    California patch would have hooked you right up. Only fair I offer some of the expertise in my trade considering you have done the same. You can still use screws on a cali patch. I would have cut to the access panel and then threw in a backer near the box. Then cut a cali patch to the shape of the hole. Vancouver Carpenter has some good videos

      Apartments are always fun working around all the ghetto past repairs lol. Another point for the cal patch btw because you aren't worried about matching thickness

    Whenever i have to patch where the surfaces aren't level , i mix some 20, and I mix it tight (meaning not runny) and butter the studs/joists/framing area with the 20 and put the new drywall in place and screw it , but I screw it in slowly......until the surface of the new drywall is flush with the surface of the existing drywall and stop screwing , even if the head of the screw is above the surface . Then after the 20 is set hard , i sink the new screws to the proper level , because at that point, the 20 is so hard that the new drywall wont sink below the surface . It will stay flush with the existing drywall around the patch . And then I finish the joint as usual . This method is much better and faster than using a whole bunch of shims of different thicknesses to shim the surface all around the hole to be patched. If it's at the end of the day , and I have the benefit of overnight for things to set , I will use PL 200 instead of 20 , and by morning , the PL is so rock hard , it's even better than the 20. then i set the screws and tape as usual.

    Pro tip: if you use a heat gun instead of a fan, you cut your dry time in half! Good work bro!

    • @robertn2813
      @robertn2813 Před 3 lety

      Heat gun isn't good . It dries too fast and won't bond properly , it will crack later . Air movement is the best actually . I've been taping 37 years . Trust me , air movement and , on big jobs , a dehumidifier are best .

    • @cledusvandamme4513

      On small repairs when you need to get in and get out it works perfectly fine. I’ve done it 100s of times with no issues. I wouldn’t suggest it on a large job by any means. But for a quick patch, especially one you didn’t include in your bid, it’s perfectly acceptable.

    Next time just cut square on edges of hole add two pieces of strapping on edges screwed through drywall half on edge of hole cut new drywall that way patch is alot smaller
