Maximinus Thrax: The Barbarian Emperor of Rome

Nothing lasts forever. Today we remember the might of the Roman Empire but it could not go on endlessly. When exactly the decline began is something for historians to debate, but we can argue that the empire reached its peak in the 2nd century AD, during the reigns of the Five Good Emperors, and slowly went downhill afterward.
Then, that slow decline fell off a cliff 50 years later when the end of the Severan Dynasty brought about a long period of great instability and weakness known as the Crisis of the Third Century. And this upheaval was triggered by the violent and murderous reign of a giant of a man, a Thracian barbarian known as Maximinus Thrax.

👍🏿. As a black woman. From Washington DC. Please stay your voice is relaxing 😎. Also until I can at least understand more of what the other guy is saying. 😂😂.
I'm going to Stick with him if he stays. It's almost like he's from the deep south of wherever he's from. It's all about learning and adjusting tho. 😂😂. Where is he from????
I'm actually from California. :) Thank you for the kind words. Karl's awesome, though, and he's a really good human. I live in Virginia now, though, so maybe my wife's accent has been having an impact on me. People usually have a hard time placing my accent, though.
Just entered my seasonal Roman Empire phase, and I’ve been rewatching the entire glory of Rome playlist in the past couple of weeks. This was perfect.
Welcome, and thank you!
Why are you watching that trash, what makes you too good to watch Dovahhatty's unbiased history of Rome?
@@fuckaroobill idk
Finally, biographics is doing Roman emperors again!
It's been a while, hasn't it?
@@Biographics a video about singer/poet Mark Lanegan would be great!
Can you do one on caracalla one of the craziest emperor's In my opinion
@@risboturbide9396we just got emperor's back do we really need poets😑😑😑
@@calebroberts5422 yes, we do! 🍻🍻
I'm sorry, I can't stop laughing at the name "Pupienus." 😂
Lol. I'm about to fall out of my chair laughing at it. 😂😅😂😅... LMBO.
Cheers to Eric for being able to say "Pupienus" as many times as he did without busting out laughing.
Out takes and the magic of editing.
At least it wasn't...Bigus Dickus.
@@Biographics Now I have to explain to the CEO why I at my desk giggling like child... no complaints... I mean Pupienus.... if he doesn't find that funny too then it is time for me to get a new job :D
The emperor with supervillain-esque name
What about "Eric Malikyte"
Nowadays, we call supervillians "world leaders."
I'd be a terrible world leader... I can't even get books out on time. XD
Thanks for not wasting 1/3 of the video on an unscripted promo for AG1. That last emperor video was rough
That's what the fast forward button is for 😁
There wasn't one on this video though?
@@Biographics no, I didn’t see or hear anything
Where is Simon???
This emperors reign would make a great movie.
Suggestion: Justinian thr Great. The Emperor who dreamed to restore rome
Nah, Constantine is better!
Why not both?
@@Biographics EXACTALY! PLEASE! Also love Constantine ❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥
I want Aurelian, the "restorer of the world".
And Caracalla too
Maximinius Thrax sounds like an obscure Star Trek villian
True
4:30 that made me instantly like Radu’s writing style 😂
Pupienus, ranks right up there with Biggus Dickus and Incontinentia Buckets. (For my fellow Life of Brian fans.)
My favorite part of Life of Brian is the scene with the aliens that randomly abduct him. It's so out of nowhere, I love it.
I think he easily ranks above them considering A) He was real and that's his actual name B) he was an emperor and C) his REAL NAME is somehow still funnier than the invented comedic names... This is a true story, i was taking a roman history class a few years ago with the most deadpan humor less professor I've ever had, and even he couldn't avoid referring to him as 'the unfortunately named Pupienus'
Damn. I'm really loving Eric doing the videos. Nice cadence and smooth voice in the videos
Thracians are the epitome of true warriors ❤
**Spartacus Has Joined The Chat.**
One could argue Alexander the great and his father's military dominance of other Greeks is directly related to their relationships/influences from the Thracians..
Pupienus and Chrispinus... Wooo that's wild names there😂😂😂
My next Fallout character will be named Chrispanus. It's decided. Works on many levels.
@@Biographics 🤣🤣🤣
Awesome that you are still going wish you all well but can't do it without Simon all the best to your channel
Where's Simon at
They did a video a year ago about it.
How about a more in depth biography of Pupianus.
Lol. Poopy 💩 Anus.
I'm sure that would get a ton of views. Plus, I'd get to say Pupianus a bunch of times again.
😂😂😂
Anyone interested in more about Maximinus needs to read Harry Sidebottom’s “Throne of the Caesars” novels. It’s a great dramatization of a very obscure time in Roman history.
Great video of a very little known Roman Emperor outside of academia, but no doubt due to my low intellect can't help thinking of Monty Python's Life of Brian and "Biggus Dickus!!!" 🤣🤣
Maximus Thrax is one of history 's all time greatest names
For the next Roman Emperor video, I suggest 'Basil I: From Peasant to Roman Emperor' or continue covering the Year of the Six Emperors.
Thanks for the good information in this video ⚔️
Radu is awesome.
@@Biographics Personally I've always liked the Germanic Tribes over the Romans
Biographics dling Román Emperos again is awesome! Suggestion: Constantine the Great ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great suggestion!
@@Biographics Thanks guys
So are you the official new host? Good job 👏
Wow incredible video seriously was not expecting this however what ever happened to that Caracalla video Simon promised 😂
I'm not really sure? Simon's a busy guy, though. So it might have gotten lost in the shuffle. I can look intonit though.
@@Biographics I would love that , Caracalla is such an overlooked infamous emperor it’d be much appreciated , Cheers
I was excited for a new biographics till i saw it wasnt simon
This dude is way better than the last guy they had. It didn’t help that last emperor video was 20 minutes long and 6 minutes of that was wasted on an unscripted ad for a crappy energy drink
Well, part of that is my fault. When Karl and I talk, we can go for a while. We did a podcast on physical media on my Storyrant channel that went over an hour.
@@Biographics I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be rude with that! And that’s understandable, you’re used to doing things your way and everyone used to Simon has to adjust. Also I’m hellbent on preserving physical media so I’ll check out your podcast :)
When are you guys gonna do ottomans?
Thrax was some boy - he had amazing stories and was a great fella for a few beers
1:20 - Chapter 1 - Early years
5:30 - Chapter 2 - Rise to power
8:35 - Chapter 3 - The thracian becomes emperor
13:45 - Chapter 4 - Years of the 6 emperors
18:25 - Chapter 5 - And then there was one
22:25 - Conclusion
How do you create these time links for a post please? Thank you
You're easy to listen to; got a good recording voice;
Great vid!
Would love to see you do a episode on Marcus Claudius Marcellus the Sword of Rome, Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus, and Lucius Aemilius Paulus Macedonicus!
And one of the coolest names for a Roman Emperor!
8:10 This version makes no sense. Thrax was nearly killed by archers loyal to the true (deceased) emperor, Severus Alexander, precisely because the young Severus was very popular. Unlike Maximinius Thrax, who ended up assassinated. It's more plausible that Thrax had Severus Alexander murdered by centurions bribed by him, and then blamed the army for the plot to make it look to the Senate as if his hands were clean.

Haven't watched in a while, what happened to Smallwood?
He's pretty burnt out right now, so he's taking a much needed break to recharge his creative batteries.
Just don't ever let Karl Smallbrain back on to this channel, apart from being a total pillock, his skin is so pasty and sallow that he looks like he has done ten years in solitary confinement and clearly very seldom ventures outside.
@@Biographicstell the man to rest up but he's not to abandon us like Simon did we'll mutiny!
Karl has hinted that he really wants to do more writing.
@@Biographics Fine, but please tell him not to give up hosting, liking this new duo of Karl/Eric, they appeal to both sides of the pond.
I promise you, the Romans did pronounce their R's.
As long as you promise.

Finally-- don't need to strain to understand the dialog 🎉
I understand that to a degree, but I've never had a problem understanding Karl or Simon. I guess it comes from a lifetime growing up on British TV?
Hey eric! You're amazing! Keep the videos coming!
Seemed like all of the Crisis of The Third Century could have been avoided if they would have kept Severus Alexander alive.
He was actually a pretty good emperor with his mother's assistance.
Eric is amazing, I love seeing your videos
This guy was really out for blood. Quite an interesting character though. It adds to the variety of the Roman emperors or better said Caesars.
I guess you will not run out of characters to make biographic videos on for a long time: US Presidents, British Kings, French Kings, German princes, dukes and other monarchs before the unification took place, Indian monarchs, French Presidents, German politicians, Governors of each state off the US, remarkable US Senators and Representatives, remarkable British Members of Parliament, Russian czars, some Russian aristocrats, Russian politicians, remarkable painters, actors, directors, producers, musicians, writers, Chinese emperors and kings, Japanese emperors, generals from all the countries, journalists, explorers, archaeologists and many others.
I think y'all need to realize that simon probably has like 12 different channels and it was most likely interfering with the mans personal life. I have no issue with passing off some of the channels if it means all of the graphics crews get to take some time for themselves. Good video 👍
Great video, I love the new narrator!
Anybody would be an improvement on Karl Smallbrain, who, from the look of his sallow, pasty skin, very seldom goes outside.
What happened to Simon?
The original creator passed and his daughter couldn't agree with Simon on the shows direction so he left 😭😭
Why are you pronouncing Gordian as Godian? Do you not see the r in there?
Because that's what my pronunciation research yielded. That's apparently how it's supposed to be pronounced. I usually follow a guy called Julian Miquel for this stuff. He's a linguist and teaches this sort of stuff.
Any chance for a Lepidus video?
I cant be the only one who likes thrax because of mike duncans THOR(the histroy of Rome) podcast.
Thrax's wife Ann was no one to trifle with either...
Face area... Brilliant :D
4:49
“Wrestle” 😬
In some parts of the US, it's pronounced, "WRASTLE" ;)
Where’s Simon?!?
Man, now that is a wild thought. "Hey, you know what, we're deciding that you're Emperor now. Here's your purple robes, Emperor."
"Uhh... No?"
"Okay, well, how about if you don't, we'll hurt you and those you love."
"UHH...OKAY?"
What were the thracian like at that time?
Please do a video on Ishi: the last wild Indian great story. like if you want a video done on thus interesting tragic story.
Small Wood is the move now!
cosmic horror madman!
Wait what happened to Simmon?
Great presentation...except video looking up...appreciated..hard to watch
What was his greatest accomplishment?
The Roman Emperors! They're back!
Finally! :D
Just don't let Karl Smallbrain back again.
@@seandobson499 I like Karl. What's your problem with him?

Yay the good host!
elaGABalus, anyone?
Karl's pronunciation always cracked me up. He stressed the ball part, as one does.
BRING BACK SIMON!!!!
Did he forget to pronounce the “r”s in Gordian and Carthage?
i get scared and run away every time this isn't simon. lets give it a go
Where’s Simon?
Fire the british bloke and keep Eric around. He will lead Biographics to greatness!
Don't ever let Karl Smallbrain back again, who, from the look of his sallow, pasty skin, very seldom ever goes outside.
Bro, bro. How in the hell did you get through saying Poopy anus that many times without laughing? I couldn't even keep a straight face and I am a 41 year old nurse.
So. Many. Out. Takes.
@Biographics haha, yes of course! Still you are a professional without equal sir.
Waste of time with all the ads it takes forever to get through just 10mins this is ridiculous
Where did the Johnny Sinns looking dude go?
*Looks at the stature at 1:10 and 1:29
*Looks at it again after adjusting his glasses
I know they're just chips, but it looks like those are hearts in his eyes. Was Thrax a vtuber? Did he uwu?
Did Pupienus have a cuirass?
The First Crisis of the 3rd Century emperor
Pupienus was friends with Toiletius Paperus Wiperus.
I call Bologna on half his origin lol sounds like Herodotus wrote his biography.
Looks like this was the time in artistic history when emperors were depicted with giant foreheads
16.39: VITAL-ANUS. So I learned from this that Anus's are vital....
..... Where's Simon?
Maximinus Trax = Arnold Schwarzenegger as Roman Soldier
Was it so hard to check the correct pronunciation of the word "Thracian" beforehand?
What happened to Thomas
10,000 x better than Simon Whistler, THANK YOU.
No Simón?
simon ?
Lol. This was the 💩! 😂
Is this guy from Boston? He pronounces “Gordion” as “gahdian” lol
haha that maximinus was weird looking looks like a damn bird
Where is simon?
Rome technically survived way after Thrax!! Constantine The Great being the reason, the Eastern Roman empire and Constantinople was still Roman!! Wasn't until the fall of Constantinople by the Ottoman Empire when the Roman empire ended!!
If this dude is 8 ft. I wanna see his horse. Wtf is it a clidesdale?? Belgium draft horse??
That's what he would have to ride. Otherwise. He might break a horses back
I was getting annoyed at the mispronunciations, but Poopy Anus really brought it full circle. All the way around the rim.
Pupianus😂.
Goddian? I thought it was Gordian
Not according to my pronunciation research. Apparently the r is silent.
Oh yeah I was goin by the full Latin spelling, Marcus Antonius Gordianus Sempronianus etc. I just assumed the “r” was pronounced. Love the videos btw
I wonder when Maori people will get a video
