coated. Let it cool until you can handle it without getting burned. When cooled down, grease your hands and form 2 ½ inch balls (don’t use too much pressure when forming these). You should be able to make around 2 dozen balls. Let the balls dry out on a plate without touching each other. Enjoy!

What was/is your favorite treat to get on Halloween?! I get pretty excited for peanut butter cups and pretty much anything chocolate!

I'm a huge popcorn fan, so flavored popcorn is always a hit with me. I also love buttery desserts. I once had a co-worker who would bake this cake, and pour loads of a butter/brown sugar mixture over it. It was to die for! Thanks for asking. 😀

If we made a drinking game out of Molly says balls, we would be passed out before we got to try the treat. But they do look like extremely delicious balls. 😋

LOL!!! That's a dangerous drinking game! You will have to try these balls out sometime!

Very cool! I always enjoy a vintage recipe. Upon occasion when I use caramel in a dessert dish I'll add just a touch of butter to the caramel to soften it up so when it cools it isn't so hard. I'm wondering, do you think that will work for molasses?

That could work! The recipe calls for 3 TBSP of butter in the sauce but a little bit more could soften it up some.

    Looks amazing!
    Just curious......why the Vinegar?

Thank you! Honestly, I wondered the same thing about the vinegar. I'm not 100% sure why it's in there but I do know that some caramel recipes call for vinegar and it's addition can help prevent any crystallization so the sauce remains creamy and smooth. That might be why vinegar is in here. I haven't made a whole lot of candy from scratch but I plan on doing a new playlist for all these old candy recipes so it'll be really interesting to learn all these little tricks! Thank you so much for watching the video and leaving a comment!
