Spindle Replacement from S Blade to Star Blade Cub Cadet ZT1 MTD Riding Lawn Mower

- In this video, I show you how easy it is to change from the proprietary "S" lawnmower blade type to the much more common "star" pattern lawnmower blade by changing out the spindles on your zero-turn lawnmower. The cost was not much more expensive than a new set of OEM Cub Cadet blades and the new spindles allow for easy maintenance with the zirk grease fittings. Total install time 1 hour. Note: The spindles I used on my Cub Cadet ZT1 50 were not a cross referenced part number as one did not exist that had the "star" pattern. Make sure and measure your spindles before ordering.

I think a lot of people were waiting for MTD to do something nice for their customer... This s series spendle was a hell of a thing to do to us as we're going into the worst depression in history... I like the green colored lawn mower blades. It makes me start thinking John Deere.
Here is one that appears to be for your model. Double check it to be sure and make sure to grease the zerk fittings before you mow if you end up buying them: amzn.to/3KBqFjj
I have the same mower, Thank you for posting this. I've spent the last day and a half trying to research what parts I need to do the same thing. I wish I had found this video sooner
Glad you found the video! The spindles are working great, in fact I just mowed tonight. Let me know how the install goes if you end up changing yours out or if I can help in any way!
8ten has really good quality parts and I’ve used them for 3 years in shop, even the belts are holding up great 👍
I agree, they are working great! The representative I spoke with before I ordered was also very helpful.
If you disassemble those spindles, you may find the bearings are still sealed on both sides, and you can't pump grease into a sealed bearing.
That's certainly possible. They seemed to take the grease well (one overflowed slightly where the shaft exits the spindle) and are cutting beautifully.
Yes so I take them apart and remove the inside covers 😊😊😊
Fast and easy to do ❤
Actually there's a video proving you can just have to pump enough grease in instead of stopping at 4 pumps or so.
Just order a set for my zt1 54. I had a spindle break. I almost bought just that one new spindle for the same price has the whole kit to replace them all. Glad I found your video. And yeah the s shape center hole sucks. One of the biggest cons in my opinion. Glad I’ll be changing them to the 6 point.
Thanks for taking the time to comment! Glad the video helped, I think you will really like them and no more proprietary blades!
Which ones you order and from where? I need some for my zt1 54"
These look like the ones you need. Double check the part number of your spindles and mower in the description to be sure. amzn.to/3VZCipy
Good info
Thank you!
I have the same zt1 mower.
I was able to source Rotary brand blades for it From Ebay for $11.42 each.
So didn't seem worth it to change spindles.
Also, the spindle bearings fail because the outside seals fail.
They get contaminated and destroyed.
Filling that void between the bearings doesn't add much life if any to the bearings imho.
The bearings are easy and inexpensive to replace compared to a spindle assembly.
Did those blades have the star pattern?
@@ThatDadMike no, s shaped pattern.
Rotary 17224.
I agree the star pattern is in most cases less expensive and much easier to find replacement blades.
Think the spindles would be the same for my Troy-Bilt Super Bronco 50? They have the S Shaped spindles. Second season with it and I just bought a pair of mulching blades for it. The star pattern spindles would be so much better.
It looks like it probably will! Double check the models listed on the page here: amzn.to/4cOGf7c
The good thing is the Amazon listing states free returns in the event you need it. If it were me, I would give it a shot and then double check the dimensions on the new spindle with the one from your mower before you install.
Let me know how it works out if you order them!
I have a 2022 Cub cadet XL1 46 inch deck riding lawn mower... I'd like to know what star spindles I would use... I would have never bought this lawn mower if I would have known about this...😮
I was surprised as well, frustrated to be honest. The blades also only lasted 30 hours - I have never had a set last that short of time. With a new set over $70, I had to figure out something else. To get started, look at your spindle and get the part number off of it. Email that to 8ten and see if they have a star version replacement. If not, get the part number that they give you and then you can begin to look at dimensions to find a star that fits. It's a bit of work but once you are done, you will really like it. I have cut my lawn 3 times since installing and could not be happier. Here is one that appears to be for your model. Double check it to be sure and make sure to grease the zerk fittings before you mow if you end up buying them: amzn.to/3KBqFjj
Now if you can figure out how to put a normal size battery in.instead of the smaller gel coat battery we would be in business thank you for making this video I looked at home Depot and my home Depot doesn't have the s shap blades in stock Suprise Suprise
Glad the video helped! My Home Depot only had a few, but at $83 for just the blades I figured there had to be a better way. The cub blades just did not last - the new ones are working great. Great idea on the battery!
I have a Craftsman Z5800 54in zero turn with the terrible S shaped spindles but I can’t figure out with spindles to get with Star pattern to replace them 😢 Can someone help me please
See if you can find a website that sells the s shaped OEM replacement for your mower with the dimensions. Once you have the dimensions, you should be able to find the star pattern spindle that will replace it on the 8ten site (link in my video description). That's the process that I used and the 8ten spindles and blades have worked excellent.
Partstree.com says that the spindle on your mower is an 619-04183B which is now a 719-07293-M. Double check the part number on your spindle and the dimensions as the cross reference may not work since you are changing from the s to the star. Here is one that appears to be used on a lot of 54" mowers - check and see if the dimensions are the same as what you have installed before ordering as it may not work: amzn.to/3XMMcxy
@@ThatDadMike you sir are a hero! After finding out the new spindle assembly housing part number all the sudden there’s a million aftermarket spindle assemblies that fit my deck! My lawn says thank you 🫡
Excellent news! When you get the new spindles, double check all of the dimensions and pulley size before you install them so you can return if needed - I had a terrible time trying to cross reference with the MTD/Cub Cadet part number on mine and ended up just ordering what I thought looked like a match based on dimensions and I got lucky. Let me know how they work once you get them all changed out!
I’m not happy with the change MTD has made, seems there pretty much trying to screw us over all the time
Praying Murray will go back in business 😊❤
It is certainly unfortunate, I do wish they would go back to the way they used to be.
Murray is back in business. Saw a couple new Murray's in home Depot this year. Probably still owned by mtd though, nearly all box store mowers are made by mtd even John Deere box store mowers were up to a couple years ago.
