    I call MTH HO steam locomotives the rarest of rare because they're extremely elusive.

    That Big Boy is gaining weight faster than I do at Christmas. I'm looking forward to getting the N scale Big Boy and Challenger by Athearn. Will you be willing to have an N scale Big Boy and Challenger?

    Excellent model of the UP "big boy" type, I wish that I was actually able to afford one of these models before MTH trains shut down their business operations.

    Another excellent review. It did seem to me that you were having trouble getting some of the sounds to work as intended. At one point it sounded like the whistle got stuck on and I could hear the recorded loop. The engine does definitely have a massively hefty pull to it. I'm not an MTH fan but it was an excellent video review.

    the classification lights work on the broadway limited version and the red working lights on the tender but then wheel caps are black I like the look of this version but the lights are a deal breaker for me

    very good review James! I like how you covered the DCS portion of what is best about this locomotive. I noticed that the DCS has several options on your controller that we don't have on DCC. It would be nice to see a video about that- I am especially interested int the "boost" "brake" and "coast" options.... What do they do?
    If you do do a video about DCS it would be cool to include both the Big Boy and the MTH UP GEVO or Dash 9 in the video to show the advantages of having DCS for steam vs. Diesel
    thanks
    Joel

    Doesn't MTH HO have quality issues when it comes to longevity and repair? I heard they are quite tedious and that the repair service is rather terrible. Has MTH fixed that issue now?

    • @OriginalBongoliath
      @OriginalBongoliath Před 5 lety

      The MTH Big Boy here can do 18" minimum but it won't look right and toylike since a real Big Boy wouldn't go on curves that small.
      24" absolute minimum, 30" modelers minimum.

    • @westtexasrailfan
      @westtexasrailfan Před 6 lety

      Peter Luk I believe so. On my MTH Proto Sound 3.0 Big Boy 4014, it's not too loud, but then again I have the sound all the way up. It's not noticeable when you're up close or the sound is all the way up. But I recommend them, they're so cool!

    Good afternoon. Please, write to the manufacturer of the data of the wagons attached to Big Boy and the articles on the wagons. We do not sell them in Russia. Therefore, I will buy via the Internet.

  • @DellaKitty50
    @DellaKitty50 Před 7 lety +8

    I still think the BLI is superior. I saw a comparison vid that involved a steep grade and the MTH struggled, but the BLI didn't even hesitate. Not to mention the smoking whistle and depleting coal load.

  • @cva6238
    @cva6238 Před 5 lety

    Unless I am mistaken, the wheels on the front truck of the BB do NOT turn. What is up with that on a locomotive at this price point?

  • @NicksCollectableCreations

    bell rate seems too fast to me, other than that small tweak, i'd say it's pretty good out of the box.

    • @westtexasrailfan
      @westtexasrailfan Před 6 lety +1

      UP Trains 4014 the bell rate is supposed to be fast, the real 4014 never had a swinging bell, it's an air bell, like the ones on older diesels.

  • @lindaalvarez9383

    Ok to all you BLM lover's out there this is the most powerful Ho Big Boy on the market. Jlwii2000 dose a pull test on the MTH Big Boy and its at 11.1 on his scale. Then check out his video on the BLM Ho Big Boy his pull test on it came up with only 6.5 ! LOL MTH wins when it comes to POWER.

    • @trainmaster1548
      @trainmaster1548 Před 6 lety +2

      pull tests do not get that accurate. On a grade the mth would struggle. But bli being heavier, it would not struggle. A real test would be to hook it up to cars and see which can do more. BLI could probably pull more cars up a grade than mth could becuase bli being heavier.

  • @lorrainedimmock4096
    @lorrainedimmock4096 Před 3 lety

    Voice sounds make it a toy, always hate this on models, like the drivers breakfast on Hornby sound files, just cheese, would be so nice to have the best sounds " configured " for more realistic running, safely valves lifting when working hard, and injectors working, cannot be that difficult, can it...? But smoke looks great, not whisping but looks like the blowers on..!

  • @brockkrenke791
    @brockkrenke791 Před 7 lety

    two things that I have to say about mth ho for DCC operators, the models themselves look amazing, and prices are better athearn and bli. But, the one thing that completely steers my away from mth is DCC compatibility. Yes I know you can buy DCC ready models, if you can find the one your looking for. I would probably have an all mth locomotive fleet if it weren't for the dcc compatibility issues. My layout and the club I'm part of both run dcc.

    • @westtexasrailfan
      @westtexasrailfan Před 6 lety +1

      Brock Krenke they are DCC compatable. I run mine on an NCE Power Cab, not a DCS remote, and it runs fine. So if you can find one, get one, if you want it.
