  • This video covers removal and installation of the alternator on Toyota's 1.8L Corolla, Matrix, Yaris as well as the Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe. This is a good project for the home mechanic with some basic tools. On camera is a 2010 Toyota Corolla. This particular engine was used from 2009-2013.

    Thank you! Your video had the best filming. Your belt diagram was was a bonus just in case. My favorite was your paper marking the tension bolt. I never in a million years thought I’d attempt getting under the hood of a car. The only thing that set me back was I don’t recall mention of removing the wire harness retaining clip from the old alternator and attaching to the new one. I was on hold with my auto parts store for 20 minutes before they answered my quiestion. Lol. Out of all the videos I watched not one person mentioned this part. Maybe I missed the mention? Anyway, I needed to thank you for your video as I used it and saved $400.

    I just did this on my Matrix. The original alt lasted 250K miles and the rebuilt Autozone one 26K (lifetime warranty). The batt light came on (only at idle) and it had 12V, at the battery, never higher, wipers ran slow as well. This car has the spring loaded hydraulic tensioner. I tied the serpentine belt to the motor mount so I didn't have to re-thread it after. Just loosened the tensioner, pulled the belt off the alternator and tied it in place. The rest is pretty easy. I had to move the AC wire harness tab from the old to new alternator. The battery connector tabs didn't fit in the plastic piece on the new alternator so I turned the cable around and it fit fine.

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  Před 7 lety

      Usually when the alternator fails, a battery icon will light up on the dash. If possible have the alternator tested or check for charging voltage on the battery terminals. You should see just over 14V. If only 12V is present the alternator is not working. Make sure all connections in the circuit are tight. What you are seeing does seem to indicate a bad alternator or other charging circuit problem. I hope this helps and good luck!
