Vazhakulam & Kumbalangi - India's 1st Eco-Tourism Village | Kerala Ep 3 | Tried 'TODDY' & Local Food

- On the 4th day of my road trip across Kerala, I visited a town called 'Vazhakulam' which falls in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. This town is known as the 'Pineapple City of India' due to its large-scale pineapple farms. Vazhakulam also has the largest market for pineapple in Asia. The pineapples from Vazhakulam have also got a geographic indication.
Toddy & Local Food - After visiting the famous pineapple market and centre, I also went to try the famous local drink of Kerala called Toddy. Toddy is a famous alcoholic beverage in Kerala which is prepared directly from palm trees in the area by Toddy tapping! It’s completely organic and it can get intoxicating only when you have it in excessive quantity - well! at least that's what I have been told :). I went to a shop to have Toddy, which is quite a famous one near cochin. I also tried the seafood there. Loved the fish cooked in banana leaves and also the prawns.
Kumbalangi - After trying Toddy and having loads of seafood, I went to a village called Kumbalangi which is the first eco-tourism village in India. The main occupation of the people of Kumbalangi is fishing. You will find hundreds of Chinese fishing nets sites in the backwaters of Kerala in this village. This village is well-connected by road to Kochi and you can either take a bus or cab to reach here. I would say you must visit Kumbalangi whenever you visit Kerala :)

If you drink fresh toddy in an hour after it is brought down from the tree then it is really sweet and very good for health and you won't get any alcoholic effect. But after an hour the fermentation begins and it turns alcoholic. Kappa or tapioca or casava must be eaten together with fish or fish curry or any kind of seafood, it is awesome. Kappa can be eaten with various chutneys too like different kinds of chilly chutneys or fish chutneys or red meat curries as well. That combination is mouth watering.

Hmm... 'Pineapple city of India' really I didn't know it earlier. so also abt 'toddy'. Nice to see this vlog👍
Thanks a ton :)
Vazhakulam is a village, people refer it as a town because of the market. Has a turnover of over Rs. 4 crores per day on average, at its peak usually reaches Rs. 12-14 crores per day just with pineapples alone, And then there is rubber, which adds another Rs. 1-2 crores daily. All in all annual revenue of Vazhakulam would be around Rs. 2000 crores and divided by a population of just under 3 lakhs. Anyway, most of Kerala is semi-urban, so one will always get confused if it is a town or a city. It's a typical Kerala village.

Hey desi girl traveller. Beautiful vlog. Can I please request you to mention in the vlogs ,the date of filming it . We will know from the dates which month / season you travelled and this will give us an idea when one should plan the trip. Thanks
Thanks for the suggestion. I mostly put month and year details in my videos. Probably I missed putting in this one :)
The best time to travel to kerala is the monsoon time. (from June to November). But, the official tourism season starts in November to April-May. It will be super hot from March though. I would suggest you to come in rainy season. The rain and the greenery will make you feel like you are in heaven. Now, we have special monsoon tour packages as well. You do not want to miss the rain here in Kerala. It will be an amazing experience for you.
❤️❤️❤️
Can you share the area and restaurant where you had toddy and seafood? Thank You.
