The only guy to have an official side chick without beef.
This comment needs to be at the top.
The story of Chris and Walnut is one of my favorites. The dedication Chris had in caring for Walnut really touched me. Since she became imprinted on humans and aggressive towards past mates, Walnut's life could have been lonely and monotonous - until Chris entered the picture. He saw Walnut as an individual with her own emotional and biological needs and desires, and I think that's the point where she changed her view of him, becoming receptive towards him. For him to do a mating dance with her and bring her nesting material, I think he went above and beyond what most people would have done. It's obvious to me that he truly cared about Walnut, and for that I'm grateful to him. She was a beautiful, expressive, intelligent and animated bird and I think she saw Chris as her loving mate. Thanks for the story! ❤
Such a sweet story. It's sad she was that confused, but in her head she finally got a partner to be happy with. It's always feels weird having an animal bond with you that way as a human. I had rescue chicken that bonded better with me than she did her own flock. Now she lives in my house 😂
Chickens have so much personality ❤ my sister has some as pets/for the eggs. They are sweet, smart, and hilarious. The chickens are also very social
I had chicken wich broke her leg when she was chick and now She always somehow gets away from her flock and she is just walking around us and stuff. Sadly she doesn't live anymore
Wasn't expecting to cry this morning but here we are!
man was seriously called chris *crow* and was surprised he got a bird wife
This story is kinda sad kinda funny. It’s sad Walnut’s parents were captured and put into captivity, but on the other hand it sounds like they were actually treated very well by their handlers.
It’s sad Walnut never understood how to bond with male cranes but she was fortunate enough to come across a human who was kind and knew exactly how to handle her. I’m glad they didn’t have to force her into inseminations because that’s very stressful on the animal!
I wonder if Chris has/had a wife and how she felt about him having to do this weird mating dance with a bird 5 times a day? 😂😂😂
i get that people see this situation as weird and sad, kind of funny in an absurd way, but it makes me happy too
walnut shouldn;t have been raised so closely with humans that she preferred them over other cranes
but since that damage was already done, i'm glad someone stepped up and cared for her the way she wanted that ALSO helped with conservation of her species.... that's really cool
I'll be honest this channel has got me thinking about genuinely getting into conservation if I ever can. I'm 25 already and I've always struggled with academic stuff due to mental health problems, but its been a dream to get into a scientific field.
Same. I am legally disabled but not in a way that I want to hold me back my entire life. Animals? I can do. People not so much. This is a beautiful and inspiring story.
I'm sure there are nonprofits who would love your help in the meantime to getting a stable career in your dream field! That's where I'd start looking, if you have the time and resources to be able to afford it.
same bro i am 26 in australia and currently pursuing a masters degree in tech but conservation is my passion you'll be surprised at how you can use your skills to help the passions you want to get into
Go for it. Humans suck, animals are so much more honest and pure, deserving of our help. Well, we actually have a responsibility to help them, because we are the reason so many of them are endangered. The greatest misfortune of human behavior is what is done to the countless billions, actually trillions, of animals that die either directly or indirectly by our actions. It's so sad when you really think about it. Hope you can find a pathway to get into conservation.
I’m in the exact same boat, 25, disabled and looking for more in my life. I know we’ll all get there even if at our own pace 💚
I wonder if that affected his human romantic relationships. I'm just imagining like, a super absurd argument like 'I'm sorry I'm not as good as your CRANE-WIFE!'
They are beautiful birds. I love watching the Sandhill Crain's when they migrate through IN. There will be 100s that land in a field near me in Spring.
Awesome story. Imagine the ribbing that poor guy took from his colleagues. Ouch.
Grapekun is my favorite bird that fell in love with an unlikely mate
Wonderful story about Walnut!
Honestly, what a sweet story.
Loving all the content ❤ rip walnut x
If ONLY they'd taken care of her and raised her like how they do with Whooping Cranes.
What I mean is that when they were breeding Whooping Cranes, they'd wear white clothing and mimic the movements and sounds of adult Whooping Cranes.
They'd move their arms up and down to teach the young cranes how to fly and used a crane puppet to feed the newly hatched chicks.
They have a barrier so that the chicks wouldn't imprint on the caretakers. Even the white clothing they wore covered their faces so that the cranes didn't imprint on them.
The reason they raise Whooping Cranes like that is so that they can help the birds be ready for reintroduction and so they wouldn't be too used to humans. Basically, they WON'T associate humans with everything (food, care, etc.)
I feel like they should've raised their cranes in a similar fashion. From what I read, she ONLY had six hatchling, which isn't enough to help wild populations.
that's a great name for a crane
This is a wonderful and touching story.
R.I.P. Walnut.

Awww...
I think there is a worth-while debate to be had of whether we taxidermy those that kill and keep endangered species as trophies.

5 to 6 times a day that crane was in heaven lol
That's a needy lover. I'm sticking to humans.
