Garden City Bowl, Garden City, N.Y., Mar 16-20, 1982
Cook "Crosses Up" Foes
Steve Cook mixed eight crossover strikes together with various pocket hits to roll 733 for three games and win his fifth PBA title in the $100,000 Long Island Open.
Cook got the best out of his most errant shots to average 242 during the championship round, including a 255-225 title-game win over Earl Anthony. Cook also defeated Pete Weber, 237-235, and Wayne Webb, 241-227, after Weber began with a 227-203 win over 1978 Long Island Open champ Johnny Petraglia.
Anthony, who won the annual Garden City tournament in 1979, 1980 and 1981, was going after a PBA record fourth straight victory. He gained the top-seeded position by 15 pins over Webb after taking the lead from Petraglia during the final day of match play.
