  • Let's take a look at the 2013 iMac, restore its OS, then review it! Is it still a decent computer in 2013?
    About a month ago a woman sold me a '2012' iMac without any further information on it. I picked it up, let it sit for over a month, then recently got around to restoring Mojave on it. The seller hadn't given me the password for it so I had to erase the HDD and re-install the OS. Once it was running it turned out to be a 2013.
    Watch more to find out if it runs well enough to be a decent machine in 2020!

    I am using a 21.5 mid 2011 iMac as my current desktop .. "I have newer MacBook for work" .. this iMac was bought new and is pristine. I have added a good quality external SSD as Boot Drive on a shelf mounted behind the stand, I just didn't want to disturb the original plug connections inside. I have fun installing slightly different OS versions and have found that Sierra seems to run the best on my machine. High Sierra also runs fine but Sierra just seems, well .. it just feels snappier for lack of a better term. Cheers, and have a wonderful new year.

    I am inclined to buy the 2013 imac like that of the video, I want to put in it an SSD and 16gb of ram. Do you think it's worth catching him? I was impressed with his performance in the video. Does it run Mojave and Mac the Catalina well?

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  Před 4 lety +4

      Hey dude! It can be done, but make sure you watch some how-to videos beforehand. The late-2012 to 2015 iMacs are a real pain to take apart, but not impossible. They are sealed with adhesive strips around the egde of the monitor, so you have to buy a replacement adhesive kit as you will be cutting into it to get the flat panel off. Once off, you can definitely upgrade to an SSD and I believe a max of 16gb of RAM. If you are comfortable doing the replacement yourself, it's worth doing. I run Mojave on my late 2013 macbook pro and it runs quite well, but the CPU is better. I have to assume it would run Mojave quite well with the RAM upgrades. I can't speak for Catalina as I am not a fan of it, but I say go for it!

      I bought a 2012 iMac, and put in a 1 TB SSD.
      It is the 21,5" though, so upgrading the RAM to 16 GB is next to impossible, unless you are not afraid of taking apart the internals.
      The SSD swap is easy though.
      I run Catalina on it and it runs fine.

    External SSD would make a huge difference to that machine, also, opencore legacy patcher and Monterey works pretty decent on that box. Finaly, dont ever buy a screen ( 300+, buy another "dead" dead mac same year/model ( 30-60 )and screen swap..
    A cheap SATA SSD( even a 128gb drive will do ) in a cheap USB3 enclosure and install MacOS on that, makes it a completely different machine as far as responsiveness goes for about $25 ( sabrent is a good brand for the enclosure and Samsung Evo SSD's are good in external enclosures too )
    Finaly, if you want to game on mac, install windows of some kind as a dual boot, your FPS will love you for it. I have a Late 2013 27 I dual boot windows 10 on and play old games on. A 9yo Mac and Good Old Games are a combination made in.. well... cupertino but thats not important right now :D.

      Agreed, but you know what? It's a great desktop regardless. I have since kept this thing as my at-home MacOS machine and it hasn't let me down, even without the SSD.
