    tolerate it: it's in 5/4 time signature, which is why it sounds "irregular". Your brain automatically wants 4/4 signature, but it's such a great choice, because it almost emulates how she's "younger" and "inexperienced" and is always out of step in this relationship. It also matches how the song ends: with no resolution. The time signature never feels balanced or complete, just like their relationship isn't balanced and we never get a definite decision from Rebecca's: she's still sitting and watching him and we're left waiting for her action.

      @@Aiibh of course! In my opinion it is about the speaker leaving the person. The metaphor of "gaining the weight" of their relationship and then, by leaving she would be losing the weight of that person (possibly also hinting that the relationship feels heavy etc.) . Similar to the previous line (took this dagger in me and removed it) the speaker is saying that it would be very hard to leave the person they are talking about, but that it was possible. ("Believe me I could do it)
      That is how I have always interpreted that line, I hope this made sense and sorry for the rambling comment, I got a bit carried away aha!

      In terms of favourite album? Although I absolutely adore the shock Taylor gave us all with folklore and it was so unexpected it was that much better, I would have to go with 1989. I see Evermore as the epitome of storytelling. In Folklore she wrote more musical songs but still more about an specific feeling or situation. In Evermore she wrote literal stories with full plots and even plot twists, she’s literally insane and we love her for that

    “Drawing hearts in the by-line” I always thought this lyric was another metaphor for her worshiping him. The by-line of an article is the line in which the author or writer is stated. By her drawing hearts in the byline I always saw it as her drawing hearts beside his name, still making him her everything. Xxx

      I agree!! And I also believe that this can be another example of how she feels like a kid alongside with the "waiting by the door like I'm just a kid" and always mentioning how he is older, because drawing hearts beside the name of a person you like is a teenager/child thing to do.

    • @AllTheArtsy
      @AllTheArtsy Před 2 lety +4

      Exactly! The byline is not the margins, it's where the writer is named. It's actually obvious, at least to me, that her husband is a writer -- "While you were out building other worlds, where was I? / Now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life / Drawing hearts in the byline" -- Building other worlds can mean he writes fiction. She is drawing hearts on his name.

    • @Mila-Rosa
      @Mila-Rosa Před rokem

      Okay so I'm RIDICULOUSLY late to this but I took it as him not really seeing her as a whole person and not including her in his life, or 'story', so instead of her name on the byline, there are just hearts, which further shows that even though her identity has been erased, she's still doing all of the work to keep this relationship going and it emphasizes the one sided nature of their relationship.

  • @myeahonline

    Watching this back after You’re Losing Me and fathoming that she probably put Tolerate It as a track 5 because there might have been a moment in their relationship where Taylor felt Joe was just tolerating her shit. Because there are so many parallels with both songs! And it makes sense that she used barbed wire in the song which steals it from Invisible String because maybe it was about him.
    * passiveness of both partners in both songs (I notice everything you do or don’t do/do something babe)
    * her trying so hard to be better for the partner (used my best colors for your portrait/ gave you all my best me’s)
    * she knows she’s worth more and he isn’t seeing it (I know my love should be celebrated / I’m the best thing at this party)
    * she feels like she’s being ignored (while you were out there building other worlds where was i? / front lines don’t you ignore me)
    * she feels that she has to beg him for his love (now I’m begging for footnotes in the story of your life / literally the whole second half of the bridge)
    * she feels that her pain is so insignificant (always taking up too much space and time / i know my pain is such an imposition)
    Like i am losing my fucking MIIIIINNNDDD

    For some reason, when I listen to the bridge and get to the line “believe me I could do it”, I get the feeling that she’s almost trying to convince herself that she can leave, more than convincing her husband. Telling herself she can have the courage to leave the relationship. Additionally, with the opening lyrics matching the end, it makes me think that this entire song is kind of an inner monologue, unsure if her feelings are just “all in her head”, hoping she’s wrong but also convincing herself that she can leave. Tolerate It is a damn masterpiece.

      YES to everything you said. I tried to explain this song to a friend and she just said, “why doesn’t she just up and leave him” …with the intonation and implication that she thought the woman was weak. Safe to say she was on the non-voluntary listening end of a complex explanation of all dem complexities…of insecurity, uncertainty and-most of all-the complete and utter mindfuck that is hopeful hesitation.

    I always call Dorothea's narrator "Leo". My weird reasoning: Dorothea means "the gift (of God)" which is also what "Nala" means in Swahili. Nala the lion -> Leo, which I also like because this song sounds August-ish (month, not song) which is the main month for the Leo star sign. I like how that correlates, because as you said, Tis' the Damn Season sounds not like a Christmas song, but like the season itself, and its told in the present, i.e., when Dorothea is actually in Tupelo for the holiday. Leo's perspective in Dorothea is during the off-season, when she's back in L.A, so I like the synergy of it sounding like summer. Thus, "Leo".

I just want to say you both do such a phenomenal job analyzing lyrics and giving music the proper respect it deserves. What was already deep becomes deeper and what already felt significant takes on even more significant meaning.
    With all that said, your commentary on Tolerate It was beyond offensive and I’ve needed to pause just to process what you’ve put into words about what Taylor is singing about. Really hits home in a way I don’t think I fully understood on just listening to the song itself.

    I feel like, as we learned in the long pond sessions when taylor talked about hoax, her songs can address and be about more than one situation, so happiness, in my opinion, could be both about abigail’s divorce and about the situation with scott. The entire song is told from the perspective of a divorce, so it might be literally about abigail’s situation, but she pulled inspiration from her own experiences, like she always does, so the divorce story is literally abigail’s, but it’s metaphorically about the breakdown of her own relationship with scott and her realization that she could maybe forgive him in the future.

    I've been calling Dorothea's lover "Sunny" ever since I decided "Midnight Rain" was in the Dorothea Cinematic Universe. Sunny can be a name or nickname. Also, it could be spelled Sunni, which I understand to be a Korean girl's name, or Sonny, a common boy's nickname that doesn't go with any one name (like Junior and Chip).

    • @mhysa1864
      @mhysa1864 Před rokem +2

      Wait what. Midnight rain in Dorothea Universe makes sense because:
      1) The lyrics "He wanted it comfortable, I wanted that pain" can be viewed as -> he wanted to stay in their hometown, have a normal job and be comfortable with his "living" or whatever, but she wanted that "pain" which is that pain that some pop stars experience (lack of privacy, pressure to be perfect, etc...) but at the end she wanted it.
      2) In Midnight Rain she refers to how he has this family things like family gatherings, family time together and more and to her it came like a post card (from another city) but for him it's every day 'cause he's there with his family every day and she's not!?
      3)And she was also making her own name, chasing that fame. And in the beginning she mentions pageant queens and new pretenders (like pop culture and stuff if that makes sense).

    I thought maybe when she describes him to people (his portrait which is like who he is) she uses his better traits like her “best colors”, her best words, better memories they shared, she shows only the good side of their relationship, which is probably when they’re with other people and not alone.

    I think Dorothea is criminally underrated, First off the topic of the song being sung by a lover to a person who has moved away to pursue stardom and how Taylor portrays such desperately but also acceptance to the reality is just so great. The vocals just bring such a fullness to this song paired with the hummingish talking she does in the song gives you a chance to breath and just lose yourself in the harmonies. The last thing is the instrumentals that just go along so well with the rest of the song, but the almost electronic sounds that you hear in the sort of long pauses at the end just give you such a warm feeling I can't explain. I find this her best song in her entire discography and probably of all time which is why i'm so passionate about this song to this degree. Great video by the way!

    When happiness starts those first few lyrics, not only does "honey when I'm above the trees, I see this for what it is" mean that she can see the relationship clearly, it also references back to seven when she says "please picture me in the trees I hit my peak at seven feet," and I realized that on happiness she's talking about how she is past her young innocence and now understands what a real relationship is supposed to look like and what love is. She is "above" this past (the trees, or her childhood innocence).

      Then she says 'when I am right down in it all the years I have given is just shit we're dividing up' so now she's only seeing this from her own pov and
      Throughout this whole song she switches from looking at the bigger picture and being compassionate to thinking about her hurt
      It's genius

I always thought it tied into the "story of your life" part. He is the author of this story she doesn't understand but she still draws hearts for him. She still cares and pays attention to the story. She tries to add herself to this story but she still is "begging for footnotes" despite all of her efforts. Idk, that's how I took it.

    I actually cannot fathom the fact that there are people out there who don't appreciate Dorothea. Its production perfectly embodies the feeling of the song which to me is selfless, unconditional love. Seeing Dorotheas perspective in TTDS, you can see that she looks at their time together with a heavy heart. She has to leave town but she doesn't want to leave him. Seeing things from his perspective he obviously still loves her and always will but he knows it weighs on her heavy that she can't be with him. For that reason, he would never ask her to stay. He understands it would just add to the weight she's carrying. The chorus "Its never too late to come back to my side, the stars in your eyes shined brighter in Tupelo, and if you're ever tired of being known for who you know, you know you'll always know me" always makes me cry because he's saying it in a light, airy way like 'hey don't worry, you go do your thing and I'll always be here, don't worry about me' so the situation doesn't hurt her more than it already does but to me that line is so heavy because he's being selfless in the way that he knows he can't ask her to stay, she can't ask him to wait but he's saying he'll wait anyways or no matter what is going on in his life like don't worry you can always come back to my side like SORRY THAT IS SO HEAVY AND MAKES ME CRY EVERYTIME and the fact that the production is so airy and light, like bonny said at the end she feels like she's being swept away in the wind at the end of the song, its like a gut punch because sorry that was so intentional for his side to be delivered so light so Dorothea doesn't have to carry a heavy heart when she thinks of him. I find this to be such a heavy song but the fact that its production is so airy just adds another layer to show how much he loves her and UGH its so perfect and gets me every time. I could write a ten page essay on how superior TTDS/dorothea are
