You’re right. Don’t fill it with the car turned off. I filled the fluid every way possible (besides turning on the car) after changing my thermostat and it kept over heating when I filled it with the car off and turned it on to drive. I checked my purge line and my the purge hole on my thermostat was facing the top like it’s supposed to but it kept overheating after filling with new fluid. I decided to do exactly what you did by filling it up with it on and then shutting it off and it worked great! Thank you so much man!

It’s called purging or burping the system, there are air pockets you need to get out so you turn it on the eliminate the air pockets

Dexcool turns to a crusty gunk and builds up on the heater core radiantly and motor . Just fyi , I had a Pontiac that ran dexcool and it was fun flushing it and seeing all the chunks fly out

What kind of coolant should you use then ? Cause I herd that before

Okay, so that’s the technique, fill it up while it’s running. The turn off so my engine can suck up all of my coolant. Then turn it back on. I’ve been filling it while it’s cold; mostly b4 starting; I fill to “COLD FILL LINE”. So, that’s my problem. I just did it and sitting waiting for it to cool although didn’t run hot. My gauge went above 1/2 way mark.

Won't the coolant explode out of the Reservoir once you turn off the car?

If you let it run too long it will start to boil out. But if you turn it off before it does that, it will be fine.

Here's the procedure recommended by GM:
-Fill the surge tank to the FULL COLD level.
      -Install the surge tank cap.
-Idle the engine for 2 minutes and occasionally raise the throttle to 3,000-3,500 RPM.
-Turn off the engine and allow the engine to cool.
-Repeat (Until the coolant in on the FULL COLD level when the engine is cold)
