    I had the same issue. No mic. Audio is muffled when you blow in at the mic. I use it for fishing and I think if you get it wet it may be possible that water may have seeped into the mic area. I used a hair blow dryer to make it hot and banged it lightly on a counter and it worked. My guess that mic might have seized up for it not to work. Hope this helps any of you.

    i took it apart for like 10times now =D Still haven't found what is cousing mic not to work, and there are no replacement parts anywhere to buy... and YI is not responding at all on this issue

      KiLLy yea same exact problem. You pretty much have to buy this on Amazon with the 3 year warranty.

    thank you for doing this. i wonder if we can just install a audio out? would it be as easy as soldering wires to the speaker conductors on the board?

      @heavyanemone2172 Před 4 lety

      Cool. I guess that will take too much space. I was thinking about installing a "Mic In" and use an Røde Mic instead, but this means to harm the housing of the unit. Better Use 48K and record the sound seperatly. Does someone had success with the syncronisation because of an perfect framerate?

    Hi Ste L. Very helpful video. Thanks for taking your time to take it apart and show us what we can expect. My sound has just gone out completely aswell.
    Xiaomi has just been telling me 'the audio would get fixed in a soon to come firmware update' for 7 months, until now. Last month my warranty expired and now they suddenly tell me it's not going to get resolved and that I have to pay 85 euro shipping and another 65 euro to get it fixed by them (which is almost the cost of a new one).
    First time dealing with Xiaomi, and it redefines the stereotype of chinese products and customer service...
    Now considering I no longer have warranty anyway, and in no way am going to pay 150 euro to get it fixed. What is my best option to fix it? I read in the comment below here that you managed to fix it by replacing the mic with the parts of another Yi 4k. Where do I get this? Or did you have to buy an entire new Yi? That would quite defeat the purpose.
    Also: on alot of other cheaper actioncams people DIY self create an audio jack which allows them to use an external microphone on their action cam. This would completely solve my (our) problems and even offer us better audio than replacing it with another Yi 4k mic.
    Thanks in advance.
    Aaron

      I had 2 of these units and I experimented by transferring the mic, but you're right...buying a new unit to do this defeats the purpose. So far I don't think anyone sells the mic as a part, the only solution I see is buying a broken/parts unit but it mentions the mic still works.
      In terms of hard wiring a mic, I don't see how one would get it to connect with the circuit board, but i'm no expert.
      The only thing i learned from this situation is don't trust Xioami and their warranty (buy it with 3rd party warranty)...and to avoid this issue entirely, ensure the unit does not over heat (i.e using it in the case to long or using it with timelapse in direct sunlight w/o proper air flow).....i think heat is the main cause of this hardware malfunction ... no amount of software update will fix this.

    • @SteU4IA
      @SteU4IA  Před 6 lety +1

      So looking at the mods with the older Yi models... it looks like the older mics were just soldered on with 2 wires... that won't work with this unit since it uses ribbon cables.

    I have the static voice issue from past 2, 3 years. God knows its been a while. That's why i haven't used it so often. Now a days I'm in China and maybe i get it fixed easily. So can you tell me the exact part which needed to be replaced. Because i searched AliExpress for YI 4k microphone/pcb and nothing comes up.

    . is there space available for place female jack inside yi4k body?

    • @SteU4IA

    My sound died completely too. I contacted Yi who told me because I bought the unit from Geekbuying dot com,and not them ,they were not honouring the warranty. Geekbuying said they would fix it(shudder) if I shipped it back to China but that would have cost 40. Some consolation in knowing I am not alone with this issue. I do notice,however,when opening clips in FCP,while there is no sound playing back ,there is a very faint wave form showing of levels. However even boosting the audio to the max gives hiss. Pity ,because the image is really good. And If I do a visual clap I can still sync to other cameras.

    • @SteU4IA
      @SteU4IA  Před 6 lety +2

      jasongy yes I did, the mic was totally defective. I suspect high heat causes some hardware issue. I figured this out by transplanting the mic hardware from another yi 4k.
      This camera definitely has QE issues related to heat, especially when used in a hot day in its housing.

      @@SteU4IA Mine died just after 10min of usage 3 days ago with no heat (-2° C outside, no case/housing) inside my truck. It was the left mic and I was able so save my videos by dropping the left channel of the audiostream. Fortunately, the right one was ok. Sent it back for refund to amazon after reading about yi customer support and got a Hero5 Black instead which is working fine so far. So I don't think it's caused by heat. It looks like a design flaw which is still not fixed after several years. Just cheap crap...

    • @SteU4IA
      @SteU4IA  Před 5 lety

      Interesting question. I don't have a solid answer but it is a touch screen camera. I don't know how much functionality you would have without it. I'm sure it will still power up as that's a hard button.

      @@SteU4IA Thank you mate, I appreciate your quick answer.. Since I'm struggling with sound on the 4k+ I am gathering information from every source I could get.. Even if the placement of the mics is a little different, this video showed me a path to get closer to the problem. But only a software solution could lower the gain on the recording mic.. It would be great to have an eqilizer, with input gain and clip/limiter.. To my mind my problem is the other way around, because I have a way too loud signal on the 4k+ and a distortion that makes any sound recording just garbage..

      @@k.skowronski175 interesting how the 4k+ is the complete opposite 😂. Wild attempt but I recall using one of those cheapo silicone wrapping cases on the 4k, and the silicone slightly sealed off the 2 top mics and muffled the noise a bit, have you tried that? Worse that can happen is you have a $2 silicone case haha.
