      There's a good reason Canon and Nikon are the two big brand.. and nowadays Nikon is kicking Canon ass so they wake up (or stop their idiot market segmentation). Intel and AMD are doing the same .. some years Intel kicks asses, this year it's AMD.. so goes the market

    • @Koushikdbrp
      @Koushikdbrp Před 6 lety +12

      I'm a Canon user and couldn't agree more. Canon is just not innovating anymore. Their technology is old, they are trying to earn big by ripping off customers. In case of video, people say that Canon doesn't want to affect their cinema camera market by giving good video functionalities in their DSLRs... but Sony has a Cinema camera line too... how are they putting such great specs in their full frame mirrorless cameras for such a comparatively cheaper price? Canon probably needs new managers and marketing analysts.

    This is SUCH a hard choice for me. You told me exactly what I need to do at 12:36 - you said, "If you're somebody that's shooting video and you need continuous autofocus, you're going with the Canon." That's ME. But the fact that it uses old technology worries me because I don't plan to upgrade for another 4 years or so. Am I making the wrong choice since it doesn't have all the latest technology? Or does that even matter if my main problem is that I need a camera that can focus really well? I have a CZcams channel and I'm a one-woman show. I have had plenty of shots ruined because my Nikon D7100 just doesn't focus. Hmmmm.......

    What Canon or Nikon camera do you recommend me for Birding, Wildlife and Landscape?
    I have 3 canidadates: Nikon D850, Canon 5DSR and Canon 5D Mk IV.
    I was always interested in 5DSR, but it does not have good quality with high ISO's.
    If you had to photograph the milk way, surely a D85o or 5D Mk IV works better than the 5DSR.

    Jared, how would you compare the D500 and D850 AF performances? Do you think that the only difference is the points spread or, as many people are saying, the D500 does have a better keep rate?

  • @smooth6718
    @smooth6718 Před 4 lety +1

    I have a D850 and a D500. I use back-button focusing on both. With regards to the switching from continuous to single and back again, this can easily be done by assigning this function to this function, which I have done and switching is a joy. Also, one finds that shooting in 46 MP has its shortcomings like you say, it is very simple to change to a lower res in the menu of the D850. Thus, delete the two checks from the Canon and call it a draw.

    If I were starting again, I would likely go with the Fuji XT2. I had the chance to try this Camera and I was smiling from ear to ear with it. It is the only camera I have tried whose ergonomics match Canon for comfort and usability (speaking for myself). The picture and colour quality is also excellent- even the jpegs with the film simulations are superb. I will be adding the Fuji as a second system next year.
    Between the two in the video, As I said in my main comment in Jared's pinned post. I had the chance to jump to Nikon but chose to stay with Canon and I'm happy with my decision.

    Canon... I have been using a 7D-Mkii for almost 2 years now and am happy with it. Was looking to add a full frame and some new lenses soon but will wait and see if a 5D-Mkv has major upgrades (I suspect it will). I won't bash Nikon because they are definitely pushing the envelope right now, but I have always been suspect of some issues they have had in the past. My brother has a professional video company in Florida and uses 2 5D-Mkiii's for all his work. I asked him if he was gonna upgrade to 4K Video and he said "No way". Too much money to upgrade all of his equipment to edit it, and to this point no customer has ever asked him if he shoots 4K.

    I bought my daughter a Nikon D750 last year and myself a Mark IV just the other day (used, still hasn't made it here yet). I have always used Canon (over 30 years) which is why I went with it but I love my daughters D750 and steal it all the time. That's a great camera. I would love to try that 850. But hopefully my Mark IV which I haven't got to use yet doesn't stink as bad as this review seemed to make it. I just have always loved Canon menus and overall ease of use plus have too much glass to throw away. I've wanted a mark iv since it came out but the prices were always too high.

    Hi Jared, Sorry I might have missed if you pointed out where to see the sample videos. I do videos and I don't use continuous auto focus (although it's nice to have that feature). For me the problem is colour representation in the low light. Is there any low light comparison for these two cameras? I found out that not only the colour representation changes with low light (cracking up the iso) but also the dynamic range. I imagine the original spec dynamic range is based on the sensor native iso. If we increase the iso to let's say 4 or even 8 times of the native iso, how dynamic range is going to be impacted? I mean not on the paper but in a shooting scenario, and plus the grading. Thank you.

    I'm a Canon user, and I'll agree, the D850 is a much higher performing camera in almost every category. That being said, the camera that you can use the best/the most fluidly, will yield the best photos for you. I stayed with Canon and got the 5D Mark IV, for a few reasons. (1). I have, and am used to my Canon glass, how it renders how it handles different lighting scenarios etc. (2). I rarely need more than 20-25MP, much less 45. (3). I never shoot video, ever...if it was up to me they would take it out of SLRs and just make the camera lighter and less expensive. and (4). I prefer Canon's default color profiles, yes you can tweak raw to look however you want but that's just another step to add to the workflow. At the end of the day, there are a lot of non-quantitative, quality of life aspects that affect how a camera system handles, and how it influences your workflow. The most important decision is to pick the one that fits yours best so you can continue to enjoy photography and not be bogged down with gear and workflow quirks. Happy shooting everybody!

      I agree totally on these companies should take the 'video' aspect, right out of the DSLR! Buy a dedicated video camera for video! These dedicated video cameras are downright low cost items these days, and as you say, adding quality features plus lower weight would be much better!

      hmmm... a lot of words. Jarad (aka, 'That Nikon Guy') just said the Canon 5D4 had better 4K video quality than the Nikon D850, and he also said the Canon has superb, market leading AF on video (and live view stills, btw), whereas the D850 has terrible AF during video. Miss focus, and your shot is toast. You Nikon fanboiz crack me up.
      The other issue not covered here is sports still shot AF. I do know the 5D4 AFs on birds-in-flight really well, if using Canon Glass, and drogonflies in flight down @ the pond should be no problem. Canon excells in this. What about the Nikon, how does it do with Nikon glass ? Most Nikon users in the 3 clubs I'm in seem to use Sigma or Tamron glass (doesnt Nikon make affordable glass ?) and how is the Nikons BIF AF then ?
      Real world vs specs on paper fanboiz.

    I love talking specs; srsly, I am a gearhead.
    When I baught my first DSLR I was checking facts and statistics what to buy. At this time it was only Canon vs Nikon, so I went to the store and tried both. The user interface / menu system and the Overall handling was the breaking point for me. What are the benefits of technical surpremacy when I don't like the camera as a tool?
    I went with Canon, I am invested in a sh**load of L- lenses and stuff. I see the aspects of a Sony A7R ii, Nikon D850... But I don't want to change, the features of other cameras don't make mine worst. The 5dIV is a great cam, and in real life some of my favorite shots were taken with a 70D, a 6D or even my old 1000D.
    And nobody looked ever at my wall and asked me what camera i used for this or that photo.

    Back in 2003 there wasn't much choices when it came to DSLRs. Canon Rebel 300D was a great camera, but just short after Nikon released the D70. It was better in most cases but also more expensive. I spent the extra cash and went for Nikon. Almost 20 years later i still use Nikon, but are looking in to filming too. So it's an easy choice for me to go for the D850 if i can get it at a good price.
    Well done review as always

    I'm using the Nikon D850. I'm very much impressed with the picture quality and performance, but when it comes to shooting videos it's a struggle. The Autofocus in the D850 is so confusing and we can't trust on it. It keeps hunting always. Can you do a video about the Nikon D850 video autofocus and to resolve the issues.

    Buy the one you want to buy; your customers won't care. No one will stop you and say: "Your burst rate was a bit low on this fantastic shot!" or "Let me compare your shots, to someone who shot the same event on the rival system". One camera does not destroy the other, in fact in the real world, one has absolutely no bearing on the works of the other, unless you are using both at the same time, and like to make visual comparisons; which of course no one does in the real world. At the end of the day, it's your money, there's no right or wrong; choose the one you want, and go take some nice pictures. To be fair, I think this is Fro's conclusion; could have just said that from the get go.

    The specs don't lie, but that being said there is a lot more to a camera than what is on paper. At this end of the gear scale you are going to be getting most of your performance out of knowing your gear, having good lenses and knowing your way around your chosen body.

    So I am a Canon user, but I only have an APS-C Camera. I've been wanting to upgrade to full frame, but so far all new Canon cameras that came out were a bit disappointing (I do both video and photography, and no camera was really satisfying in both areas). Now that I see how amazing the D850 is I am seriously considering switching. Would that be a good idea considering I won't be able to use my APS-C gear anymore anyways? I do have 2 full-frame lenses however. I'm kind of torn - I honestly like Canon and they have a great lens selection, but I can't just keep staying with the hoping for a satisfying new camera someday when Nikon steps up and gets stuff like the D850 out.

      Try the 5D4, hire one, use it, like it, It's a great camera, really great, and personally I couldn't wish for anything more. There are also a lot of people here who have to defend their Nikon purchases and comments like crippled, Nikon all day, Nikon running the race alone are kind of stupid and childish, the end result is what matters and Canon gives me the colours, the sharpness and faithful reproduction of the scene I shot. As for viewing on an iPad, for heavens sake, get a 27" high res monitor and see your photos pop ...

    Nice video. I will say that the most disturbing fact with new cameras is that some are still on UHS-I for the SD-Card slot. There is no reason for that as UHS-II is much faster and is backwards compatible.

    I just bought D850 and it is great. My skill is lacking miles behind. But if you consider shooting videos more than photos, I would still recommend 5D4 because of the focus system in video mode. If you use a rig and focus follower all the time, I guess the difference in focus system does not make a difference any more. At that point, I will go with D850.

    Really love MyGearVault - so thanks for that. I think manufacturers need to lower their pricing faster if they have long production cycles. The Canon is already a year old, and shouldn't be priced the same as a brand new Nikon with newer features. They should lower by at least 15% each year. That would teach a lesson to the manufacturers as well - don't wait 4-5 years between models! I'm a Canon shooter, but I wouldn't buy the Mark IV. I also wouldn't get the 5DSR at this time. I think it's worth waiting for Canon's response to all the great products that came out this past year, i.e. Sony A9 and Nikon D850. But it drives me crazy to see how many people jump ship from one manufacturer to another just because of the latest shiny thing.

    I already have the 5d kit. But if I had to start over I would still go with the canon this time. Yes the Nikon is awesome if your gonna maximize the features. I still value the Canon service center. And my previous canon cameras and lenses have been flawless. I used the service center due to my own fault. I need the continuous video focus. 30 mp is plenty for me. 99% of my images are viewed on my iPad. My $8k canon kit is just fine. The equivalent Nikon kit would cost $10k. I won’t see a $2k image quality increase with the Nikon.

      I've moved (in the menu) to have the ISO button attached to my 'video record' button, so I can just hold it down and change ISO to wherever I wish. Not sure if that's what you're looking for, as I'm not sure if you mean while 'videoing or single image' shooting? I never use my D750 for video...or any DSLR I've owned actually.
