What happens if you dont drink enough water? Signs of Dehydration + 4 ways to keep hydrated

- This video looks at the vital life-giving substance water and how it plays a role in the health of our bodies.
On average 60% of our bodies are made up of water.
New borns are made up of about 75% water while the average adult has about 60% then we have the elderly which typically are made up of about 50%.
But what does happen if we don't drink enough water? and what are some simple yet effective ways to help us drink the water we need.
Our age, activity, Body Mass index and gender all have a role to play in how much water we need. However the general rule of thumb is about 8 glasses of water for adults.
You might think this a lot of water to drink in a day but thankfully you are not an elephant who drinks up to 200 L a day. While on the other end of the spectrum we aren't tardigrades which can survive several years without water. Humans on the other hand can only last about 3-4 days without water before death occurs.
Research shows that 75% of Americans are dehydrated with places like Australia being up to 80%. You may be asking well why are we so dehydrated?
And although the answer may be simple it doesn't help that we use and lose about 1.5-2 litres of water a day through things like our urine, breath, sweat and even smaller amounts through our poop! So if we don't replenish the water lost, our bodies begin to show signs that it is suffering.
So what are some of the signs of dehydration?
Your urine will become a darker.
Dry skin.
Dry mouth/bad breath.
Dry eyes.
Sickness and staying sick for longer.
Headaches, Diziness, cloudy mind and having a hard time concentrating.
Muscle and joint pain
Lethargic and mood/Irritation
Hunger pains

Keep a water bottle near you.
Eating more fruits and vegetables, like cucumbers!

I have no liquid ( no juice, no coffee, no water) for 4 days. My only food is one ham on white bun. I feel fine except for dry mouth and dark pee. I will update on 7th day.
Man this is very good information. I used to scoff at 8 glasses of water per day until this week! I was steel fitting a decking in the sun. I felt the sun attacking my body and I constantly was hiding from the sun and drinking water. But I realised my coworkers were pretty much comfortable in the sun. As the day went on and I drank more and more water and it began to digest in my body; I began to be more comfortable in the sun. Until day 2 and 3 where I was really ok in the sun. I said this to one of my coworker and he said yes; but drink water at home and you will drink less at work. Then it hit me how important drinking that 8 glass a day is. Even when you dont feel degydrated; you actually are. And working in the sun is a good test. I then realised that my dry itchy skin was maybe I was dehydrated. And I realised that I just took a bath and my skin is not itching me. Nor the day before. Now I am certain that drinking water; even if you dont feel the need to; is very very very important.
My muscle and joint pain !!!! ….. No doctor ever let me know I was dehydrated ( I never consume water ) I seen this video and started ! One day in and my pain went from a 10 to an 8 overnight. I pray that as I continue to hydrate, I can get rid of this altogether… Thank you so much !! I’ve been dealing with this for 11 years.

A lot has changed since I drink 8 glasses of water a day. My skin used to be flaky but it was gone within 2 days. My face is too oily but now it has lessen and not us bad as before. Drinking enough water a day do great wonders on the body.
Not gonna lie, I actually don’t like drinking water. I don’t even drink one water bottle a day, it’s so bad
i hate the taste of drinking water, i only drink water while exercise because that makes it much more easier to do my rutine and i feel my muscles become so much stronger, cause if i know my urine is yellow that means i have 10x harder to do my workout.

When I get thirst thirsty that is what I go for it literally quenches your thirst like no other. Just try adding more vegetables and fruits to your diet then like they spoke of in the video.

It's not just how much but the quality of the water that matters. Regular water is dead water that can't hydrate you no matter how much of it you drink.

I have a 60oz jar at work. I drink 2 jars each day. I don’t drink nearly as much water on weekends. I’m thinking 120oz of water 5 days a week should get me through.

Hello . I am 41 years old its not because of this video but is becouse I figured it out on my own I work 12 hours a day sometimes 6 days or 7 days a week . The only water that I was getting was from. A coffee with 2 shots of espresso a day . Not to mention I was drinking lots of beer each day after work I was feeling weak and tired at work I been feeling alot better more strength 💪 just by eating 1 or 2 cucumbers each day with tomato and drinking lots off water also if i eat any kind of food I drink water with it. And I feel great .
My problem is the trips to the toilet 😐
Just got released from hospitsl due to dehydration. Totally not the diagnosis I would have expected.
I don't see why people don't drink water it's so refreshing. I drink so much water I can't go a day without at least 6 bottles of water.

I don’t know why I never drink water. I have joint pain. My knee crack like I’m 90years old. I always feel tired. Can’t focus. So I hope to change my bad habits. I have very sharp headaches also.

I have been to the gym, pre workout makes you hydrated along with extreme sweat and training I was very dehydrated and unaware of that. My energy plummeted and joins were hurting, now I’m getting back to normal

The Dr gave me a blood test yesterday and couldn't get any blood from my vein as I was so dehydrated .that's why I felt so exhausted and told me if I don't drink more I would have to go to hospital

Oh yeah i always doubted water like i dont need it until i feel thirsty.
Well i was sick with the stomach flu and i was making my way to the restroom and i just fell down laid on the floor and slept for 2 hours then woke up and went to the restroom. I wasnt tired at all as ive been resting and sleeping for a couple days. To get rid of this virus.
I am NOT thirsty. I don't need to drink any liquids unless the thirst is urgent. That is rare for me.

Living water hydrates 6xs more effectively than regular water.
I am 10 years old and I had dehydration my symptoms were dry throat diarrhea loss of appetite and I started to drink more water and it didn't help so I had to go to the doctor and the doctor said I could have passed out I was also feeling weak and I feel better now and now I drink 2/3 liters every day if not 8 glasses also thanks for the tips 😁

I don’t get thirsty so have to force my self to drink.I get cran-apple juice and use 1/3 in a glass and 2/3 filtered water.Was put on diurectics for heart problems,will really cause constipation.

I found that very useful as now I know what happens if you don't drink enough water and how to make myself keep hydrated. Some of these related to me as I have dry eyes, bad breath, darker urine,dry mouth, being sick for longer and also losing concentration. this monday I went to karate for the first time and it was really hot outside and I didn’t drink enough water. So I was sweating like hell and like near the ending of the training I felt dizzy and my vision got shaky. I first thought it’d go away if I just kept going like a headache but it kept getting worse and I was scared of fainting so I stopped and said “excuse me? I don’t feel so good..” I couldn’t even stand straight and then the trainer told the other students to quickly get a chair and he held me tight and helped me go to the chair and sit on the chair but like the chair was flipped on the floor and I had to sit like that one position where people in yoga do with the ball like they lay down and out their legs on the yoga ball. So he was really kind and he gave me a free bottle of cola because my blood pressure was really low and he said it’s okay because it was like 40 degrees outside and I was really sweaty and I was dehydrated and didn’t drink enough before the training so yeah. What I’m trying to say is it’s really dangerous and it can happen anytime anywhere. Please get help or tell somebody if you’re feeling dizzy or your vision gets blurry. You could even faint. Also, if anything like that happens or has happened to you at a training before, (or ANYWHERE) there’s nothing to be embarrassed of! It can happen sometimes and it’s normal if you don’t drink enough or if the heat is just too much for you. But please, PLEASE drink water before AND after doing sports. Salt, salt and more salt. If you have cut out all processed foods you need to add a lot of salt to your food and water. Drinking a lot of water will actually make things worse if you are low on sodium.
My dad literally doesn’t drink water. Not an exaggeration. He exclusively drinks Diet Coke. And I mean absolutely no water. I’m worried for his health.

I thought so too! Carrots don't taste that watery. However surprisingly, carrots are 87-88% water!

Our bodies seem to adapt to dehydration. I bet 80 pc of Australians don't feel dehydrated, and nor do I. Really struggling to change my own behaviour and my children's in the midst of a busy life.

I've just started to do a rehydration rehab program for Myself. I was merely drinking coffee, teas and milk sources of liquid intake but despite some of the beverages that are made of water aren't as cleansing to or hydrating as water. I am hoping My rehab will go well and improve My health. I'm just a week into My program and I will keep going.
