in india it was very common 40 years back to get bespoke shoes as modern shoemaking and big companies were not there.... everything was bespoke from shoes to shirts

Such craftsmanship! This is a hard job even with all of the modern tools. I can’t imagine how quality shoes were made before electricity…
There are craftspeople on yt who use historical methods to make shoes, for example, I know Nicole Rudolph makes historical shoes using old-fashioned methods!
It’s actually a pretty easy technique they just molded and then crafted the shoes with the mold and also there are sometimes were the techniques deferred depending on the country so one person may use their own feet as a “mold” or example to craft shoes
but I’m only talking about info i got from a few books about specific civilizations
there are likely a lot of videos out there, you'd be shocked at the number of historical reenacters that post their content on youtube
Most of those tools were available before electricity. Machines for making shoes, clothes and even baking are pretty old.

와...신발들이 아직까지도 거의 대부분 수제화라는 얘기를 들었는데 이런 과정이 있군요... 풀과 실로...와....
중간에 로션같이 듬뿍 바르는게 뭔가 싶어서 제품명 검색해보니 가죽 접착제라고 뜨네요... 풀과 풀과 풀.... 대단한 작업과정 잘보고 갑니다 :)

beautiful! when I was in college, i had a leather shoe custom made for me at a local shoe shop. that was the best and most comfortable shoe ever! i wonder if that place is still around.. it's been at least 20 years now.
I had shoes made in China years and years ago I wonder what happened to those shoes?

The amount of money I've wasted in the last 10yrs trying to find a single pair of shoes that fit properly and didn't hurt my feet, is astronomical. One day I hope to have enough money to get a pair made just for my feet! 💛 beautiful work!

I knit my own socks out of wool ad mold them to my feet.
Easily can make a pair on the weekend.
I don''t "turn the heel" in the normal way.
Because I never learned how.
Just make extra stitches while knitting in the round.
They feel so good.
Kind of like house slippers.
Also if I have shoes that are too large, I can wear them with thick homemade wool socks,
especially good in winter.

My best friend was a shoe repair man and he would’ve really enjoyed this video. Wish he was still here. God rest his soul. I used to sit in his shop and watch him for hours. This brings me back. I miss him.

I did see your reply that she tried many versions on but I can't help but think if they were custom to her foot that it would have been more comfortable and not needing to try on many versions.

My Grandfather whom was born in 1899 had every pair of shoes crafted by someone in Arkansas. In the 30s they cost him 100 dollars. But he wore every pair crafted his entire life. He lived to be 101 years old. That's quality just like this.

One thing that bothers me - when I stand my feet become wider, so I think it's better making casts of them standing rather than sitting. All my uncomfortable shoes are ones that put pressure on my toes. But then again they had a fitting so if anything was tight, probably was fixed.
Your arches collapse and you likely need orthotics. (I'm someone who needs orthotics for this very reason.)
I noticed that the heel insert was customised, but the toe sections seem like they will squish unnaturally.

It is surprising that the craftsmen have all their fingers considering all the sharp tools they use.
Sharper blades are actually generally safer, you need less pressure to cut through things so if you slip you are less likely to slip far and slice into your hand, if you have a full knife it takes more to cut through something so if you slip the knife goes careening into whatever solid surface it can find next which is often your hand
What an amazing craft this would be to learn! About the only skill I recognized is threading the bobbin & the machine. The rest of it is completely foreign to me & oh, so intriguing. I envy people who have had the opportunity to come into contact with someone who has bern willing to teach them a handcraft such as this…or someone who’s learned independently. Still, most often it’s working with someone who’s a master crafter & has the tools & machinery needed. It’s interesting the similarities I see in this shoe construction and that of a ballerinas pointe shoe. Thank you for sharing this!❤
I'd love to know what custom made shoes cost. It's so very labour intensive and you have such specialized equipment too. Wonderful!
I'm going to be spending close to 1k for a pair of boots. Spendy, yes. But I expect these boots to last for at least 10k miles, minimum, with the caveat of needing a few resolings in there. There's less rubber on a sole tread than a tire tread.
