    Best JCS ever! And Tim's analysis of Judas' role is spot on. Without Judas there would be no crucifixion/resurrection. And then to commit the double crimes of betrayal and suicide when he was just a poor sap in God's plan? I was 19 in 1970 and I can't say this is what drove me from the church, but when I talked to priests they had nothing, and JCS, while providing no answers, sure reinforced my questions.

      I'm not Catholic, but the Protestant answer that I always got (and truly believe) was that it's very clear and stressed in the Bible that God gave us free will. Judas had all the same chances, but he hardened his heart and betrayed Jesus. He wasn't just "some poor sap in God's plan" he did it on his own accord (despite the lyrics in "Damned for All Time" lol).. God knew what would happen, but He let it because it would free the world. It's not like God couldn't have done something, it's that He let us have free will and it hurts Him deeply when we turn away but He allows it to happen so we can have free will.. hope this answered some unanswered questions, and if you have any more just let me know👌🏻👌🏻❤️❤️

      JCS is the best version of the story. For all the drama of it (from the medium) it is the most plausible version of the story that best captures the proper human aspects of the story, particularly Judas.

    "What is it like performing something that is at adds with your worldview?"
    What kind of question is that? I understand wanting to get Tim's particular perspective, but the whole point of acting is to, at times, portray stories and characters who aren't like you. And Tim's absolutely right: The show doesn't lean one way or another, towards Christianity or against it, and that's what makes it so brilliant. The audience, like the characters, are left to react and decide for themselves what the tale means.

    • @AliciaNyblade
      @AliciaNyblade Před 3 lety +4

      @Oh Wait Oh, okay. I thought the interviewer was asking it like, "How could you, an atheist, possibly take part in a musical about religion and do it so well?! That's just crazy!"

    • @AliciaNyblade
      @AliciaNyblade Před 3 lety +3

      @Oh Wait Oh, that makes sense. I'm not atheist myself--I'm Wiccan, actually--but what I do share in common with atheists is having a critical eye of organized religion. Now, if people of like-mindedness in terms of their faith want to chill out together, I have no issue with that (I enjoy it myself), but once it starts getting too hierarchical, then I start to raise my eyebrows and back away.
      Yes, I know "Superstar" was hugely controversial for its time, and still is in some circles, and that's why I've always loved it, both growing up Christian and now as a Wiccan: It can be considered a religious piece, but it doesn't focus on religion or being preachy and instead tells deeply human stories that everybody can relate to and appreciate. If religions are going to have proselytizing as a thing (mine doesn't, but Christianity can and does in some denominations), they should take that approach of relating to people on a human level instead of the popular tactic of, "Believe what I believe or suffer eternally after death for it!"

So I did. Now I'm almost obsessed, and I LOVE Minchin's take on this story. I'm a huge fan of the musical. And this production is easily my favorite out of any I've ever seen. It's magnificently human. It's dirty, and messy, and complex in a way I think most other productions miss. In this telling of the story, Jesus really *is* the weakest link (the character; not the actor). Tim clearly gets that. He's stinkin' brilliant (And Mel really did smash it, didn't she?).

    • @Clotho42
      @Clotho42 Před 8 lety +5

      Judas wasn't saying to capitulate to everything the Romans said, but to be aware that they could quite easily screw them over, personally, religiously, as a movement and as a whole nation if they were pissed off enough. And also, he was making the point that their mission, their purpose, their message was being lost in a tidal wave of messianic worship and that even Jesus was starting to be pulled along too and was starting to believe he was the actual son of God when prior to that point, he'd never mentioned that, hey, by the way, I'm God, come kiss my feet. He'd only ever represented himself as a messenger of his interpretation of what he thought good Jews should be doing and thinking.
      And to be fair, Jesus was a bit whiny in the Bible too as well as the show... between them both, we have the apparent son of the God of the Bible cursing a tree for not fruiting out of season just because he wanted a snack... Complaining and grumbling at his disciplines for not necessarily getting his mysterious rambling parables... Playing one off against the other ("You're my favourite, but I won't show you what I showed Peter")... Complaining about them being stupid, thick and slow... and truly not understanding that by conducting himself in certain ways or cuddling up with a prostitute, could undermine all the work they were trying to do (even though in reality there's zero evidence Mary was a prostitute, that was a rumour spread by the men controlling the contents of the Bible and church doctrine)... Shoving Judas to the floor after screaming at him for doing something that - if Jesus was actually the Messiah - he knew was preordained by God in order to further his cause and fulfill the supposed prophecy of his resurrection (in other words, Judas had no way out of doing it because God said so)... After screaming at his most devoted followers and throwing one across the garden for not actually doing anything yet and going off on his own, he then expects them to sit up with him - specifically asking the one he physically threw...
      And then to top things off, Judas ends up being apparently condemned to hell for doing what God planned him to do, in the first place!
      So honestly, I think it was a fair thing to describe JCS Jesus (and even the Bible Jesus to some extent) as being whiny. ;-)
