Protestant considering catholicism here. Realizing that the Bible is a Catholic book was an I opener for me. Growing up protestant obviously I was never told this. It was basically they are inspired that's what matters. Marian doctrine was hard for me but once I understand it made sense. Once I began praying the Rosary my anxiety has gone down

@@BauchNessMonster "The Old Testament books were written well before Jesus’ Incarnation, and all of the New Testament books were written by roughly the end of the first century A.D. But the Bible as a whole was not officially compiled until the late fourth century, illustrating that it was the Catholic Church who determined the canon-or list of books-of the Bible under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Indeed, the Bible is not a self-canonizing collection of books, as there is no table of contents included in any of the books.
Although the New Testament canon was not determined until the late 300s, books the Church deemed sacred were early on proclaimed at Mass, and read and preached about otherwise. Early Christian writings outnumbered the 27 books that would become the canon of the New Testament. The shepherds of the Church, by a process of spiritual discernment and investigation into the liturgical traditions of the Church spread throughout the world, had to draw clear lines of distinction between books that are truly inspired by God and originated in the apostolic period, and those which only claimed to have these qualities.
The process culminated in 382 as the Council of Rome, which was convened under the leadership of Pope Damasus, promulgated the 73-book scriptural canon. The biblical canon was reaffirmed by the regional councils of Hippo (393) and Carthage (397), and then definitively reaffirmed by the ecumenical Council of Florence in 1442.
Finally, the ecumenical Council of Trent solemnly defined this same canon in 1546, after it came under attack by the first Protestant leaders, including Martin Luther."

Catholicism is so incompasing. So Christian. Hard to explain to Protestants because they think Christianity is just "The Holy Bible" To Catholics, The Bible is a Holy Tool. To Protestants, it's their whole religion. Thain about it. Most Castholics know the Bible plus Real Christianity better than most Preachers! They just don't know it. We know all the Stories in the Bible (if we can just find them). They know a few Bible Verses that they think hammers Catholics, etc. Most are like the Muslems. They rarely read their Holy Book! Also the Protestant Bible is Broken. 7 Books from the Old Testament were Ripped out by Luther and the rest Followed. Did you know Jesus prayed for the Dead? He was a Jew. They pray for the dead for a Month straight. Macabees 2 is about praying for the poor souls. Luther hated purgatory. And on it goes. Brows through a Catechism. You will find All those Bible Quotes. God Bless!

I love that Brandon even thought to define the word "Canon" as most Protestants may not have ever even heard the term Canon. I know I hadn't until I went to RCIA. I've noticed a lot of times when Catholics are talking to Protestants online they will often use words that are Catholic-specific, such as the term Sola Scriptura. While many Protestants are taught this concept, most have never heard the terms "Scripture Alone" or "Sola Scriptura." The concept itself is simply taught. It's important to remember that many terms that Catholics use are Catholic-specific or higher learning specific (Masters or Doctorate in Theology) and not necessarily the everyday common terms used or understood by the majority of those outside of Catholicism. I remember a year after converting I was talking with a Protestant friend and used the word Catechized and after seeing her confused look, I remembered that I only knew that word because of my Catholic experiences.

Attending a Catholic Mass is like being at The Last Supper with Jesus & His apostles. Jesus said the first Mass & told them to continue His offerings until He returns. Receiving Him In Holy Communion is the most beautiful, powerful & intimate union we can have with Him on earth. He said He is the living bread, the bread He gives us is His Flesh, unless we eat His Body & drink His Blood, we will have no life in us. If we do eat & drink of Him, He will raise us up into Heaven for eternal life on the last day. If we eat & drink of Him unworthily, we are liable & bring a sentence against ourselves for not discerning it to be His Body & Blood. Jn 6:51-59, 1Cor11:23-29

Jesus Christ instituted the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). He gave His authority & power to His apostles & their direct successors, Catholic Priests.
2 Corinthians 5:18 But all is of God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ, and who has given us the MINISTRY Of RECONCILIATION.
5:19 For certainly God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, not charging them with their sins. And he has placed in us the Word of reconciliation.
5:20 Therefore, we (Priests) are ambassadors for Christ, so that God is exhorting through us. We beseech you for Christ: be reconciled to God.
John 20:21 Therefore, he said to them again: “Peace to you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
20:22 When he had said this, he breathed on them. And he said to them: “Receive the Holy Spirit.
20:23 Those whose sins YOU shall forgive, they are forgiven them, and those whose sins YOU shall retain, they are retained.”
Matthew 18:17 And if he will not listen to them, tell the Church. But if he will not listen to the Church, let him be to you like the pagan and the tax collector.
18:18 Amen I say to you, whatever YOU will have bound on earth, shall be bound also in heaven, and whatever YOU will have released on earth, shall be released also in heaven.
Matthew 16:18 And I say to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.
16:19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound, even in heaven. And whatever you shall release on earth shall be released, even in heaven.”

I would approach Sola Scriptura as a religious axiom. Attempting to argue against it or disprove it will only raise the ire of those who hold to that belief. It would be similar to arguing with Saint Anslem by saying "but what about that which is greater than that which I just conceived?" This show has been helpful to me. I do need some clarification around referring to priests as Father. This bothered me when I first started attending RCIA. I have since learned about In Persona Christi. It seems to me that referring to Priests as Father is the act of speaking through the priest to God e.g. in the confessional both. I'm guessing that the practice strayed from these sorts of symbolic uses towards more colloquial usages. Is that correct? I really appreciate the reading of the Ark of the Covenant in Exodus as a foreshadowing of Mary. Not that it should matter, but the Protestant in me can see that from my reading of the bible. That Catholic in me appreciates The Church for making the connection.

Hi guys. Protestant here, and first-time viewer/listener (just listened to the podcast). Great conversation! I do have a quibble with something your guest said about Mary and Genesis 3::15b. He said, "Obviously, Christians from every tradition read this as pertaining to Jesus, but what few of them do, beyond Catholics, is understand that this is actually a prophecy of Mary." It really isn't. I have come to appreciate the typology of Mary as the new Eve; I think it's fairly on-the-nose when you learn to use a typological hermeneutical lens. However, I believe this statement (and Brandon isn't alone in making it) goes too far.
TLDR: In the original languages (the Hebrew OT and the Greek Septuagint), the verb forms and pronouns in 3::15b require the 'seed' of 3::15a to be a male. Therefore, in 3::15b it is Jesus, not Mary, who will strike or crush the serpent's head.
    *******
The Hebrew (3::15b) says: ה֚וּא יְשׁוּפְךָ֣ רֹ֔אשׁ וְאַתָּ֖ה תְּשׁוּפֶ֥נּוּ עָקֵֽב In three different places, this unambiguously identifies the seed of the woman as a male. First, the first use of the verb 'will strike' (יְשׁוּפְךָ֣) is an imperfect verb, and can be conjugated for person, gender, and number. The form used in this verse is a third person, masculine, singular verb. This means the pronoun preceding it (ה֚וּא) *has* to be 'he'. There is no other grammatical choice. Second, that pronoun is, in fact, the masculine form, not the feminine, according to the Masoretic vowel pointing. Now, the "vowels" in Hebrew weren't added until later, so this is not as strong a point as the first one. But the Masoretes obviously understood the seed of the woman to be a male. Third, the second use of the verb 'will strike' (תְּשׁוּפֶ֥נּוּ) has a pronominal suffix attached to it (נּוּ). These too are conjugated for person, gender, and number. In this case, it is a 3MS pronominal suffix, or third person, masculine, singular. So, the verb fully translated is, 'you wills strike him'.
The LXX is consistent with this as well. It says: αὐτός σου τηρήσει κεφαλήν, καὶ σὺ τηρήσεις αὐτοῦ πτέρναν. The initial pronoun (αὐτός) is the third person, masculine, singular, nominative pronoun, or, 'he'. When it occurs a few verses later (αὐτοῦ), its form has changed from nominative to genitive, but its person, gender, and number have not changed. They are still 3MS, or 'him'.
What all this means is that Genesis 3::15b unambiguously says, "He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel."
Now, regarding the word 'seed' in Genesis 3::15a... While the Hebrew word for seed (זֶרַע) is feminine in its natural grammatical form, and the Greek word for seed (σπέρμα) is neuter in its natural grammatical form, context must determine whether you're talking about a male or a female. And in this case, the context leaves no room for doubt. The seed of the woman is a male, just as the seed of Abraham is a male (Galatians 3::16). The seed, in both cases, is one and the same-Jesus Christ.
If you've read this far, thank you for indulging me. I really did enjoy the entire conversation. I imagine I'll be back for more.
Oh, and... Thanks for the books. 😜

    • @Aarongorn
      @Aarongorn Před 6 měsíci +4

I should clarify something... If you want to focus on the expression 'the woman' in 3::15a, that's another matter. I agree that Jesus' use of this term for Mary isn't accidental. So, if you want to say that the first part of this verse foreshadows an enmity between Satan and Mary, I think that follows easily enough. But the 'seed' of 3::15a is the 'he/his' of 3::15b-Jesus.

    • @janeyount8412
      @janeyount8412 Před 6 měsíci +4

My understanding is that the verse is about Mary because "the seed of the woman" prophesied the seed of Mary, Jesus Christ. This is the only place in Sacred Scripture that refers to a *woman's* seed. Yet, women don't have "seed" - i.e., sperm. Since no male seed was necessary for the Incarnation, this verse can only apply to the future Mother of the Messiah. Otherwise, the verse would have said "his (Adam's) seed." It is the Catholic understanding that Mary crushes the serpent *through* her Son. This is why paintings of the Virgin often depict her standing on a snake.

    • @tiffanyl4829
      @tiffanyl4829 Před 6 měsíci +4

I don't have my Hebrew or Greek keyboards so I don't want to write very much until I can attach them BUT the Catholic Church means that Mary is the "new Eve" and yes, her choice (God gave us free will she had a choice like Eve to obey and have Jesus)/her son Jesus crushes the head of the serpent/sin. So there is nothing to quibble about. You should read The Jewish Case for Mary. Jesus was Messiah and the Son of Man. He is Greater Than, so Mary is greater than Eve, greater than the Ark of the Covenant. God used Mary so that her choice restored women in the way that Eve's choice led us into sin.

Yeah I didn't read past the first paragraph, because you went all technical. But they are nice sounding words: "conjugated." I would like to use that (somehow). And of course the double wammy, the stand out jingle of the jargon: "pronominal suffix". O my gosh, delicious. But how could one get that into a sentence? Would be a good new years eve resolution.
However, Aarongorn (of Middle Earth?), Hebrew accolyte. I too have sweated over this passage. But the enmity mentioned first is between the Woman and the serpent, then their offspring. The prophecy regarding pronouns (my pronoun is 'it' 😅), does seem to be 'he' in hebrew, but 'it' in the Latin translation. It could be like the mystical body of Christ, and the Woman and her children, from Rev. 12. 'It' expands the 'He' to include 'the Woman'.

In Catholicism, the First Commandment is divided into the First and Second Commandments, while the Ninth and Tenth Commandments are combined into the Tenth Commandment in Protestantism. However, if you read Exodus 20, the numbering 'one, two, three...' is not assigned as it is currently used in Catholicism or Protestantism. Therefore, the differences between Catholic and Protestant classifications arose as they assigned numbers to categorize the Commandments. Catholicism and Lutheranism follow the classification made by Saint Augustine in the 5th century, while the Eastern Orthodox Church, Anglican Communion, and most Protestant denominations follow the classification by the early Jewish scholar Philo in the first century.
In some corners of Protestantism, there are claims that the Catholic Church intentionally omits the Second Commandment and divides the Tenth Commandment into the Ninth and Tenth to avoid the accusation of 'idol worship' regarding the veneration of saints or religious images. However, this claim is unfounded. The veneration of saints or religious images is not idol worship because it involves reverence for the figure depicted in the image, not the image itself. The First Commandment, which commands not to have any other gods before the one true God, inherently includes the prohibition of idol worship.
Therefore, the differences in the Ten Commandments between Catholicism and Protestantism stem from which commandment they include corresponding biblical passages, not because the content of the Commandments itself differs. Ultimately, it is accurate to say that both Catholic and Protestant versions of the Ten Commandments convey the same content.
And it is essential to consider that, even during the time of Jesus, there was no "standard text" regarding the Old Testament Ten Commandments. Various slightly different scripture texts existed, and the authors of the Bible, in the process of editing these traditions, confirmed them all as sacred scriptures without unifying them into a single standard. For example, the commandments in Exodus and Deuteronomy differ. Furthermore, there is no place in the entire Old and New Testaments where the order of the Ten Commandments is consistently repeated. Additionally, Jesus and the Apostle Paul also quote the commandments freely and in different orders.
Therefore, finding common ground with Protestant denominations, especially those belonging to the Calvinist tradition, on this topic is challenging due to differing foundational texts. The Protestant canon considers the Masoretic text in Hebrew as the standard, and the Masoretic text, due to the nature of Hebrew, is ambiguous about where to break sentences. The Masoretic text establishes this breaking point, known as the Masorah. However, the Old Testament texts used during the time of Jesus and the early Christian era were not finalized in their current form. The divisions into chapters and verses in the Bible occurred only a few hundred years ago. Consequently, there are some differences between the Masoretic text and the Septuagint, an ancient Greek translation used by the early Church. While the Masoretic text is undoubtedly authoritative as a Hebrew scripture, it is academically acknowledged that it is not the only source.
Despite the Masoretic text's authority, using it as the sole criterion to discuss the commandments in Exodus presents clear issues. Therefore, the Catholic Church respects the various texts related to the Ten Commandments (not only in Exodus but also in Deuteronomy and any other biblical passage mentioning the commandments). More importantly, the Church emphasizes how Christians, as members of the New Covenant, understand and perceive the spirit of these commandments, rather than focusing solely on the literal content. This is because Christians are no longer a people bound by all the commandments of the Old Testament. While the Church certainly respects the literal meaning of the Ten Commandments in Exodus, the essential aspect for believers is to live out the core spirit encapsulated in these commandments, as Jesus demonstrated. In practice, the Catholic Church continues to consider this as a primary criterion for examining one's conscience. For instance, regarding the Sabbath commandment, Catholics understand and accept it not as the literal Sabbath (Saturday) but as our Sabbath, which is Sunday, commemorating the mystery of Christ's resurrection. If the literal text were deemed crucial, then believers would observe Saturday as the Sabbath, effectively becoming adherents of Judaism rather than Christians.

BUT I think there are some in the Catholic Church that take it a little too far and it confuses our protestant brothers and sisters at a time when we need more unity. Mary is not necessary for salvation, only Jesus is. Mary, like other saints, point to Jesus. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus is what its all about. I wish they knew this about us, that we know the only way to Salvation is through Christ. I always refer people to "What are salvation issues?" Misconception: When the Bible says that a jailer in Philippi “and his entire household were baptized,” it implies that infants were baptized too.
FACTS: For one thing, NO AGES are mentioned! For another, before the jailer and his household were baptized, they heard and accepted “the word of Jehovah God.” (Acts 16:31,32,34) Therefore, they must have been old enough to understand what was said and to believe in God and the Lord Jesus.
Prior to baptism, an individual should understand at least the basic teachings of God’s Word and be living in harmony with those teachings. He must repent of his sins and through prayer, he has dedicated his life to God. (Acts 2:38,41; 8:13) Infants are not able to do these things.

    • @CatholicOnTheSpectrum
      @CatholicOnTheSpectrum Před 5 měsíci

@@casey8726 The Christian can recognize the biblical nature of Catholic worship in the first prayer of the Mass, the sign of the cross. The language of the prayer comes directly from Matthew 28:19, where Jesus commands his apostles to go out into all nations and baptize them “in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.” The gesture, a cross over the body, is implicitly found in the book of Ezekiel when the prophet receives the following instruction: “Go through the city, through Jerusalem, and put a mark upon the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations that are committed in it” (Ezek. 9:4). The mark given was meant to label those among the faithful remnant of God’s people who abhorred the abominations to the Lord and spare them from God’s wrath and judgment.
The significance for the gesture of the cross is that the word for mark in Hebrew is simply the Hebrew letter, taw, which is shaped like an X or plus sign. The Greek version is the letter tau, which is T-shaped, like the Franciscan cross. So the Catholic practice of making the sign of the cross not only reminds the Christian of the cross of Christ, which won the gift of salvation, but in light of the biblical tradition it also serves to be a visible expression of fidelity to the New Covenant in Jesus Christ and separation from the evil ways of the world.
Another part of the introductory rite that parallels the biblical blueprint is the greeting. The priest says, “The Lord be with you,” and the congregation responds, “And with your spirit.” The first thing to note is the biblical origin of the language. It comes from 2 Timothy 4:22: “The Lord be with your spirit.” Like the sign of the cross, the theological significance of the phrase “the Lord be with you” lies in the Old Testament. Throughout salvation history such language is never used for ordinary people in ordinary circumstances. It always signifies a unique vocation and mission that will impact the whole history of Israel and ensure God’s protection and help in carrying out that mission.
For example, when an angel calls Gideon to defend God’s people from a foreign invasion, the angel says, “The Lord is with you” (Judg. 6:12). The angel Gabriel greets Mary with the same phrase (Luke 1:28). When applied to our liturgical experience, this greeting signifies that the laity has access to the power of God to carry out its unique vocation in the Father’s plan of salvation: to be “witnesses to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8) and to “make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28:19). Similarly, when the congregation responds, “And with your spirit,” it acknowledges that the priest too has a unique vocation within the Father’s plan of salvation: to make the cross of Christ present on the altar.
The Confiteor, which is the prayer that begins “I confess to almighty God,” is also rooted in biblical tradition. An examination of the biblical texts in the Old Testament reveals that the act of verbal confession was an essential part of public worship for ancient Israel. When the Israelites renewed their covenant with Yahweh through the priest Ezra after returning to Jerusalem from the Babylonian exile, they “stood and confessed their sins” (Neh. 9:2). Leviticus 5:5 states that the penitent must verbally confess his sins as a part of the ritual for the guilt offering.
A final prayer of the introductory rite that can be seen as constructed from the biblical blueprint is the Gloria. The very first line is a direct quote from the Bible: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.” These are the same words the angel addresses the shepherds with to announce the birth of the Messiah (see Luke 2:14, Douay Rheims Version). The titles that the prayer ascribes to God are also found in the Sacred Page, such as “almighty” (cf. Ps. 68:14, 91:1) and “heavenly king” (cf. Ps. 98:6, 99:4; Is. 43:15). In reference to Jesus, the language of “only begotten Son” comes from John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten [Greek, monogene] Son” (NAB). The title “Lamb of God” comes from John 1:29; “Holy One” is found in Revelation 3:7 and 16:5; and “the Lord” in 1 Corinthians 8:5 and Philippians 2:11.

The next part of the Mass is the Liturgy of the Word, many of whose parts are embedded in Scripture. First of all, the very act of proclaiming the Word of God within the context of liturgy goes back to the book of Exodus. In the liturgical ceremony for the ratification of the Sinaitic covenant Moses “took the book of the covenant, and read it in the hearing of the people…” (Ex. 24:7). The Israelites then responded in faith by saying, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient” (Ex. 24:7).
This corresponds to the liturgical practice of responding to the biblical readings with the words, “Thanks be to God.” It is a form of the New Israel’s response of faith to the New Covenant. Therefore, the liturgy, as the natural habitat for the proclamation of the God’s word, is an essential element of the blueprint for the worship that Israel, both old and new, must offer to God.
A few of the prayers and gestures surrounding the gospel reading also have biblical precedence. One such prayer is the alleluia (Hebrew, “God be praised”)and finds its roots in the Jewish Hallel Psalms (Ps. 113-118), which are prayed in the Jewish Passover liturgy to give praise to Yahweh for deliverance from Egypt in the Exodus.
The alleluia is also found in John’s heavenly vision of the wedding supper of the Lamb at which the angels praise God for his work of salvation through Jesus and announce the coming of the Lamb for his wedding feast (cf. Rev. 19:1-9). Therefore, the Catholic prayer of alleluia prior to the Gospel reading signals the celebration of a new Passover and a participation in the heavenly marriage feast of the Lamb.
While praying the alleluia, one will notice that the congregation stands for the reading of the Gospel. This calls to mind Nehemiah 8:5, where the whole assembly stands when Ezra, the priest, begins to read from the book of the covenant as they renew the covenant with Yahweh after returning to Jerusalem from exile. Just as the assembly of Israel stood for the reading of the old Law of Moses, Christians stand for the reading of the new Law of Jesus as found in the Gospels.
Another detail worthy of mention is the priest’s private prayer before the altar as he approaches the ambo: “Cleanse my heart and my lips, almighty God, that I may worthily proclaim your Gospel.” This request calls to mind the cleansing of Isaiah’s lips in Isaiah 6:6-7, which takes place prior to his prophetical proclamation of the word of the Lord to Israel. The priest, like Isaiah, requests the cleansing of his lips before proclaiming the word of the Lord to the New Israel, the Church.

As the Mass moves into the Liturgy of the Eucharist, one continues to recognize a construct of prayers, gestures, and practices that allude to the Bible. For example, the bread and wine calls to mind the sacrifice of thanksgiving offered by the priest-king Melchizedek in Genesis 14:14-16. It is against this Old Testament backdrop that Jesus, whom the author of Hebrews identifies as a priest according to the order of Melchizedek (Heb. 5:10), offers bread and wine at the Last Supper.
Therefore, the offering of bread and wine in the Catholic Mass signifies that the sacrifice soon to take place is one like Melchizedek, namely a sacrifice of thanksgiving (Greek, eucharistia), and is offered by a priest of the order of Melchizedek, i.e., the priest who acts in persona Christi.
Another Bible passage that may come to mind during the offertory prayers is Daniel 3:39-40 (NAB), where Azariah prays while standing in the midst of the fiery furnace, “But with contrite heart and humble spirit let us be received; As though it were holocausts of rams and bullocks, or thousands of fat lambs, So let our sacrifice be in your presence today as we follow you unreservedly.”
This passage serves as a possible background for the prayer for acceptance of sacrifice, which reads, “With humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by you, O Lord, and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you.”
Along with the prayers of offertory, the priestly act of washing hands models the biblical tradition. According to Leviticus 30:18-21, Moses instructs the Levitical priests to wash their hands in the bronze basin located next to the altar of sacrifice outside the tabernacle before entering to perform their priestly duties. The Catholic priest washes his hands because he is about to enter the heavenly tabernacle that is made present in time and space when he confects the Eucharist.
An additional ritual worthy of highlight is the priestly offering of incense. For any Jew, this calls to mind the altar of incense located in the Holy Place of the wilderness tabernacle and in Solomon’s Temple at which the Levitical priest would minister. Furthermore, St. John describes in the Book of Revelation presbyters, i.e., priests, offering golden bowls of incense in the heavenly sanctuary (cf. Rev. 5:8). Therefore, the offering of incense in the Catholic Mass is one of common practice among the people of God throughout salvation history and signifies that the Catholic faithful mystically participate in the worship of the heavenly Temple.
The next major prayer that contains elements directly derived from the Bible is the Sanctus. The threefold acclamation of God’s holiness-holy, holy, holy-is found in both the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah describes his vision of the heavenly throne room and how within it he sees and hears the angels singing, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts” (Is. 6:3). Similarly, St. John sees the same thing when he is given access to the heavenly throne room of the Lamb. He writes in Revelation 4:8, “And the four living creatures . . . day and night . . . never cease to sing, ‘Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!’” Perhaps this makes sense out of the preface before the prayer of the Sanctus:
“And so, with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with all the hosts and powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim.”
The Sanctus is thus a sign to the Catholic faithful that they are sacramentally entering into the heavenly sanctuary to join their voices with the heavenly beings.

Next in the lineup are the words of institution, which unfortunately cannot be given a full exegesis due to the limited scope of this article. However, a few points cannot go without mentioning.
First, the words “This is my body . . . this is my blood” find their origin in the Last Supper narratives of the Synoptic Gospels and St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians (see Matt. 26:26-28, Mark 14:22-24, Luke 22:19-20, 1 Cor. 11:24-25).
Secondly, the phrase “the blood of the new and eternal covenant” is a combination of Luke’s account, in which he records Jesus to say “the new covenant in my blood” (Luke 22:20) and Matthew’s version, in which Jesus is recorded saying, “For this is my blood of the covenant” (Matt. 26:28).
It is Matthew’s Gospel that most explicitly makes the connection to the Old Testament tradition. If a Jew heard the words “the blood of the covenant,” he would immediately call to mind the ratification ceremony of the Sinaitic covenant in Exodus 24, where Moses says, “Behold the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words” (Ex. 24:8). Therefore, Jesus’ words at the Last Supper signify that it is the ratification ceremony for the New Covenant. It is this New Covenant ceremony that Catholics mystically share in and are present at in the celebration of the Eucharist.
A final prayer that is necessary to establish as part of the Bible blueprint is the anamnesis of Eucharistic Prayer IV, which reads, in part, “we offer you his body and blood, the sacrifice acceptable to you which brings salvation to the whole world.” This offering of Jesus in sacrifice rings a sound of horror to the Protestant ear, considering that Hebrews 7:27 states, “He [Jesus] has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily; . . . he did this once for all when he offered up himself.”
Is the Catholic Church re-crucifying Jesus and consequently among those that the letter of Hebrews speaks of in 6:6: “they then commit apostasy, since they crucify the Son of God on their own account and hold him up to contempt.” The key to answering this question lies in the Catholic doctrine that the Eucharist makes present the one and same sacrifice of Christ in the here and now behind the signs of bread and wine (cf. CCC 1366-1367). Therefore, the sacrifice of the Mass is not a re-crucifixion of Jesus.
But the question remains: Is this theological construct biblical? The answer is yes! The author of Hebrews describes Jesus as “a minister in the sanctuary and the true tent which is set up not by man but by the Lord” (Heb. 8:2). In other words, Jesus’ priestly ministry continues forever in the heavenly realm (cf. Heb. 7:25). Now, because “every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices” (Heb. 8:3a) “it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer” (Heb. 8:3b).
What does Christ offer to the Father in the heavenly sanctuary as high priest? The offering cannot be anything less than his sacrifice on the cross, since that was his definitive priestly act. Therefore, the Bible blueprint reveals the one and same sacrifice of Christ on the cross being made present in the heavenly sanctuary in an unbloody manner. Such a conclusion is also supported by the fact that St. John describes Jesus appearing in the heavenly sanctuary as a slain lamb (cf. Rev. 5:6).
Thus the crucifixion of Jesus Christ is forever made present before the Father and is not restricted to time and space. Consequently, that same sacrifice can be made substantially present in the here and now in an unbloody manner every time the faithful liturgically remember the sacrifice of Christ in the anamnesis.
So, in conclusion, embedded in the sacred pages of God’s divine word is a blueprint with which God’s holy people, the Church, can construct a form of worship that is truly pleasing to the Lord. The Mass and the Bible are inseparable, and together they orient the Catholic faithful toward the destiny to which all humans are called: heaven.

someone said : "Jesus says, in the Bible, not to call anyone father except your Father in Heaven."
But, here Jesus, speaks about self-proclamed "religiuos" persons not about the priests. Because a priest is consacrated by a BISHOP, in fact by JESUS-CHRIST himself !! - So, we MUST call indeed a priest : Father.

I hope him that he is a TRUE PERFECT SAINT to enter Heaven. Because if you are NOT predestinated to heaven You should believe the Mercy of GOD and the PURGATORY. Because, following the GOSPEL : NO ONE can enter into the Heaven with his/her sins.

In relation to a comment, I would say, to me, that it is not Scripture or the Bible that binds us to Jesus. But first the WORD. The CROSS. THE LITURGY. THE SACRAMENTS. THE HEART OF MAN. THE EUCHARIST. PERSONAL PRAYER. FAITH, HOPE AND CHARITY AND THEN THE SCRIPTURES. If one reverses the GOSPEL then one becomes like a Pharisee whom Jesus himself fought against.
