    Many of you have asked about the Dynamic Range Tests & if there was a mix up. There wasn't. The methodology section is talking about HOW it is done. If there are any doubts, you can see the original tests here, including EXIF DATA: www.michaelthem... - includes the D750 vs 5Diii vs 7Dii
    The opening music is called “Sinister Intent” by Danny Locke and it was licensed through songfreedom.com - he does some spectacular work and I hope to license more of his music in the future. The stead-cam shots were all done with the Canon 5Diii on a glide-cam 4000.
    First off, you should know the Canon 5Diii is my workhorse camera. I used it nearly every single day I shoot. There is something about the look of the image itself I still ove, and it is very easy to use. I don’t think that will change too much in the immediate future.
    When I originally started testing the Nikon D750 I was just super impressed with the still images coming out of it, there was a look and a sharpness that was noticeable and I found myself wanting to use it more and more. Eventually I came to the conclusion that the D750 was very different than the D600/610 based on image quality alone and it actually lined up very well against Canon’s 5Diii. Despite using both cameras regularly since their release, I knew that it would be impossible to say for sure which one was better and how, unless I did an Epic Shootout on them. I believe you will find many of the results surprising. This video represents a good 3-4 weeks of testing and production, so just know I do not take my Epic Shootouts lightly. Many of the tests were performed several times.
    In the end, your skills as a photographer are going to be much more important than the camera you are using, if you are struggling to learn you camera, I have you covered:

    Michael, this is THE BEST scientific, fool proof comparison that I have seen in some time. Especially, your surprise element on the Portrait shoot out completely defeated my opinions. I was so judgmental about one of the brands when it came to un-edited portrait photos, but your comparisons were simply spectacular and helped unveil a winner for specific reasons. Though it's a matter of personal preference, the portrait shoot out nailed the decision for me!!! Thank you!!!

    That was great and unbiased. As someone that is considering buying a D750, you have greatly aided in my discussion. Full frame DSLRs can be a considerable investment for some of us and you have made me quite comfortable that I am staying with Nikon. The portrait teat was very well presented. More people should have that kind of approach. Thank you for your hard work.

    To be honest I am biased towards the D750 and have recommended it to multiple people over the 5d3. When I took the portrait test I got 10 points for the 5d3 and 3 for the 750, WOW!

    Great video Michael. I appreciate your work. I purchased your D7100 crash course and have since upgraded to the D750. Great comparison. I agree with the focusing - it could be better, i find it works a lot better on 70-200 2.8 though.
    You didn't touch on the auto ISO feature or the power aperture in video mode - it handles itself very well going from outside on a sunny day to inside a darker room - seamless.
    The button customisation is a lot better in the D750 compared to other models too. I've mapped the ISO button to the video record button meaning i can adjust everything with my right hand and never take my eye away from the view finder.
    Once again - great video, Keep it up.

    As an owner of both cameras, I was stoked to see that you did an epic shootout between the two. Fantastic as always! In going back and forth between the two in the last month, I was surprised to find that the Canon 5DIII focus system was clearly still better. I was particularly surprised because the D750 is supposed to have the same system as the D4s. Your testing further confirmed my own experience. I shot about 30 weddings over the last two summers and find the focusing of the 5DIII to be indispensable.
    It took no time to see that ISO and DR clearly go to the Sony sensor in the Nikon. That was definitely not a surprise and I hope Canon steps up their game in the Mark IV. In terms of color, I always shoot the Canon using a Kelvin WB setting regardless of subject matter (unless I'm using flash, then flash WB). I recently put it back to auto WB to compare with the Nikon. I definitely prefer the auto WB in the Nikon over the Canon and am comfortable leaving the Nikon on auto WB for most scenarios. When I leave the Canon on Kelvin, color comparison is a wash and I don't seem to have a preference between the two.
    Finally, from just a pure shooting experience, I find the Canon more enjoyable to use and more ergonomic for my hands. It's still my favorite all-time camera although I'm sure the D750 is going to see some heavy use in the future also. Thanks again for all your hard work!!

  • @macporteiro
    @macporteiro Před 5 lety +5

    Man... is this the best camera review I have ever seen? Probably yes! You're incredible. I have a D750. Video is by far more beautiful in the 5D mark III in my opinion, but I do love how deep into the ISO the Nikon can get, which helps a lot in events for example, due to low light conditions. Problem is... when the focusing system does its job! hehehe... I love both cameras, and if I had money I'd buy the 5D for video recording. But my test was 11 (D750) x 2 (5D MK3), so I think I do prefer the image on my Nikon. The grip thing is a reality, I have never compared that before but I notice it every time I use my camera - finger space!!! Once I almost dropped my camera because of that. I have it on video by the way. Well, thanks for this amazing recording, 5 yeas have passed but it's still so current, how come haven't I seen it before?? Just great, congratulations! Gonna subscribe and watch more of your work. A7s vs GH4... hmmm... interesting! God bless you always. Take care.

      MichaelTheMentor Great review. I can't decide between those cameras. I ll use it equally for corportate videos and for stills. Why do you prefer the 5DIII over the D750 for video? Is it about the low light performance?

    • @G53X0Y0Z0
      @G53X0Y0Z0 Před 9 lety +1

      I chose the Nikon images as being better 4 out 13 times. The better dynamic range was the reason when I chose the D750 as better between two shots. Other wise, when the dynamic range of the scene isn't pushing the 5D, I think the Canon 5D MIII IQ is clearly better. I do question the equality of the lenses and perhaps some other factors, such as in camera sharpening.
      There were some instances where I felt the lighting angle (reflection) had shifted some (even from the model slightly moving) giving an advantage to one or another. Also, adjusting the white balance in post could rectify some of the issues I noticed. I believe the Canon is worth the extra $1,000 but they're both good cameras with pros and cons and the Nikon certainly has some strong points.

  • @uniktbrukernavn

    When you tested the Nikon D750 vs the Canon 6D I preferred the Canon portrait colors more, but in this test I preferred the D750 output by a big margin.
    It's not that difficult to correct the WB but I would have guessed that the Canon 6D and 5D would give similar results.
    I own the Nikon D750 btw (used to be a Canon shooter).
    Nice shootout!

    Im a wedding photographer, mostly doing low light work. I used the 5D mark III for 2 years and then switched brands to the Nikon D3s and then the D750. In my experience, low light focusing, in terms of accuracy, is much better on the D750 than on the 5D. Plus, when focussing with the flash focus assist beam, the D750 is way faster than the 5D, but keep in mind that what lenses you use focus at different speeds.

    It's funny how some people get angry that reviewers do tests of the 3 year old 5d3 against the newest from Nikon, like the 810 and 750... but then you just have to ask them... "uhh, well what the hell else would you put against the 810 and 750? That is Canon's 'latest and greatest'"

So moving subject focus isn't a key thing for me, however, I have obsessive issues over focus. I was surprised to hear about Canons focusing points.I really enjoyed the portrait test - I scored 8 for D750 and 5 for the Canon. So to my eye these are both almost neck n neck. Hi Michael. You are my new favourite camera goto guy now in youtube! Awesome in depth comparisons between the cameras. You are absolutely correct for claiming for having the best review comparisons in the planet! I'll sure share your videos with my friends. Few of us are in the midst of deciding what to buy. I currently have a d7000 which I've had for 4 years now. I think it's time for me to upgrade... I think mainly because of the price factor I'll go with the Nikon! I'm not a professional photographer, so I think the d750 will suffice more than enough. Kinda sad though why Nikon couldn't best the 3 year old Canon at every instance! The Canon 5d markiii surely has the best focus points features.

    I find myself more drawn to the Canon video and coloring on stills, but the fact is, the D750 is just a better value, which is why I ended up buying it (kitted with a 24-120mm Nikkor for $2,500). Thanks to editing, you can pretty much shape it to get the coloring you want. I don't think it will ever beat Canon on video no matter how much editing is done, but it's close enough to be usable. I agree, the focusing system on the Nikon is a bit of a frustration.

    Awesome comparison video. On the test I got 10 for the D750 and 3 for the Canon 5D. I just sold my D7100 last week and getting the D750, I can't wait. And even thought I still think the Canon 5D blows nikon out of the water for video shooting, my primary use of a DSLR is photo stills not video so I will definitely go with the D750, superior dynamic range and features for the money. If I was a video shooter, I would definitely go with the 5D Mark iii.

  • @peds103
    @peds103 Před 9 lety +3

    Thanks for the video Michael. This sums up my view on the Nikon vs Canon (as a Nikon shooter).
    1. High ISO not significant... has slight advantage depending on which one is newer (faster glass would make more of an impact).
    2. Canon lenses have a slight advantage overall, in quality and lineup. There are some that are better for Nikon but there are more from Canon that I wish Nikon would have.
    3. Focusing system - Canon wins hands down. As with this test even with almost 3 years difference the 5DIII still edges out the Nikon. Although "maybe" some of the new features for Nikon could offset that (like group area AF, if this was not a direct comparison of single af point performance). Still, I've always wished the Nikons would have the Canons' AF (spread and crosstype).
    4. Dynamic range - Nikon whips Canon's ass with this hands down... Canons have had pretty crappy DR for a while now (at least by today's standard and not just compared to Nikon). With the high ISO comparison not really making a significant headway for either this is the deciding factor for me. 2 stops difference (accross the board/lineup) is big. Well that and that Nikons are generally cheaper in my country.
    5. Ergonomics is just a matter of preference. The labeling of Tv, Av and the focusing type for Canons just doesn't do it for me. It's silly and superficial but it somehow matters to me. I'm sure everyone can make similar points for the labeling, button placements, control types grip comfort for either camera lineup.
    6. Portrait (WB) test doesn't matter much to me as I shoot raw. I'd like to sort/screen and tweak (if necessary) them in first place. Although it would be nice if it get's it right the first time.
    Bottom line is you can't go wrong with either one. You'll just have to weigh what's important to you. The best professionals out there some years ago shot with cameras that aren't any better than the current lineup of entry level cameras and they produced stunning results with it.

    • @MMaven
      @MMaven  Před 9 lety +1

      ArjunaKodi You mean to change a variable for one camera, and not for the other? That would skew the results. Besides, tracking a moving runner with one square only is quite easy.

    • @RyanAlbertRucas
      @RyanAlbertRucas Před 9 lety

      MichaelTheMentor What about tracking the subject with what the camera's best AF mode has to offer? Zone AF AI Servo on Canon(maybe, not familiar with Canon) and Group Area-AF on the Nikon, it could draw both weakness and strength on both cameras. This could be not a balanced though but these are really interesting comparison. Just an opinion though but overall this is a very in depth review indeed.

    Great unbiased review. I switched from Canon to Nikon years ago, but I am noticing occasional off focus with the D800, D800e, and D5300. I came from a 5D Mark II so initially the focusing is much improved (versus one usable focal point).
    Good to see Canon really improved focusing, but when focus is on, the Nikon image is so much better. I hope Nikon fixes the occasional front/back focusing issues, because that can really be a bummer. Of course it happens more on 3rd party lenses in my experience.
    On the portrait test I scored 3 Canon, 10 Nikon. The Canon tends to be warmer which is ideal for portraiture (I always post process anyway), but detail and DR is muddy in a lot of the Canon shots.

    • @Nox665
      @Nox665 Před 8 lety +2

      +Barkar I dont' see how... clipped highlights cannot be recovered.
      In normal conditions, recovering shadows with a D750 without adding substantial noise is not an issue.
      Note that when I say "underexposing the image" I mean adjusting the exposure so that the highlights are just about to be clipped.

    • @barkar8139
      @barkar8139 Před 8 lety

      The technique is called "Exposing to the right".
      Do a quick google search and see it yourself.

    • @panh141298
      @panh141298 Před 8 lety

      +Barkar That technique is outdated now, when cameras are able to output images with such low noise. Nowadays, underexposing then bringing the shadows up is a viable way of preserving the highlights. Do note that this works better with Nikon since their cameras have much lower shadow noise, as evident in every camera comparison.

  • @juancarloscalventecrespo4979
