Its like they've been put on Earth for us and boy we don't deserve them. I love dog breeds that are also used as working dogs Labs, goldens and springer spaniels all day long the very best breeds of dog this world has to offer.

I found that the best way to make my Golden Retriever actually like fireworks and thunderstorms was to act excited by the noise. Initially, she was terrified by both, but after I made it clear that they were fun, she began to enjoy them as well, barking back at the thunder and bouncing like a puppy at lightning.
Goldens pick up a surprisingly large amount of their behaviour and "opinions" about the world from their owners. Dogs, in general, have spent the last 15000 years, domesticating themselves, and are easily able to recognise human emotion, whereas we still struggle to recognise theirs.
Being people pleasers, Goldens are quite talented in this regard, but you need to put the work in, in order to train and socialise them, because modern human society is nothing like anything that any creature on the planet evolved to endure.

To prevent food protection make them sit and wait before serving them. We also put my pups food in a treat ball and he goes nuts flipping it over with his nose to get the treats out. Even picking it up and moving it when it gets stuck. That's what we did and it worked pretty well anyways.

basic fact: golden retrievers are very intelligent beings and know very well when you do something with good intention or not.
So, even when you do something they normally don't like very much, they still can be very tolerant and, to a certain degree, come to appreciate it (if there is good intention).

6:26 Ok, the thing you're missing here . . . when you train your puppy to allow interference during meal time . . . Yes, you get in there and take away their food, but only if you're going to put a nice treat on top for them. Take away the kibble, put a nice-sized piece of sausage on top and give it back to them. They'll quickly learn that they don't need to guard their bowl.

They are renowned for having a very soft "mouth" and love to play "biting" games where they will wrestle with their teeth around your arm but will not (deliberately) hurt you. The down side of this is that if you play this game with them they do not understand that it is not cool to also play it with others - especially children - who do not understand that they mean no harm and will usually become very frightened as a result.
No, they are not good apartment dogs.

There were times I remember he didn’t want to even walk far with me down the street. Lots of sleep. They grow out of it. He competes and does well now in agility, obedience, tracking and hunt tests. He is very active and fast. Be sure he is getting his regular puppy veterinary visits and give him the opportunities to exercise, I’m pretty sure it is a stage they go through.

I would take him outside every two hours (I’m retired) and immediately after waking up from a nap. Golden Retrievers hate flexible schedules...so true! All such amazing points that it took me 30 years of Goldens to understand. The only thing that I would add is to the grooming points. Over bathing a Golden is detrimental to their coat, which you did mention but the reason is this... their coats have a high amount of lanolin ( a natural oil that protects them in the water). It's that lanolin that gives them the stinky, hot Golden smell. Too many baths remove the lanolin and leaves them prone to more skin problems.
Goldens are highly intelligent, emotionally and otherwise. If you're young and active, this still is not necessarily the dog for you. Be willing to put in both the emotional and physical time. Whatever you're thinking, trust me, they've already out thought you:). Great video!!

    • @Mortagleus
      @Mortagleus Před rokem

Not all points are spot but most are. As a young pup he is right about yelling , but if you listen to a pups mom or grandmother you will hear a very stern talking to. Golden need to be train exactly as the older females Goldie's stern growly voice. Also a firm grab of the excess skin with control while doing the growly voice really works well when discipline is needed. When a pup is really not listening a small backhand on the rump works well, you don't cause any pain but it reminds them of when momma had to show them who's boss

We've had 6 retrievers in the last 14 years. 5 Goldens and 1 Flat Coat. So far, we've only had 1 Golden that you could call "sensitive". And that was just with loud noises. Except thunder for oddly. He was a rescue with some bad history. Our Flattie is sensitive to thunder and gun shots, but nothing else. Four of our Goldens were red, field line dogs, so that may have a lot of influence. The "Comet" looking, confirmation line dogs are over bred which lead to a lot of problems.

It is so amazing to see puppies moving in Mama's tummy when you shave her tummy! Also, it helps the puppies nurse easier after they are born. I just hope shaving her tummy is not detrimental though... not like giving her a complete shave.

We moved into a new home with a large pond. Our golden, went into the pond a was covered with green weeds from the pond the first day we moved in. He came around the corner, full of joy as he found the pond..(body swinging because of his tail movement, head up and smiling.. yes similing). My wife screamed "Oh my god No" as he was covered with green stuff. He did not eat for three days... best dog we have ever had...

I had a pup who was at least one quarter Golden. Her daddy was half and half Lab. I don't know her mixed Mom's composition. You could see the Goldie genetics in Lady. She was small
but she had the coat and the smile. When I potty trained her, I never scolded. I would say in
surprised voice,"What did you do?" Then I would reassure her it was ok and clean it up with no fuss. After a very short time, she started coming into the bathroom with me where there was a floor drain. She would always go when I did🤭so I would praise her and then wash it away. She learned that was her safe place if she couldn't get outside, like during a thunderstorm or something. As a result, it was a normal event for her and she never broke training in the 10 years I had her. I had actually given her to my husband when we separated because he really needed her. She was with him when he died suddenly and alone. Even tho he wasn't found for 24 hours, she held it. The police officer fed her and walked her. She stayed alone til I could get there the next day and she still held on. She was the most wonderful dog but I had to find her a more suitable home. She was used to space and started having trouble with the stairs, as did I. 3-4 times a day of steep steps was too much for two old ladies.

Not only were my goldens family dogs, they were hunting dogs as well. Gun breaking started early and small. First a a ‘loud’ pellet rifle, then a .22, and working up from there. They were always ready to go by 16 weeks. One of my girls was so excited about going hunting/shooting, she would drag the right hunting bag down the hall depending on which gun I picked up.

I'm on my 5th Golden and yellow lab mix I got this time from county pound. I always adopt from kill shelters. I have had 4 pure Golden's and 2 black labs and pug I've had. Since they was middle age or few years old from pound I only get them and love Emm for 8-9 years at most. But at least they had a really good and very healthy taken care of life with regular vet checks. I have two dogs right now cause my golden yellow lab mix needs to have a buddy so I got a beagle and terror mix. He has someone at home almost all the time cause my fiance does outside sakes so she works from home for 4 hours then goes out and meets customers and I work a job as a alcohol rep so I work from home as my office. We are 30 years old and if your not active don't get a golden retriever. I keep mine on a food schedule and he loves it once in morning and once in evening is the vets meal plan. And don't yell when they do something bad get them use to a kennel or crate where they can stand and move in it a good sized one rule of thumb I go by is three times size as dog and put him in there for naps when he sleeps and during meal times when he eats feed him in his kennel so when you mad at him you say kennel up he knows he in trouble but keep door open cause he knows it's also a place where he can go on his own to sleep nap or just go get away when they are stressed out or scared and they know when you tell them to go they in trouble lock door give them treat and let them sit for 15 mins. Golden's are like 5 year old kids if you treat them like one they will be happy. And please play with them like fetch for at least 2 hours a day once in morning and evening and don't play for 45 mins after each meal it can knot there stomach. Also if yours swims all day like mine does in pool you have to clean and dry inside of his ears with cuetips cause they get yeast infection in ears sign of that it hot fever on his ears and always shaking his head or rubbing ears on carpet. Only way to cure it is a cream from vet but I'm lucky to have a cool family Dr he writes me script of same thing for humans when they get yeast infection in their ears or rashes on skin and my insurance pays for it so it's free. There is alot of creams and meds that dogs need to get better and if it's a med you use all the time most of time there is a human version exact same thing and if it's non narcotic just ask your family Dr if he is cool to wite you a script so your insurance pays for it. My golden is very active I take him outside and play for hours long walks and long swims in the pool and the vet has him in hills prescription diet food for weight control and it's only 2 cups of food a day 1 in morning and 1 at night that's it cause this food is high in all protein and nutrients he needs in just one cup for each meal and it makes them feel full to. Make sure you have lots and lots of tennis balls out in open where he knows where he left them inside and out don't put Emm up leave Emm out they love to lay down and just squeeze the tennis balls in their mouth when stressed over storms or fireworks or just stressed from a bad day or bored. Also look on CZcams for brain excersise games where the golden has to think and figure a problem or solution on his own to get a tiny treat out of a little hole that opens when he does a certain thing. You can buy toys that are interactive learning and problem solving for dogs where you put treats in these different compartments and he has to make something move a certain way to get each treat. Or even a muffin pan and tennis balls is fun. Fill up ranoldom spots on muffin pan with one tiny training treat not all of the just two-4 spots then place tennis balls in over cup in the large muffin pan and with out training they will pick up only the tennis balls with treats under and leave rest. My lab and golden mix did it his first try so if my mix mutt golden can do those games your pure breed can do and there is games you buy to leave like four or five through out house and when he finds the game he will solve it on his own keeps mine busy all day alone if we got to leave him alone more then 4 hours. I watched him on cameras in my house and he solved all 5 games but did one game every 2 hours. Just CZcams diy brain games for golden or Amazon has ones you can buy they love the store bought ones and the home made ones but loved complicated store ones better

Had golden retrievers for over 30 years, but I am happier with them than with people.
I live in the UK. We feed our dogs wheat free food, 2 retrievers we had couldn't eat wheat, it would make them ill. The food is not grain free, it is just wheat free. We give them Harringtons dry dog food with tinned dog meat. We now check ingredients for all dog treats. We no longer have the retrievers that had problems with wheat as they died or were put to sleep at ages 12 and 14. Though our current 1 year old retriever is the great nephew to the one put to sleep at 12.
They all come to sit on my lap for a cuddle and are spoilt rotten, but not to their detriment.

When ever I say something like let's cut the fur, he goes crazy of happiness and runs to the closet where the cutters are kept and brings them to me and when we go outside he just automatically goes to lie on his back. And it's pretty much the same thing with cutting his nails and most of all brushing him.

    New Golden owner here.
I've had a few working breeds and a couple guarding breeds.
I never considered Goldens a working breed.
    For you new owners...
You essentially have a high end hunting dog.
    Weekly swims....no shampoo.
    They are a duck retriever.
Mine is good for most of the day in winter if it's 32 and above.
