We laughed so hard it hurt! This is just the type of dark comedy we love, let us know some other comedies we should check out!

There aren't really any meandering plotlines that go nowhere in Fargo. On the surface, Marge meeting up with Mike, an old friend from school seems to be apropos of nothing but the important payoff from that scene comes later when Marge gets a phone call from another friend who tells her that everything Mike told Marge is a lie and that Mike is actually a stalker. She had been disarmed by Mike's Midwest chirpy "you betcha" demeanor, as are most viewers of the film. Immediately thereafter, Marge suspects that similarly chirpy Jerry has also been lying to her and so she reconfronts him. This time he bolts under the pressure, confirming his guilt. Really good police instincts from Marge.
The flaw in that theory is that Marge has been extraordinary to that point. And the first interview was massively suspicious, if only for comedic effect. What we're meant to believe then, is that Marge couldn't figure out how utterly incompetent Jerry was. Not buying it, she's too smart. The audience, on the other hand, may have needed some help.

What's really impressive about this movie is how it can be so funny and so tragic at the same time. Like the scene where Jean gets kidnapped. The way the kidnappers bungle through the whole thing paired with Jean's over the top reactions is hilarious. But their brutality and Jean's terror are so believable it's also horrifying.
I'm more disturbed when I see reactors not laugh at all during the entire movie, I've seen a ton of my favorite reactors completely miss the humor in this movie and act as if it's some gritty crime thriller, it's ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS.

The Mike Yanagita scene is important because when Marge finds out he was lying about the whole thing she realizes how well people can lie. So she goes back to see Jerry.
Cop Lady is Frances McDormand, who won the Best Actress Oscar for this, and for Three Billboards, and for Nomadland, which ups her over Meryl Streep (three acting Oscars also, but one is for Supporting Actress). She's been married to Joel Coen Brother for years and years, and she's been in a bunch of Coen Brothers movies, through this one and their first one, Blood Simple, are the only ones where she plays the lead.
She's a lead in "Burn After Reading".

They actually told you fairly early on what Jerry needed the money for. He's been sneaking little bits here and there at work, and it caught up with him. That guy on the phone, wanting those serial numbers, because something didn't calculate right for him. Jerry sent him an unreadable fax, to stall for time, and the guy called to tell him that he still need a readable copy of those numbers.
I think the question was rather... was trying to fix the phony financing problem the reason for needing money, or was it a prior scam to get money for an original debt.
Three hundred twenty thousand isn't sneaking a little bit here and there. And they never say what he spent the money on.

It was an excellent performance but that year i thought the winner should have been Emily Watson in Breaking The Waves
she stole the show. family members will slip the the occasional "you betch ya" and "oh geese" into our conversations in honor of Margie.

A minor point at 20:43 ;) Carl's Jr. is the Western US name for Hardee's, which is primarily in the Eastern/Midwestern US. So most of the US is familiar with Hardee's while Carl's Jr. is far less known. They were two separate fast food companies that merged in 1997. The Hardee's and Carl's Jr. names remain separate to this day even though their menu's are nearly identical.
Oh, some more info. The scene at the restaurant with the cheerful hostess asking how everything was, is real enough for me. I spent a year in Minot, ND one week (yes, I wrote that intentionally like that --- a week there felt like a year LOL). During that week, I ate breakfast at a small diner before going to work at Minot AFB (I was on work travel from California), and a young little hostess which could probably be this actress' sister (they looked and acted so similar), asked me in a cheerful smiling voice how everything was with my meal. I saw this movie several years after that, and this scene cracked me up because I was thinking "yup, happened almost exactly the same way to me."
That part where he asks how she is doing she just tilts her head and gives a blank stare was one of the biggest laughs for me, also the way they cut to the next scene was totally comedic.
O Brother Where Art Thou is another gem from the Coen Brothers. It's a must see, IMHO.
[on how she got the part in Fargo (1996)] "The fact that I'm sleeping with the director may have something to do with it." Frances McDormand won the oscar for her role as Marge, she is married to Joel Coen. She is good in Mississippi Burning also.

I love the way the humor is not really "in your face" funny -- it's more casual and matter-of-fact. No one is trying to be funny -- it's just ridiculous and/or dark. Good stuff. Great reaction. Thanks for this.
That's a great way to put it. I think it's because their stuff feels very grounded even when ridiculous stuff it going on.
My favorite bit of trivia from this movie and can't imagine anybody else playing Jerry:
William H. Macy begged the directors for the role of Jerry Lundegaard. He did two readings for the part, and became convinced he was the best man for the role. When the Coens (Joel Coen & Ethan Coen) didn't get back to him, he flew to New York (where they were starting production) and said, "I'm very, very worried that you are going to screw up this movie by giving this role to somebody else. It's my role, and I'll shoot your dogs if you don't give it to me." He was joking, of course.

One of the great masterworks by our greatest living filmmakers. One way to look at this? It's like "No Country for Old Men", except done by fools, whereas in the later movie everyone's pretty clever. Also, I subbed because you included little bits that makes the movie special in the first place. Old Bill Diehl at Whatever-Federal Bank. Wait, wasn't he at NorthStar? 🤣
And then he's just about to get in an argument right after he says that but then the scene just plows ahead.... so freaking funny!
Don't confuse the absurdism of the plot with painting characters as fools. The examples of significant events being regarded with indifference, and even callous disdain, while people seemed to carry on as normal, eating, shopping. The characters are rich with quirks and oddities you find in people everywhere you go. This had the juxtaposition of the hyper-polite, wholesome stereotype vs the truly dark motive of the husband and how it goes off the rails. Then insert Marge and Norm, tender, sweet people, with the tough-minded, tender-hearted Marge out to solve the case.
I don't see fools in this movie. I see "normal" people trying to pull off a crime and having it turn out as it normally does...with people making mistakes that lead the cops right to them. 😊
Out of all the reactions to the movie I've seen, this might be my top one, because you guys really do appreciate every subtle bit of comedy that comes from the absurdity of the situations, whereas other channels tend to take the movie more at face value. I mean, it's a pretty grim tale on the surface of course, but the way the events play out combined with the dialogue and the unforgettable Midwestern mannerisms makes Fargo quite an entertaining experience

This movie is my top 10. Living here in Minnesota, I have heard that accent, of course it is exaggerated. I can't believe you haven't heard of Hardee's..lol. They are in the midwest, the south . Now the have merged with Carl Jr's a California chain. Great Reaction.

@First City Views Hardees and Carl Jr's are average fast food burger joints. But better than McDonald's imo.
Gotcha, we live on a tiny island in Southeast Alaska, we have a McDonald's and a barely functioning Subway and that's it so we are used to all fast food being terrible, I'm always curious about chains I've never heard of.

You guys helped figure out what is so special about Fargo. The Coen Brothers excel at capturing very specific people and places, in a way most movies never bother to sort out. Generic action heroes that could be played by just about any actor? Absolutely not. And as you point out, this movie would simply not be the same if it took place in California. Most Coen Brothers movies are about capturing a specific place and the kinds of characters who live there. My Top 5 Coen Brothers movies are (in no order) Fargo, No Country For Old Men, Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, and Intolerable Cruelty. (That last one is unjustly maligned and forgotten!) All of these movies capture very specific characters in a very specific slice of America. If you like Fargo's dark humor, then you'll like Raising Arizona and Intolerable Cruelty. The Big Lebowski is also comedic, but also kind of a film noir. You can't go wrong with any of them!
I think Big Labowski is one of the next ones we will check out, always wanted to watch it, No Country for old men is one of my favorites.
William H Macy's character wanted the money so he could buy that 40 acres of land mentioned earlier in the movie to start his own dealership.
Hardees in the eastern half of the US is what you probably call Carl's Jr. Same restaurant chain overall, but there's an east/west split on the ownership of the company hence the different names.
I always thought that 40 acres was just a lie and he was going to pocket the money himself, that's why he wanted to be the "intermediary"

If you haven't seen it, you should see "Something about Mary". That is funny as heck also. My bad, it was the Farley brothers. Hardee's was actually started in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. It is a small town.
Absolute Dark Surreal Comedy Genius! The unexpectedness of this movie blew my mind! The TV Fargo is also one of my all time faves! Utter brilliance!👏👍🙏

They said that since The Coen Brothers were raised in the Midwest that they thought since they've had big snow winters in the past that filming in Minnesota in the winter was going to be perfect for getting the bleak winter shot, but unfortunately they had a mild winter that year so they had to fill some of the locations with snow from a snow-making machine.
Interesting, you could definitely tell it was super cold on some of the days they filmed.

The multi-award winning actor who plays Margie is Francis McDormand who by the way is married to one of rhe Coen brothers and is in all their movies. She won the Oscar for her performance in this movie.

yes, its a thoroughly enjoyable film. and the humor is reality based not absurdist which gives the film an aire of authenticity. i kinda link this film with "the usual suspects." both released close to each other, with ensemble casts, about an intense crime drama sprinkled with related humour.
the main thing wrong with this film is that the coen bros falsely claimed it be based upon "true events." THAT WAS AN ACT FRAUD! and a completely unnecassary fraud to boot. the movie is wonderful as it is. a completely charming and intense piece of fiction. why misrepresent it as a "true story?" what on earth were they thinking?

Great Performances By Everyone In This Movie 👍
Fun fact: The Coen brothers also edit their films under an alias. You should definitely check out "Blood Simple", their very first film, which shows how they started their habit of noir-style plots where things go very wrong. There's even a scene in it which is basically duplicated in this film. It's also Frances McDormand's first film and where she met Joel Coen, which led to them getting married a few years later (and they're still married). So many of their films are just great, especially the earlier ones, up through probably "True Grit"? While "No Country for Old Men" is my current favorite film of all time, I actually think "Barton Fink" is my actual favorite Coen brothers movie. Great performances by John Turturro and John Goodman, both of whom star in so many of their other movies.

Hey, just found your channel! You guys are so much fun! And I think this was a great match for you guys! I've never seen any reactors laugh at ALL the "jokes". It's a very dark comedy! But you didn't miss anything! "Accordion King"! You guys really "got it". The two movies in their catalog that are closest to this, I'm DYING for you to see now: their second movie RAISING ARIZONA, and their first BLOOD SIMPLE. Their second movie is HILARIOUS and super brilliant and i think you guys would also just do a fantastic job with"Raising Arizona", with a young Nicholas Cage and Holly Hunter. One of their best movies, definitely hilarious and one of a kind (like this one!). That's RIGHT up your alley, trust me. Also their first movie, "Blood Simple" is fantastic, brilliant, and put them on the map and doesn't have nearly enough reactions for! They predate Tarantino. "Blood Simple" is 1984 and was a HUGE inspiration to both Tarantino and the 90s "indie" movement. In the 80s, if you were like me and you hated the dopey blockbusters, all you had was stuff like Coen Brothers, David Lynch, Woody Allen, 80s Scorsese, 80s Coppola, some early stuff from Demme or Van Zant, etc. "Raising Arizona" is right up your alley.....and it's also a short movie! GREAT REACTION. You guys are a great reactor team!!!
PS: Two more: No one has done David Lynch's "Wild At Heart" yet, which again is a bizarre, wild, hilarious, demented, fun movie. And there are only a few reactions for his "Blue Velvet", one of the most notorious and groundbreaking movies of the 80s. I think you guys would KILL on "Wild At Heart"! Other movies from this period that don't have nearly enough reactions: Scorsese's "The King Of Comedy" (beyond brilliant and highly topical to today) and "Cape Fear" (huge suspense film of the 90s, only one reaction so far). Also his 1985 movie "After Hours" is WILD and demented and there are only two reactions for it so far, even though it's a beloved movie, one of the wildest of the 80s. And lastly: "Boogie Nights" (from 1998) which is a party and a half, starring EVERYBODY you ever heard of, lol. Wes Anderson's "The Royal Tenenbaums" is outstanding. "Dazed And Confused" from 1994, would LOVE to see your reactions to that one! Also the movie "Dazed And Confused" is almost a sort of cultural sequel" to: George Lucas' "American Graffiti". (both are youth culture movies that take place one night: the first on the eve of the 60s, last day of summer 1962.....and then last day of school 1976. The elephant in the room: the 60s themselves which you never see! But they are acutely felt in both films! Ok enough from me! LOVE your budding reaction channel!
PSS: And "Network"! (1976) Wild media satire, even more relevant to today than it was when it was made!

Actually it was particularly warm when they filmed it. So they did have to put fake snow everywhere.
No Country for Old Men is definitely more of an outlier in the Coen Brothers' body of work as far as tone is concerned. Fargo hits a lot closer to their usual MO when it comes to quirky characters and writing style. If you dig this as a comedy, I'd definitely recommend any of the following:
The Big Lebowski
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Burn After Reading
Raising Arizona
Barton Fink
A Serious Man
Haven't seen any of them, I think Big Lebowski is next on the list.
Fargo, Raising Arizona, Hudsucker Proxy, No Country for Old Men and Big Lebowski are my favorite Coen brothers movies. I can watch them all over and over.

Have you seen Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom"? It has that great scene style and dry humor in The Grand Budapest Hotel. It also has the Marge Gunderson actress (Frances McDormand) in a fun character part, but sadly not a ton of screen time. I think she is part of the lawyer couple, who are a real hoot. All big names in that movie, very surprising.
We LOVED Moonrise Kingdom! Still need to watch Grand Budapest, we'll probably do it on the channel.

Also, Memento is a whole other vibe from this. It's a really good mind-bender. No comedy in it.
I don't know where I got it in my head that Momento was a Coen movie but I've thought that for years LOL.

We've had a lot of requests for Miller's Crossing too, not that it's a comedy but it seems to be a fan favorite with the Coen fans.
@@firstcityviews Yes; also there is a not so overtly humorous film called "A Serious Man". Like all Coen brothers movies it is somewhat quirky ( It stars Simon Helberg; Woolowitz from The Big Bang Theory); but in my humble opinion not as good as the others.

Coen Bros were doing dark, violent, funny noir movies simce 1984's Blood Simple. If anything, Quentin took a page from the Coen's book

You guys should watch some Paul Thomas Anderson films, he is in competition with these guys as the top US filmmaker of the past 30 years.There's a lot of European influence on these American directors, as well as film noir from the 40's to 60's. Check out some Jean Pierre Melville!

Part of it was that I was very aware of the infamous wood chipper scene so the second I heard the machine running I knew what was coming.

i don't consider this a comedy, but it has lots of funny moments. lots. I also recommend The Big Lebowski, Miller's Crossing, and in Bruges. there are zero reactions to Miller's Crossing, it's a great movie. I will definitely subscribe if you watch Miller's Crossing. just kidding, I already subscribed. 🙂

He was also in the Dawn of the Dead remake, that's why he looked so familiar to me but I couldn't put my finger on it.
My favorite movies are the ones with lots of deep character actors. The Princess Bride, Fargo, Moonrise Kingdom and other movies that have really caught my attention tend to have really strong actors playing these incredibly specific parts and with great lines that are perfect for sound bites and ring tones and such.

i'm glad you have a sense a humour but you laughed at every tragedy in this movie. i mean, "schindler's list" had its humor but would you laugh all the way through it?
the main thing wrong with this film is that the coen bros falsely claimed it be based upon "true events." THAT WAS AN ACT FRAUD! and a completely unnecassary fraud to boot. the movie is wonderful as it is. a completely charming and intense piece of fiction. why misrepresent it as a "true story?" what on earth were they thinking?
What tragedy? Everything that was dark and brutal about this movie was made even funnier when juxtaposed over the ridiculous setting and characters, I also think the "true story" part was just a weird joke, not meant to fool anyone.
@@firstcityviews ... the whole movie was a tragedy. didn't you get it? that was the whole point of the sheriff's last monologue. that was the point of seeing that ending arrest at the motel. there was nothing funny about those things.
also, the coen bros passed this off as "based on true events." critics and audiences believed it was based on true events. there were reports of people who went looking for the lost money. it only came out later that was a lie. committing fraud is no joke, my friend.
anyway, i'm glad you liked the film. although you liked it for completely different reasons than i did. cheers to the art of filmmaking!
Schindler's List has funny parts??? No way dude. Your argument makes no sense. Coen Brothers always have quirky, funny dark scenes going on with mishaps and violence. You can't compare Schindler's List and Fargo.
Unlike you, I still would have found lots of laughs even without those accents. I think the dialogue is great.
Absolutely, the accent is just the gravy on top. My wife's family is from Wisconsin so we started laughing almost immediately.

Popping in your enlargement is really bigtime distracting. We hear you and see you just fine in the smaller circle. Also, your volume is much too high. If your voice is turned down to normal, then we can't hear the movie voices.
Thanks for your feedback, cutting to us is a way to keep the video from getting copyright claimed, if you pay attention you'll notice all reactors do it. This was also one of our first reactions, if you watch some of our newer vids you won't find those audio issues.

@@firstcityviews Well, this movie isn't really intended as a comedy. Breaking out in laughter when the trooper's head is destroyed isn't funny. It wasn't intended to be funny. I think you missed the point.
Laughter is a common way to deal with uncomfortable situations, and it absolutely is a comedy, in fact it had some of the funniest moments I've ever seen in a movie, I think you may have missed the point...
Side note: I actually didn't laugh when the trooper was shot, I just said "oh brutal, that came out of nowhere". So what are you even on about?
there is nothing really to laugh at in this film maybe a smile here and there from the local language differences but that is it- this NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT A GODDAMNED COMEDY -quirky but not funny AT ALL at all at all......

This movie is very definition of dark humor. I laughed at quite a few scenes in the movie.
@@coxmosia1 Agreed. I think there is a very small but vocal group of viewers that has zero grasp on the concept of dark humor. Our Jojo Rabbit video has faced similar criticism from people trying to claim that it isn't a comedy and isn't funny in the slightest, THAT IS ABSURD, it literally has a cartoon version of Hitler skipping around the screen like a maniac. I LOVE dark humor, the darker the better.
