- I was given the opportunity to test out the new YesWelder CUT-55ds plasma cutter, and I think it's a great deal for the money (watch the video). In the beginnings of Strange Garage, money was a huge issue in the Strange Garage. I have to pick my tools carefully, so a plasma cutter (and an air compressor big enough to power it) were not a high priority, and I had sort of forgotten about them. Being given a plasma cutter changed everything. Not only is it a great shop tool, but I get the opportunity to build a CNC plasma table.
This plasma cutter has been good to me so far, I will keep you guys updated!
I've never technically been a professional welder but I've worked in a lot of shops welded plasma cutters all kinds of stuff nobody has ever taught me about thermal overload that is something I think should be taught first before somebody picks a whip up thank you sir.
EXCELLENT informational video. Like the product (my son just bought one), the DIY CNC set-up is ingenious...and at 72, I think I am going to have to buy one !
Lol the ending. Thanks for the review.
I just had to throw that in there somewhere! Thanks for watching!
I don't need a plasma cutter, but I want one. I've been known to buy expensive tools and only use them once. I spent more on my last Dewalt tool pack (they came in a rolling tool box) than this thing costs. I'm about to stop RVing full time and get a house again. A 3 car garage is on the wish list. If I get that, I'm seriously going to get a plasma cutter.
Yep, I am the same way. I never needed one but I loved the idea of having one. Of course, having a CNC plasma cutter is going to come in handy!
Expensive tools are good and bad. Obviously the quality is typically really high.
Great review man! I appreciate it as I own one of these as well!
Brilliant video thank you 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
First off brother I love the Simplicity of your CNC machines it has given me a kick in the pants to start building one myself this will be my second table the last plasma table I built was about 12 years ago and everything is changed I was running a Miller Spectrum 1000 since sold it I have a simadre plasma cutter that I bought in a pinch and it's been going for 10 years no problem granted it's not hooked up to any CNC machine. I'm looking at the yeswelder ds65 I'm just wondering if this will work decently for a hobbyist small plasma table. I'm just going to do a 2x4 table maximum will probably be half inch cuts and it won't be production cuts just parts for my own project vehicles. I'm just wondering how big of an issue you've had with the duty cycle any comment will be great thank you
I like using the wooden templates too, the steel ones seem ot stick a little.
cool table ..... and not too big. I like it
Should be pretty good. I think the working dimensions are 42x30. Its big but not too big.
Cool video. I got me a 55ds . Mine came with a wire cup around the pink cup. what's the wire cup for? Also, do you have videos of wood jigs for plasma cutter?
Thank you for your time in making this video. Just to clarify, on Yeswelders website it shows: "Max Rated Clean Cut Thickness: 5/16"@110V, 1/2"@220V" so have your used it too cut 1/2"? or is 1/2" is just a little far fetched?
I'll see if I can come up with some metal to try this. I have to do a follow up video anyway so these are good questions.
It cuts 3/16" really well! I am really happy with the cut quality.
@@StrangeGarage Is there an update on this? It's been a year plus, just curious if you tested it on thicker steel and if the unit itself is holding up?
What is the duty cycle on 220
Nice review. How do you like the YesWelder panoramic helmet? Thinking about getting one like in this video.
It's incredible. Without a doubt the best welding hood I have ever owned.
nice
So how do you get around the duty cycle with plasma cutter? do you just run at a third power?
It's very tricky. I programmed a 15 second pause between every cut, and I run it below maximum power when I can. What I have not determined, is it better to run it faster at full power or slower at lower power? It's hard to say.
I have run it for 10 minutes continuous, only ill effects is it eats consumables. I believe the machine can cope, so I MAY replace the torch with a more robust one.
@@StrangeGarage I assume you would look into a straight torch if replaced. I DIY a lot of stuff and have been looking at doing a DIY plasma cutter but always feared the interference with high frequency from plasma cutter.
@@digitizer101 I posted the build video today actually. Youre right on the money, a straight torch for sure. I talk about how I mitigated the EMI in the video, I don't have any issues anymore, but at first it was a really buggy machine.
How about hardwire connecting to a panel. Is it 10 wire gage and double pole 50amp breaker? Anyone know?
50 amp breaker uses 6 wire, I have it connected to a 30 amp circuit. which is 10 gauge wire, 30amp breaker. on 120 volts & I can cut 1/4" no problem. @ 35-40 amp
Hi. Thanks for review. What compressor you running this on?
I was using a 6 gallon porter cable, it didn't keep up with my CNC at all. I bought a brand new Mcgraw 25, that thing was a POS, now I use an old 30 gallon craftsman, that one works ok.
@@StrangeGarage thanks. I ordered it now I have to figure out where I can make room for 30 gal compressor or cancel the order. Not sure which.
@@StrangeGarage thanks for the awesome reply though. I truly appreciate it
Where can you get consumables? Does it use common consumables and parts?
eBay, or directly from YesWelder. I will check on compatibility with other machines.
I ordered them from 3 differen't places: From YesWelder, from ebay, and direct from China. The YesWelder order showed up last... I know, a little disturbing. They're about $2 per set, and they were easy to find.
You never showed or told Anything about the air capacity needed or how to hook it up. Like how much air pressure do I need? How large of a compressor? Just several questions left unanswered for a green horn like me. Thank you.
what are the air compressor requirements for this plasma cutter
Just about any compressor will run it, but you'll want a 10+ gallon to run for any length of time. I use a 30 gallon, and it works great!
I have zero experience with a plasma cutter. Will this cut 1/4 or even 1/2 inch steel? I was going to send my cad file to a place that would cut it for me but it was filthy expensive. So for the money I am thinking I can cut it myself. Granted my hand won't be as steady as a computerized cutter, but... Lol 😂
Can you cut aluminum?
Sort of. It cuts, but it's super weird. It leaves powdered aluminum all over, and the cuts look terrible. Probably just because I never practice. It does cut though.
@@StrangeGarage thanks bro, they just reached out to me also for my channel, I’ve also never had one before, working on a golf cart and want to cut aluminum rails for the rusted out steel running board coping. Thanks bro.
Real nice review. I only wish mine worked. Pure chinese junk. Mine was no good out of the box. Pressure gauge only reads 30psi. I don’t know whether I have to much or to little air pressure. Arc goes out after a few seconds. Yeswelder is putting unreasonable demands on me to fix it.
I have heard nothing but the opposite from other online reviews so just purchased seven of these for stocking stuffers.
Ciao, I've seen some reviews mention that the welder does NOT have a contactless start, that it is HF not pilot arc. Are you able to confirm this? Many thanks 🙏
Pure garbage. Couldn't adjust air pressure right from the box. They won't repair or replace.
Like the regulator didn't work? I'm not trying to be rude, but did you pull up on the knob before twisting it?
I'd have more respect for these bottom feeder companies if they came up with normal names for their stuff. How about Shezen welding company? Or LongDuckDong supply company? Doesn't matter, I wouldn't buy one anyways.
