  • This episode of Historical Flash examines the strange case of a Greek pirate that was "taken prisoner" and supposedly forcefully given a full body tattoo "by one of the wild tribes of Asia." It comes from an 1871 issue of the British Medical Journal and is presented by your usual host, The Professor. We hope you enjoy this bite sized bit of tattoo history!
We'll be trying to find out more about this person just due to sheer curiosity. It should be noted that we don't necessarily condone the kind of language used in these Historical Flash pieces but feel it's necessary to present the material accurately. At some point we'll be doing a full video on the history of tattoos and body modification being associated with "primitive" or "wild" cultures and when that changed.
Watch out for more videos like this in the Historical Flash series!
(And, yes, a sentence was accidentally edited out of the recording. Oops! 😊)

The final line about Professor Hebra feels very Welcome to Night Vale, doesn't it? 😅

Thanks to the wonderful folks at ArchaeologyInk (instagram.com/archaeologyink) I've been informed the man's name is George Costentenus and, while he definitely was tattooed all over this body and the designs were almost certainly Burmese in origin, his accounts of how it happened were many and varied. A video on him at some point, I think! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_George_Costentenus

I wonder how odd and troubling that experience must have been esp if you don't know what tattoos are then to be covered in them! Better question though, how'd he leave?

I found out from the amazing archaeologyink IG account some more info on this. They said this is "a nice account of the origin story of Gorge Constentenus! He told several versions of his tale over the years, I believe. His tattoos do appear to be legitimate Burmese work - though the story surrounding the acquisition is suspect.... The origin myth of forcible tattooing shows up again & again in the first generation of sideshow/exhibited tattooed men & women. Pretty much all of them were collectors & voluntarily tattooed - but the truth didn't sell tickets!" instagram.com/p/B7Z4PVhBVyl/?igshid=6x2h84h8zplk

I'm wondering why and imagining a Hoichi the Earless situation. Some kind of all body talisman?

@@Inkademic yeah it's kind of elaborate for a punishment. far more than the fabled 1000 cuts. Maybe the prudish doctors didn't say the "fabulous things" also kind of resembled amateurish drawings of a man's twig and berries.
