Taylor Swift’s Songwriting Process on ‘evermore’ | Apple Music

  • Apple Music’s Songwriter of the Year, Taylor Swift, has been one of music’s preeminent and most decorated songwriters for more than a decade. With her latest records, the surprise-releases ‘folklore’ and ‘evermore,’ she laid bare the magic behind, perhaps, her biggest strength. Ditching the big, radio-ready, chart-topping sparkle of her past releases for bare-bones indie-folk instrumentation, stripping her songs down to the very studs. Watch as she sits down with Zane Lowe for the 2020 Apple Music Awards: apple.co/-Awards20
The Apple Music Awards honor achievements in music across five distinct categories, and winners are chosen through a process that reflects both Apple Music’s editorial perspective and what listeners around the world are loving most. The winners for global Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, and Breakthrough Artist of the Year were hand-selected by Apple Music’s global editorial team of world-class experts and tastemakers, and the awards for Top Song of the Year and Top Album of the Year are based on streaming data that is reflective of what Apple Music subscribers have been listening to this year.

To be fair/honest I actually think he's a bit sycophantic myself (he can't honestly believe every pop artist he interviews has released the coolest album ever) THAT BEING SAID his style has a way of messaging and making artists feel comfortable enough to provide him with some in-depth insights in ways they might not in more confrontational interviews. In short, his job is really to make artists feel like they're taking to a friend/confident who truly appreciates their craft and talent as an artist. He's not going to prob, poke and prod in ways that are directly confrontational or stressfully challenging, but he'll lead you along the well-worn path until you're comfortable enough to get into the weeds when he gently tries to push you in that more uncomfortable direction. And if that's his job, no arguments from me, he does it well which is why his interviews are worth listening to. Let the other journos do that other work.

Maybe she knows how he feels, maybe she doesn’t, but she doesn’t share it publicly because she doesn’t want to speak for him or take away his voice in the matter. I think that’s so respectful and honestly a great display of honest love.

@@lullatstars @lullatstars WOW! THAT'S BRAND NEW INFORMATION 😒😒 Of course I know that! But Taylor wrote rep and lover in the beginning of her relationship with Joe, he probably wasn't aware of how much attention they would get from those albums. In this Zane Lowe interview Taylor said "there was a point where I got to as a writer who only wrote very diaristic songs that I felt it was unsustainable for my future moving forward. (...) On my bad days it would feel like I was loading a cannon of clickbait when that's not what I want for my life."
With that said, isn't it contradictory that now she's releasing the MOST PERSONAL ALBUM of her career?
I'm wondering if maybe the reason why she said that on the apple music interview was only because of her relationship with Joe!

Many have English as a second language.
Ms. Swift was lucky with her upbringing, she could spent her time cultivating her language. (And she did and I respect that. This is not a comment against Miss swift. I am happy for her.)

The folklore + evermore albums were the most surprising but best things to come out of the pandemic... folklore helped me leave an almost 10 year toxic relationship. And a week after i had left and was unpacking my new apartment with my daughter and we had evermore dropped on us.... that album helped me to gain the closure that i was right to leave. Looking back now... I couldn't imagine my life without those 2 albums. The comfort they brought during such a chaotic time.... the uncertainty of the pandemic and the uncertainty of leaving a toxic relationship and not knowing if I'd be ok on my own... those 2 albums were the most unexpected yet best comfort.

see how he called Joe her "significant other" because that's honestly so so so graceful way to address someone, than saying like "your man" or "your boyfriend". I'm sorry but THIS INTERVIEW is literally the best! I can watch hours of this. Taylor talks about songwriting on evermore. Apple Music (10 hours version) yeah I'd be down for that! I can listen to her talk about her music, her art, the process for hours and I won't get tired! I don't wanna know who she dated, how they broke up or why or whatever because if she wants to tell us, she can do that herself. But it's interviews like these that do 100% justice with Taylor as an artist and as a human being. You can't even say that because she was only talking about her music that it was "boring" at some point. Because it wasn't. Zane Lowe asked her questions that I, even after almost 2 years would want answers to. How she felt when she was writing this? When Taylor said "This was the first time I threw the checklist away," I FELT THAT. You always knew which songs served which purpose on her previous albums, but with folklore and evermore, they felt so FREE of that standard she had been following for years!

@@rosierhehsizara3567 I think she means ( like Taylor says in the interview ) a popstar when putting together an album imagines which songs are for the chart attention ,the songs meant to drive the album to n# 1 are usually not the most emotional songs ,they tend to have easy catch phrases ,that get lots of radio play ; Shake it off , we are never getting back together etc , a mainstream singer actively tries have some easy hits ,then you have the songs meant to be concert anthems , which when you play stadiums have that big singalong effect the way long live does . Then you have the deep more emotional songs which are meant to enrich an album but people usually only discover these songs when they take the time to listen to the whole album , the songs are not the type that climb on the charts easily but tend to be the more memorable ones.
With these last two albums there were no stadium bangers or easy chart climbers ,the entire album would be made up of those deeper more emotional songs that don't get easy chart attention but last way longer.

I decided to check Folklore and I LOVED it, so when Evermore came out I was so excited. I loved it too. I also got to love her album Reputation. It's so refreshing to have a mainstream artist with a genuine, pure passion for songwriting and storytelling rather than scandals and charts. I remember seeing her early videos on tv and I definitely have not expected her to become this huge and not lose an ounce of love for music along the way. I respect her and her journey.

I love the PASSION that she conveys when talking about artist owing their work and how she’s doing whatever she can to leave the industry WAY better than how she found it. If there’s someone that can archive it, it is Taylor, and I am not trying to be like (ohh my fave is superior or she’s the music industry) no, this is something I genuinely believe, she has the power, she knows the ways, and she’s as CLEVER as a business person/artist can be. Her experiences and knowledge have set her to be in the position to be able to make a BIG positive change. There’s also the factor that she’s going against so many powerful men that get their money from exploiting and taking advantage of young naive artist that do not want the industry to change whatsoever and that is going to be hard. I hope she can surround herself with people that have the same selfless interest and they could work with her and make history together.

I love the fact that Apple Music let this guy interview Taylor Swift because he clearly is a fan. He's not just going in for one question after another but he really gets into Taylor's psyche and gets to have a very deep and interesting conversation with her about her songs and life in general. It's obvious that Taylor also enjoyed the conversation which is really heartwarming especially after seeing video clips of Taylor being disrespected by interviewers before. I wish I could talk to someone in this level of depth and interest. I envy both of them in this conversation. 💖
I never thought I'd love Taylor Swift more than I already have but folklore and evermore brought me deeper into her psyche and her heart and I'm all for it. Been loving Taylor Swift since the release of Our Song. I've grown with her and I can see how she's aged so gracefully. 💖 The thing that I admire in Taylor Swift the most especially in these two albums is when she learned how to let go-let go of things she can't control, let go of expectations she can't meet, let go of hatred she's harboured, and her letting the future unfold without having to map it all out in advance as what she used to do. I think that is so liberating and I suspect that is where most of her new-found happiness comes from.

After I heard Evermore I knew I became a fan of her, and actually felt in love with her craft to the point I want her to drop more songs as soon as possible so I can heard them on repeat like I'm already doing with her two latest albums.
