In this episode, Did You Know Gaming takes a look at the inner workings and facts surrounding Sega's Sonic Glitches! In this video we cover glitches in Sonic games all the way from the original Sonic The Hedgehog up to the infamous Sonic 06 and Sonic Boom games. Through our analysis of Sonic glitches, the gameplay and beta builds attached to them, we hope to show some of the more interesting facts from Sonic glitches and have their history explained.

That thumbnail will forever haunt my dreams.
Learning that the first game was meant to have a "Press Start" text and doesn't is like realizing the signs where already there for the catastrophes to come, we just didn't now it was staring us right in the face.
I really enjoyed this video just because the explanations of each glitch were so in depth and accurate, especially near the beginning. As fun as glitches are to see, sometimes it's more fun learning why something occurs.

As soon as you mentioned Sonic Boom while talking about bugs, I immediately thought of the bug Game Grumps used. I couldn't stop laughing once I saw you used the footage.
There was one time i was playing Sonic Adventure HD on Xbox 360. I was playing as Knuckles on Lost World, i collected 2 emerald pieces and was looking for the last one. I was climbing the wall on a part that the camera didn't like so it started to glitch out and eventually clipped me outside of the level space. I jumped off the wall and ended up at the end of Sonic's version of Lost World with an animal capsule. It was so weird and i thought it was hilarious, it was the only major glitch i found in Sonic Adventure so far.
This video really BUGS me.

0:40 I vaguely remember a similar situation in Sonic 2, where the running-in-place-upside-down glitch in Aquatic Ruin Zone was passed off as a feature. Something along the lines of "can you find the mysterious spot where gravity is flipped?"

It took me a while to figure out how that bit of misinformation snuck in there, especially since no one bothered to link the Sonic Retro page the video paraphrased with the rest of the sources (info.sonicretro.org/Ashura). Don't they teach kids in school to not believe everything they see on openly-editable wikis?
Anyway, 'Sprite Status Table' refers to a single object's RAM. The thing that _actually_ stores sprite information is the Sprite Attribute Table buffer. Figuring this out is literally as easy as Googling 'Sprite Status Table' and looking at the first result. If looking at the same wiki that was blatantly wrong earlier doesn't tickle your fancy, then look at one of Yuji Naka's patents: patents.google.com/patent/US5411272A/en.
There's a fun little history to that bug. In Sonic 1, it was impossible to overflow the SAT buffer, but they broke it in Sonic 2 with a goofy optimisation. To mask it, the devs put 128 bytes of padding after the table, so if it overflowed then nothing important would be overwritten. The problem is, the waterfall sprite is so big that it overflows the padding as well, going straight into the Colour RAM buffer.
Anyway, point is, a show all about facts paraphrasing an incorrect wiki page without doing any fact-checking, and then not even citing the flipping thing, is kind of taking the piss.

I'm pretty sure i remember Ian Flynn say that both Ashura and Wetnia were partial inspirations for characters in the old Sonic comic.

I think it is just fascination HOW broken it can get and all the stuff you can do, it's honestly a marvel I can't get enough of, like The Room, every one has said everything about it, but its still fascinating.

Time of flight in Sonic Heroes is limited. But if you rotate the camera during the flight, you will not fall until you stop using camera arrows.

WOW... making that truck go in reverse is the craziest thing Ive ever seen. But if anyone has seen the GDQ of Sonic Adventure, it is by far the most fun Any% speed run I've ever seen.
Every Game has glitches no matter how good it is
but when the glitches are consistent e.g sonic 06 you know it is of poor quality.
The important distinction is how many of those glitches there are.
There's a world of difference between a Sonic game or a Bethesda game and a Nintendo game.

Because Bethesda games are pretty much the same. With the same glitches. Nintendo games too. (Mario, Zelda, Not 2nd parties). Sonic is made by sonic team, that works for sega. Sonic Team only makes sonic games so its fair to compare it to them.

Neo Machine Sonic's history has certainly been up and down and all-around.
However, glitches are not unique to the Sonic series, and not all of the titles suffer from bad game design. I would actually argue that the majority of games are quite good!

Did you know that in Sonic 06 the purple gem actually allows you to jump infinitely, allowing you to easily skip levels by practically flying over the whole stage. Also, the cyan gem not having a limit to skip some parts of a level by constantly teleporting.
