I have to also chime in this story in support of groomers: I took my first Saint to the same groomer for 7 years, and he groomed my maltipoo too, loved him so much. When my first Saint died, at the next appointment for my Maltipoo, I was caught off guard when I walked in to the salon and immediately was hit with a wave of grief for my Moose who I had taken there so many times, who they treated so tenderly when his hips went bad and he couldn't stand much, and I started crying. My groomer and two of the other staff members rushed over and embraced me in a circle hug and we all cried together for a minute. I live by myself and had to put my dog down by myself, and they comforted me like family and I'll never forget it. That they cared for my pain, and cared for my dog that much, just so touching.

My golden retriever only growled once in her life at strangers. This was a dog who would happily jump in the car with strangers to go for a ride and loved everyone she met except these two men who showed up in my yard walking up to my front door. It was spring, the front door was open but the storm door was locked. I had never heard that noise come out her before. I saw what she was growling out, yelled at them to leave my property then promptly shut and locked all doors and windows. She patrolled the house for about 20 minutes and then settled down to deposit more hair balls in various rooms. I had always she would escort any burglars around the house gladly but with these guys she was going to rip a throat out. She never did that again in her 13 yrs. Just growled that one time. I’m glad I listened to her instead of punishing her.

I had a Labrador Retriever growing up who was the exact same way, except for one single time. We were on a long road trip driving half way across the country, and I had stopped at a rest stop in the middle of the night to give him a potty break. We were walking around in the grass when suddenly he snapped to attention, bolted to the end of his leash, and started snarling at some guy who was about 6 feet away from us. I instinctively apologized, but the guy just walked away without saying anything.
Looking back on it, he was almost certainly trying to mug me. I was 10-15 feet away from any walking path. He had no reason to be that close to me. Had my dog not been paying attention, I could be dead.

The worst part, is that barely any of what parents are paying goes to the people actually working with the children, most of the cost is just going into the pockets of the owners and administrators. I mean, the owners deserve a living wage too for operating the service (assuming they're owner-operators who work in their own center - if they're hiring administrators and not even regularly showing up themselves, well, then they obviously aren't doing any work to pay themselves for), and I understand that there are operating expenses for a daycare besides staff salaries, but you guys, the actual daycare teachers, should be paid a lot more and the cost of the service should reflect the cost to pay you guys that wage, rather than the cost of lining the owner's pockets.

A physically or mentally tasking job should pay more to cover things like idk the physical and mental therapy that they require as well as allowing them to live comfortably. And since a lot of these jobs involve some not-very-nice things that a lot of people don't want to do on their own (for example, having to directly clean a dog's ass in the case of a groomer) then they are a high demand service, which allows them to charge more. As someone that has and occasional still does groom my own dog I can say this: why are groomers rates the way they are? Cause it's fricken worth it! Koda is a pain in the butt to groom and I know it, the fact groomers greet you at drop off and pick up with a smile and usually only kind words is a testament to their patience as professionals.

I was terrified of dogs when I was a child, so my aunt introduced her friend's old golden retriever to me to help. She was the sweetest dog. People have a hard time realizing that stuff they do to relax after work for 1 or 2 hours is on a whole other level than doing the same activity professionally for several hours every day. I'm an artist/designer and I can't count the times people wanted free shit from me because "drawing is just a hobby". I work as a tattoo artist now which is one of the few art related professions people actually understand the prices and even here I have clients who are like "can you do a Design for me and THEN I see if I want an appointment?" like.... I'm not gifting you hours of my labour lol. The audacity of some people is unreal sometimes.

@@cfol4437 yeah, it's different when you commission the artist for a tattoo design and pay them up front (or down payment plus then the rest after completion but too many times people try to pull out after the piece is finished so I'm for the paying in full up front), and then determine if you want to follow through on an appointment (with the artist, of course, keeping the rights to the design until the tattoo is actually done; or the piece is bought outright at an appropriate xD price.)
But asking for basically a free commission that you can take anywhere to any artist is just skeevy and selfish. Like as much as I want tattoos right now a) I know I can't afford it (funemployment isn't fun lmao) and b) I would like to find an artist who I can commission first before wasting their time by not booking an appointment if I chicken out. She is a saint and does a wonderful job on my three - they go into the van tail wagging, happy to see her, and come out looking, smelling, and feeling wonderful. She has great patience because I have a sitter, a licker, and an old girl who just belly flops on the table. Everyone expects everything to be free or cheap nowadays, regardless of the extreme amount of physical exertion that goes into the work they’re paying for. It’s stupid, unfair and frankly inhumane to expect someone to risk serious injury daily for mere pennies.

I love how you explain why it's expensive and necessary. Your commentary on the video is my favorite part. Thank you for all you do for the animals and to educate us. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I'm sure most appreciate the care, love and detail yall give to peoples pets, and it's easy to tell who are the good groomers and the careless ones.

I absolutely salute my pet groomers. When you observe the grooming staff at any salon, you will seldom see anyone still working past their 40's. It is a very physical job, especially with the large breed dogs.

When it comes to the rates I just have to remind myself that it's not going to be as cheap as going to get a haircut at first choice. But I will say watching your videos certainly educated me further on how difficult it can be.

Amen @Girl With The Dogs on the toll caring for pets takes. I own a dog walking and pet sitting business for 13+ years now. I love it, and I also feel it more and more in my body. Thank you for preaching. :-)

A friend's mother was a highly sought professional dog groomer, and he told me about how she retired early due to the physical toll grooming took on her. I didn't truly understand until I saw your videos.

Thank you for the explanation about your job. It is easy to think like you said, you play with puppies all day. But a deeper look at your videos shows the effort you put in. As well as the compassion and knowledge. Top notch.

I know the difficulties my groomer goes through with my dog... which is why she goes to a groomer! I always apologize profusely but they tell me she is well behaved. I guess it is different when I do it, plus she knows how to get her way with me.

Thank you for educating us pet owners, Vanessa! You have honestly changed my perception of groomers.
I’d never really stopped to consider what groomers go through - except for those occasions when I heard about small dogs getting their bones snapped while at the groomers and thinking my god what kind of a monster would do such a thing! But watching your videos has really opened my eyes to how such incidents can happen, and how much patience and care groomers put into their work 👍

I just wanted to say, THANK YOU! This video is a must for any pet owner who uses a groomer. My best friend is a pet groomer and a lot of times clients don’t understand the magnitude of some grooms. They can take a lot longer than others so they have to charge more. Grooming can be very difficult and challenging as well as very rewarding.

Not just against groomers, they sit at home also. It was so tough to wash my golden when I had one, especially after she had been playing in the mud LOL thank you for taking care of Luna
