For many, Rudeboy culture began and ended with pork-pie hats, skinny ties, two-tone suits and a soundtrack of The Specials. But in British director Shimmy’s exclusive short film for SSENSE, we discover that the scene born out of 1950s Jamaica is still alive and stylishly kicking in London - it’s just gone fiercely underground.
In the film, Harris Elliott and Dean Chalkley - co-curators of the Return of the Rudeboy exhibition currently showing at London’s Somerset House - argue that Rudeboy is more a state of mind and sartorial conviction than simply subscribing to dress codes of old. And philosophical Rudeboy Bevan Agyemang gets his swagger on along the streets of Harlesden, north London. Come witness extreme style as an act of defiance.
