  • Precision and Jazz basses, account for probably 90% of the low frequencies you've heard on popular music in the last 50 years. They're great instruments. So why would you need any other bass? Because in that other 10% is where the truly unique tones are. It's where the next trendsetters live. Those outlier basses that, in the right hands, could influence musicians' and engineers' choices for the NEXT 50 years.
There are loads of great basses out there that fly under musicians' radar. Cory, the Little Guy with the Big Guitar, wants to show you a few that will prevent you from sounding like every other bass in every other song. He'll take a look at a couple of affordable Epiphones, the Newport, and the Firebird. Plus, a Fender Squire Classic Vibe '50s Precision with the original style non-split pickup. Then to a custom offering from Harper Custom Guitars - the Gravity 5-string active bass.
The moral of the story: Many of the players who helped define modern electric bass - Paul McCartney, John Entwhistle, Bootsy Collins, Jack Bruce, Chris Squire - didn't create their tones on a Precision or Jazz Bass. Don't be afraid to try something different.
