  • In today's video we will learn about 2 species that were once known to science, but seemed to have been lost. In one case, for 140 years. In the other for 1800 years.
We will hear the stories of:
    1. The Black-Naped Pheasant Pigeon (Otidiphaps nobilis insularis) and
    2. The Judean Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera - ancient cultivar)

@@peatmoss4415 IKR. Reality is a bummer, when you are so caught up in a fantasy. It would be a fantasy to think that people like that won't continue to f'up reality by trying to achieve a fantasy. Projecting responsibility onto yourself for what a member of your species did or does is mental and denying entropy. There is no 'we' in that sense or you could blame the carbon atoms or any other element that make up your body as well. The future is not responsible for the past.

A variety of dryland rice known as Upland Red Bearded Rice that used to be grown by slaves and ex slaves in the US was thought to be extinct as it was no longer found in the US.
It was a variety of indigenous African rice.
It was found in the 2000's being cultivated in the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago and being called Moruga Hill Rice. It had been brought to the island by American blacks who fought for the British in the War of 1812 and were resettled, and had been planted by their descendants and others since.

    Nice film.
I think an honest solution of the situation that wild animals face is much more about leaving them alone, than it is about climate change. The climate has always changed, but we haven't always logged the homes of animals, shot Bison and Passenger pigeons by the millions, polluted their waters, etc. Climate change may well be what we are getting by cutting down the forest, but if you left THIS forest alone, the climate could change some and the birds would adapt some. They can't adapt to clear cut.
I have grown date palms from seed, and I can tell you that they take forever to reach any size.
My seed is taken from the fresh dates sold in "Eastern type" grocery stores. They start with a single leaf, like a blade of grass.

That's what happens when you can just point your gun up at any given angle and be guaranteed to hit at least one bird. These things reportedly flew in flocks so huge that they literally blocked out the sun for a good few miles. Even the most incompetent and amateur marksman could hit one of them when they gathered like this.
Unfortunately, this was before the concept of evolution - and thus, extinction - was accepted in any capacity. At the risk of offending the Bible-thumpers, the morons thought they could happily hunt or harvest any animal they liked as intensively as they liked because all of God's creations were perfect and thus could never disappear forever. Even when it was accepted, it was thought that, like evolution, it was a slow and lengthy process. The theory of mass extinctions suddenly and catastrophically wiping out species, not unlike the dinosaurs, wasn't even officially accepted until the 1980s. So, with such an abundant food source at their disposal, it never occurred to the chucklefucks that they could ever take too many. After all, with literal *billions* of birds (no, that isn't an exaggeration), what're the chances they'd ever be wiped out?
Turns out, they were pretty darn good.

I am so glad to have found something positive for a change, but this doesn’t mean that humanity will make necessary decisions and care more into preserving what habitats and ecosystems we have left to help rare species survive and thrive. 👍😊 Every day though, we are losing more and more species to human occupation with little regard to the consequences to the environment in which life that coexists in many of these areas…😢. Instead, humanity is more consumed and concerned about self centered egotistical values of war, and the destruction of habitats and ecosystems to suit their own selfish interests and desires, rather than which for the various species which are living in them. This will also mean that humanity will be unable to survive without this blend of unique life in which these various plants and animals and which forms our food chain as well. ALL LIFE IS CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER, ALL LIFE DEPENDS UPON THE OTHER FOR ITS EXISTENCE AND TO THRIVE. When one species goes extinct, so will others follow in suit, a domino effect, which will ultimately lead up to our own extinction in the end result. Instead of using and recycling what waste is being tossed away and is left behind, such as plastics and other wasteful materials, Humanity is slowly destroying the planet with its own selfish consequences of contamination, pollution, poisoning its environment with every thing imaginable and saying there is nothing wrong with it, burying it into the ground, hiding it in the oceans and waterways and calling it good, only to be left behind for future generations to deal with it. By then, there may be nothing left to save us from our own misguided choices, decisions and mistakes already being made by our civilization….A world left barren of ALL LIFE itself, much as Mars is today. 😥

It breaks my heart to think that some logging company will be allowed to destroy this beautiful bird, it is criminal and definitely against nature. I hope the government of this area puts a stop to this, after all what is more important profit or the preservation of this beautiful creature. I guess it’s the government of these countries that are allowing these companies to destroy the rainforest. Mankind is slowly killing itself and everyone else and everything else in the process. These islands, these forests our our home and valuable beyond all else, Including the short sided profits of logging companies which are destroying our planet in a suicide for temporary profit. They are killers and murderers of our planet and the life that exists on it, they are evil incarnate! Destroyers! Our future looks so bleak for all of us, there is no focus or attention on any of this nonsense going on.

In modern day science this is done with genetics, along with differences in behavior, different ecological niches, physical variety etc. These various subspecies are important if you want to keep logging since you need healthy forests, and the birds and animals that live in those forests keep it healthy.
You're not a 'heretic' that's a religious phrase, just ignorant especially since you think you're being clever. Fortunately from your word choice I can tell you are religious so:
The different species are good, pray about it and whatever priest, imam, rabbi etc you follow will eventually get the message from god and explain it to you in a way that's easy to understand.

Lemme put it to you this way:
You go to a junkyard and walk around for, say an hour. You see lots of things, like old couches, garbage bags of rotting food, and clothes so moth-eaten that no-one would wear them. But you can only see what's on the surface. To sift through the entire contents of the place, it would take you years, if not a lifetime to find and examine every little piece and scrap.
Now imagine, at the same time as you're exploring, someone else on the opposite side of the junkyard is burning all the trash. They burn a lot of things - the old couches, garbage bags of rotting food, and clothes so moth-eat that no-one would wear them. But they're also burning things that you haven't seen yet, like that one pair of unique, worn-out sneakers. They burn through the garbage faster than you can look through and examine it all because, unlike you, they aren't concerned with studying everything. All they care about is getting rid of the garbage as quickly as possible.
By the time the junkyard's been burned to the ground, you might be lucky if you even got halfway through before everything turned to ash. What else was in there that you missed? What didn't you get the chance to see? Guess you'll never know.

@@rockydaniel7073 Your missing *my* point. There is just as much chance as missing something as there is not missing something.
With that in mind, take into consideration that we are still, to this very day, discovering new species. Virtually every dive into the ocean abyss, every trek into the rainforest yields a brand-new species previously unknown to science. If we're still discovering new species, then that means there are plenty more out there that we have yet to catalog. And that means that are just as many species we will never discover because we destroyed them before we even knew about them.

Distorting history to push a religious-political narrative is disturbing. The Roman Empire didn't "collapse" and Islam didn't "spread" in the area. The Roman Empire was invaded, half of its territory was taken, the inhabitants were slaughtered, enslaved, forcibly converted, and the lands colonised by the Muslim Arabs. The Crusades were a direct response to that, and were indeed instigated at the request of the Roman Empire itself for assistance from the Christian West, to help save it from the invading Muslim Turkish hordes that it was crumbling to after four CENTURIES of constant Islamic aggression, piracy, invasion, sieges, rape, enslavement etc from the Muslim Arabs and then Muslim Turks. The Roman Empire held out for the better part of a thousand years from Islam's inception, only finally succumbing to the Muslim Turks in 1453.
Blaming the loss of a mere cultivar of Date Palm - and yes, it's just a cultivated variety, not a species, and has very little relevance to your channel - on the Crusades, is pseudoscience that you have zero evidence for. People had far more pressing things to worry about in the Middle Ages than cataloguing the demise of a single cultivar of a plant that was otherwise still continuously grown throughout the Middle East and North Africa up to this day, and indeed is grown in appropriate climates throughout the world at this very moment.
You do incredible work with your channel and I admire you in many countless ways, but you are meant to be a natural history channel based on scientific facts. Please don't push distortions of fact for political comfort and convenience. It's morally and ethically egregious, and a black mark against your name. Be better than that, because you are far better than that.

@@jonhenke1504 I am absolutely a Christian. I just take issue with anyone forcing others to abide by their religious beliefs. The notion that Christians are being persecuted in the West os ridiculous. Most of us want to live and let live in a secular society. Most of us recognize that we are not sitting in judgment of others. God will judge when the time comes, and I suspect even then, it won’t be what we think He gave us the gifts of intelligence, compassion, and free will. The greatest of those is compassion, and Jesus taught us. Sorry to go off like this, but to take issue with BCE is ludicrous. Oh…and that means I’m judging you. Sorry about that.
