Martin Roars Through Open
Steve "Tennessee "Twister" Martin leveled a 240-man field of the nation's top professional and amateur bowlers, including runaway top-seeded Earl Anthony, 248-222, for the $21,000 first prize in the prestigious BPAA U.S. Open.
Martin, a 21-year-old right-hander from Kingsport, Tenn., qualified fifth for the stepladder TV finals but found the winning combination against Steve Brichta, Guppy Troup and Mike Aulby with games of 227, 234 and 221.
In the championship match, Anthony, who paced the tournament by 551 pins through 56 games at Bradley Bowl in Windsor Locks, Conn., fell behind with a split in the fifth frame and could not catch up as Martin won his second PBA title.

Both years the U.S. Open was held at Bradley Bowl Earl lapped the field and lost the title match. On the U.S Open shows the TV pair was 29-30, all other shows they would use 27-28.
It was a shame that he didn't win at least one of those two. The same thing happened to Mark Roth the next year in Houston. He lapped the field but bowled a terrible game against Marshall Holman for the title.

7:24 hall of famer bowler, but more importantly hall of fame human being Johnny Petraglia. A Vietnam vet ...shot 300 on tv...triple crown winner, had a very popular ball named after him. And the nicest guy ever

Wow! My sister and I were there that day. I remember feeling so bad for Steve Brichta after that 1st game.
No disrespect, but Steve Brichta carried about 2 or 3 shots that should have been splits!! The bowling gods giveth and the bowling gods taketh away.

@@scolley0616 Absolutely. You witnessed some of the Greatest ever. They didn't have all the Great equipment, and Bowling academies that are available today. They were some of the Pioneers.

I’ve been leaving this comment on any Anthony match I watch. As great as he was, can someone tell me how many second place finishes he had? Thanks!
He had 43 firsts and 43 seconds (before 2009 it was 41 firsts and 42 seconds, but the PBA then counted his two Masters wins. In the Masters, he had two first place finishes and one second place, so that ended up evening up his firsts vs seconds overall total.)

Looked like Columbia yellow dot. For that year most bowlers were using either the yellow dot or the LT-48.

Steve Martin bowled great. When his ball hit the 1-3 pocket did you notice that all ten pins went off the lane? Does anyone know why he did not become one of the greats? Did you also notice that Mrs. Martin was clapping for her husband's opponents when they got a strike? That is class. Thanks for the video.
That is class, but as a former bowler, i may clap for my Wife's opponent, but I'm hoping She or he chops every spare & gets pocket 9's and misses every spare!!! That is in my mind against any opponent. Some bowlers will trash talk their opponent. What bowler truly wants their opponent to carry in pocket in the 10th frame when the match is tied?
@@louiscsanko3673 None. I know exactly what you are talking about. Inside, you are hoping for a split on a crucial shot by your opponent.
@@kenyongray2615 Sorry for the late response. Absolutely, but you are correct about being classy. The bowlers who use trash talking are usually lacking in class. You can be a good sport and of course you are not wishing your opponent a double. Maybe a solid 8 pin, but you don't have to use trash talking or hostile tactics. The same bowlers that do that will eventually be hated.
@@louiscsanko3673 No problem. I was always taught by my Dad many years ago. Be gracious when you win and also be gracious when you lose. That was why I thought Mrs. Martin was great at clapping for everyone.

How is Brichta able to bowl in the tournament of champions if he doesn’t have a title?
do you have any bowling classics from 1983?
Could someone expain why 21 year old Mr. Martin needed to win the tournament to become reeligible for Firestone toc?
Back then there was only a field of 52 bowlers, it was possible if you didnt win the next year that would could be knocked out by a new first time winner who qualified for the Firestone. Every now and then they would announce who was on the bubble if there was a new champion. They guy on the bubble would lose his exemption to the TOC. These days the field is ooen to all former winners of the PBA.

I might have asked you before, but do you have a good copy of the 1980 Rolaids from Dick Weber Lanes? I had a good copy years ago, but it was on the same tape as the 1980 ARC Alameda County Open won by Warren Nelson. Warren and I bowled in the same league back then and I gave him the tape. The only copy of the Rolaids I have, I uploaded to my channel, but it's horrible. It was taken from a hand held video camera pointed at the TV screen and it runs faster than normal speed.
